I got bleary-eyed reading this one on a personal level. This strip coincides with the passing of my mother eleven years ago today – Sunday, August 25, 2013. :-(
I think it was said best by Dr. Leonard McCoy after the death of Mr. Spock: “He’s really not dead, as long as we remember him”- from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
I miss my mom. Glioblastoma murdered her a couple years ago (Cancer is not natural, no matter what the science tells me. I bitterly view it as a microscopic-murderer) and I mourn for her to this day. This strip? Yeah….let’s just say Pig is more of a healer than even he realizes. He’s not allowed to be called a failure anymore.
“In other words, emotions don’t have to make logical sense. The fox will grieve the prince because he has established an emotional bond with him that causes him to value his company. That bond is invisible but no less real for being invisible, and breaking it will cause the fox pain.”
Animation studio Pixar began its finest movie, UP, with a wordless twenty minute recap of an old man’s life. Like this strip, it brought tears to my eye.
Thank you Stephan. Thursday marked six months since my 13 year old daughter’s passing from a brain tumor. I have read your strip every day since then because it was in her daily comic feed, not mine. I’ve grown (or should that be “groan”?) to love your puns as much as she did. Thank you for this tribute today, to all of our loved ones who have transitioned out of this physical form but live on forever- in our hearts and in ways we can’t fully comprehend.
Because Pig is so often beaten down and depressed, he UNDERSTANDS. He’s travelled the dark roads of the soul himself and knows what helps and what doesn’t.
When the body moves on, the vacancy creates a great sense of loss, but love lives on and is eternal, and the connection to loved ones will always be there for us. I like to think it is a bond that can never truly be broken, and will one day, some how, renew itself.
I am heartened to see so many positive and numerous comments here. May the trolls someday know this kind of love,
IF that’s all there is, I might as well forget everybody I loved who has passed — it won’t make any difference to them, and I can go on without missing them. Yeah, doesn’t work that way, so it’s just sad. They’re just gone, and all that’s moved is where I file the memories of them as those fade away. I’m glad I don’t have to feel that’s how it is.
This hit hard. It’s been 3 years since I lost my husband of 43 years only 3 days after our anniversary. Then my 92 year old mother passed away in January. Still having a hard time with it all. You never forget, just keep going on, and living in the memories.
Perfect for me today…I lost a really special cat 2 years ago today…due to a callous vet screw up. I look at his pix most nights and keep my memories of him alive.
WOW! So perfect. I have ordered 4 copies of this panel to send to friends who are going through mourning. THANK YOU Stephan. You are completely forgiven for all the bad (and wonderfully funny) puns!
This was definitely not the usual strip we’ve come to expect and enjoy from Mr. Pastis. But somehow he KNEW that I definitively needed this right now. Thank you!
For the first time ever, I bought a copy of this strip and it’s already arrived. Maybe some day I’ll be able to look at without crying. Thank you, thank you, Stephan.
This came out just after my wife’s mother passed away. She wrote to Mr. Pastis to express how much these sentiments comforted her after losing not just a Mom, but her best friend.

Pig says, “So she’s not gone. She’s just moved.”
When my oldest sister died, I had an especially vivid dream in which she spoke to me.
She said, “I’m not gone. I’ve just stepped slightly to the side for a time.”
Never had a “visitation” like that before or since, but it still feels real these decades later.

I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,

When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft starshine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
