If this story were written today, the rats would be his accomplices. He would release them in some unsuspecting town, and then lead them away, for a hefty price. Then it’s on to the next town to repeat the scam.

My first thought when I saw this comic was that it was some sort of allusion to “When the cat’s away, the mice will play”, or something about getting away from the “Rat Race”. Then I noticed the Piper’s hat and instrument.

She’s thinking, Oh Rats!
