I need some enlightenment here. In the first panel, she intones she was already coloring her hair (since she was unhappy with how it was growing out), no? Why would the cost of a new but different color be any different than the coloring she was already getting?
A close friend kept having her hair dyed, pretending it wasn’t going gray—in her 60s! She thought darker hair looked more professional. I’ve just let mine do whatever it wants, and I was equally successful in the same profession.
I suspect our different approaches come from our different types of hair. Hers is straight, so she’s always had to choose between letting it hang kind of lank or paying for elaborate cuts. Mine’s crazy-curly, so I’ve always just had a trim now and then and let it do as it pleased… including turning kind of gray now that I’m in my late 70s.
$180? What did she do go to Great Clips? My Lovely Bride typically doesn’t get out of such a service for less than 3 Benjamins. Arlo is spot on in his assessment!
It costs less to look natural. The expense is all the hair dyes, and highlights, and fancy cuts/styles, plus all the goop you have to use to keep it looking “fashionable”….I hate that word!
The further you push yourself to be something other than your true self, getting yourself back to being you is costly and time consuming. It takes massive effort, and you lose friends who can’t handle the real you. $180 is cheap, even if it doesn’t include a tip.
Years ago I heard women say they paid $80 to get their hair colored. I was shocked they would spend that much money on their hair. I guess that $80 is cheap today.
My wife has never dyed her hair. It’s a very beautiful salt and pepper theme that was said to her by three stewardesses while we were getting off a plane a couple of weeks back. They are right…
Natural is going grey as you age. There are a few don’t, but most of us do. We EARNED every grey hair, and am proud of them. Grey hair is hereditary, we get if from our children. Too bad it is a gift we can’t return.
wife did it the easy way; buzz cut her hair to short stubble and allowed it to grow out au naturelle, only when we realized the color resembled 3 day old city slush did she decide a blue rinse was best.
Having done the same a few years ago — I had about 70% natural gray/silver under my color — my stylist did a “blending minking” which involved 5 colors but it was WORTH it! I’m now 100% silver/gray and get more compliments than I ever did with my coloring!
This is roughly what it cost when I was still dying my hair which is why I stopped dying my hair… I wasn’t getting my roots bleached so I wasn’t paying for bleaching, too. That adds to the cost. A hair cut at a reasonable salon near me (Chicago) is, with tip, roughly $100 if I remember right – I haven’t had a haircut in about a year and a half and I really need to get back in. I’ve got a lot of split ends going on. Anyway, this is all to say that $180 to bring greying hair to a “natural” look isn’t a bad price. She went to a professional for a tricky service and walked out looking good. Remember that a car detailing generally costs $100 and up.

Lightening and toning dark hair while keeping it healthy is a huge process.
If the stylist got Janis to her natural gray in one visit, she’s ended the cost of monthly root touch-ups.

Covid brought out the natural hair color in lots of folks and obviously saved them a bunch of money along the way.

She looks older, not better. If I was going to let my hair go gray, I would do it naturally, not have it dyed all gray.

Extortion? Just the cost of living in the 21st century. Hair cuts for mostly bald men (me) are $15 to $20. So it goes…
