The fact that that particular shape of body is no longer in vogue for women does not make Rubens any less of an admirer of the female form.

Why does Arlo accompany Janis when she takes a bath? Is that common? I can’t imagine having my husband sit beside the tub while I was taking a bath.

Run, run like the wind, you are going down Arlo and all you can do is delay the inevitable.

I made the mistake of describing someone to my wife as Rubenesque. She didn’t know the term and said I’d ‘fill her in’. The conversation went way south after that….

My wife loves it when I say Rubenesque.

Arlo should be used to Janis searching for reasons to be upset. When you look for misery, you’ll find it and Janis is pretty good at that. This should not be something new for Arlo to experience.

How do you think the male model for “David” felt? I’m guessing small.

As the attractive young woman responded to the teens commenting on her slightly plus-size, “I may not be your ideal, but I am exactly your dad’s type”. I wish I could remember where I heard this because I always thought it was one of those perfect come backs.

Even in the U.S., fully figured men and women were the “ideal” in the late 1800s, it showed they were prosperous. Look at a picture of J.B. Pritzker, governor of Illinois for an example.

I loved Rubens work. That’s my kind of woman. Plenty of curves and lots to hold onto. Skinny noodles are not my thing.

What’s funny is when I think “women bathing” I think Cezanne or Renoir or Degas. Rubens would be pretty far down on the list.

Remember that Janis was an art major in college, and she sometimes posed nude for the class. She is more likely to pick up on the implications of Arlo’s mention of Rubens as the specific artist than most other women would be.

Rubens-esque is fine. Rubens-Sandwich-esque is perhaps a bit too far.

Why is Janice so darn concerned about her body image. She’s really gonna hate getting old.

I always said my life got much simpler when I learned the terms Rubenesque and eclectic.

From the couples I see around Rubenesque is still in style in reality, it’s just the stupid magazines and fashion industry that drives the ‘thin is in’ attitude. Due to a very fast, active metabolism I have trouble gaining weight. And am always amazed how much it is assumed that everyone wants to/should lose weight. Including a doctor that suggested a low fat, low carb diet for high(ish) cholesterol. I asked him how I was supposed to keep my weight up and he didn’t have an answer.

Pay attention to how your body feels, it will tell you what is a good weight for you. Love yourself just the way you are. If you don’t like how you feel find a way to change.

This strip continues to delight. No slapstick or tired sight gags, just continued sophisticated clever plot interactions between spouses. Thank you!

C’mon Janis, Rubens’ women are a sign of pure beauty.

Don’t know why it took me so long to remember but Arlo and Janis talked about her nude college modeling career. She was let go because she didn’t have a plump Rubenesque figure. The week of Nov. 23 to 27, 2020. Left this comment twice, above.
