I don’t buy the pre-made oat packets. I get the regular 42-ounce container of quick oats, put 3/4 of a cup of oats and 10 ounces of water in a glass dish, and microwave it for 5 minutes at 50% power. Add some brown sugar, and voilà, the perfect breakfast!
Lesson: Never let mom negotiate the compromise. Stop arguing, give mom the four-barreled BIG SAD PUPPY EYES treatment and ask “PLEASE, dear mother without whom we wouldn’t exist, can we get both?” It would be a poor family indeed in which the mother wouldn’t spring for ONE more box of cereal for kids who would stop fighting and be so sweet and polite.
This reminds me of the Beverly Cleary book MITCH AND AMY. They were squabbling over who got to take the cereal boxtop to send away for a prize (do they even do that anymore?) and their mother told them to stop arguing, “…or I shall serve hot oatmeal every morning, 356 days a year, and there won’t be any boxtops to send away.”
Grandmother always served oatmeal because that’s what she got in the “commodity” box – I remember having to leave the table, once, half-way through breakfast, and when I came back and picked up my spoon from the bowl – the whole thing came out – sort of an oatmeal “popsicle” – and, yes, I had to finish it…
Back in the 60’s our Base commissary had “day care” for parents who wished to do their shopping sans children. Until we were trusted to push the cart and not fuss, my brother & I spent many a shopping trip there. Doubt it would work now, mega-marts want kids pushing stuff into the carts. $$$$!

I eat it every morning — but there’s a way to make it NOT lumpy. Mine is delicious.

As the Rolling Stones song says: “You can’t always get what you want.”

Oats: “A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.” – Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary.
(Personally, I really like oatmeal.)

I hope it’s apple cinnamon or maple brown sugar oatmeal. Something with flavor.

I loved hot Oatmeal when I was a kid. We got it with a sprinkling of brown sugar and a dollop of butter right in the middle…

Cinnamon and chopped apples in the water, old fashioned oats, no milk, raw honey to finish.

Overnight oatmeal I enjoy, cooked- car not for the texture.

Sure is a lot healthier than that deadly sugar cereal. When fed Wheaties the lab rats died.
