I remember seeing instructions printed on the paper wrapper they put on the chop sticks from our local take-out place. That’s how 8 year old me learned to use them
My first grade teacher taught the class to use chopsticks when she did a unit on Japan. She had us practice by picking up strings of pop beads. (remember pop beads? I probably wouldn’t if we hadn’t used them in class for something that has stayed with me all my life.) I became quite adept at using chopsticks and have always owned at least one good pair ever since. A few years ago, I joined a mindful weight loss group and laughed when one of the suggestions was using chopsticks as a way of forcing oneself to not eat as fast. They don’t slow me down at all!
My first experience with chopsticks didn’t happen until I was stationed on Okinawa in the late 70’s. When I was able to pick up candied beans with round lacquered chopsticks I felt I finally had it figured out…. 8^)
My aunt lived in Japan when I was a baby, and taught us how to use chopsticks when I was in nursery school. I hadn’t been using western utensils long at that point! It’s stayed with me my whole life. Another vote for learning young!

The cereal part easy. The milk part not so much.

Used chopsticks to eat my salad for lunch just now. Find it easier than using a fork.

I taught a child how to eat peas with chopsticks. She still ate an entire meal in 5 minutes. Guess she was very hungry.

The kids don’t know how to eat with chopsticks. You don’t hold them with your fingers that close to your food.

Drinking milk with chopsticks is the hardest part… unless they are hollow.

A friend commented that you’ve mastered them when you can pluck a single grain of cooked rice from the bowl without thinking about it..
