Wow, looks alot like the boiler/break room from when I was janitor at the local Y. Honestly though it could have had a cave monster in it since it also had a system of dusty dirt tunnels down at the end. They went under the pool in a square for maintenance to check the pipeworks, but I never went in. Like Spud I didn’t have energy for making new friends and was scared it wasn’t a perfect square after all.
When I was a kid, one of our custodians hung himself from a pipe in the boiler room. Administrative staff found him during a school day. It was sad. He seemed like a nice guy. He had that Appalachian hill people look to him. A bit like Lincoln.
I was once a security guard at a hospital that was being slowly taken apart. They had people coming and going, first with things like furniture, then plumbers and electricians. As a guard, we had to make sure that all the people in there were authorized to be there…didn’t want somebody from the neighborhood coming in and helping themselves. Also as a guard, I got to see all the rooms in the old hospital, including the morgue. It was interesting to see “behind closed doors” of a place like that.
I always loved it when my elementary school would have “air raid drills” and we’d all get to leave class and go down into the school basement among all the pipes and stuff. To make it super exciting, once we were in place, sometimes they’d turn out the lights for a while.
Title Panel: Very similar scene as the first inset except without the boys. A slightly green gaseous cloud is emanating from the slightly open door. In the cloud is the title of the strip.
The facilities guy told me there are cockroaches the size of rats in the utilidors by the biochemistry building…I’m not inclined to make friends with them.
(The facilities guy works with all kinds of solvents and chemicals, so his grip on reality might be a bit tenuous…)

I once said I have enough friends. I regret that now.

I think Spud has eyebrows in panels one and two.

Is Spud once again eyebrowless?
tammyspeakslife Premium Member 3 months ago
Did Spud ever have eyebrows? Nice detail Mr. Henry

Gary? Spud’s imaginary creature that obsessively makes him sandwiches. At home, so minus the Bell Hop uniform.

Spud’s watched Nightmare on Elm Street one too many times. Even once is bad enough.

Two thoughts: 1. Why is Seagull banned from the Boiler Room. 2. Did “Evil Spud” take Sunday off just to re-appear in Monday’s strip?

That’s a brilliant drawing! It’s the exact gloom of an old school boiler room.

That is a messy, dirty boiler room. He is lucky I’m not his chief..
