Time and again I wonder why I’m reading a strip about a character who have no goals, ambitions, skills or interests. Then I wonder why someone would want to spend their life writing and drawing about such an uninteresting character. I wonder of there id a Luann Anonymous chapter near me. I need to break this addiction.
I totally understand where Luann is coming from. Although I had some plans, extenuating circumstances prevented me from going to college . . . and I’m honestly glad about that. Almost everybody I know who’s around my age and went to college say it did absolutely nothing but waste their time and money. They studied in their chosen career field, got the diploma or degree or whatever they needed, and then they were never able to get work in their chosen field. One such person I know studied to be a veterinarian, and after she completed all her courses and everything, she couldn’t even get a job as a groomer in a pet store. Even myself, I knew what field I wanted to get into, but whereas these other professions require skill, my chosen field is more about talent, which I believe comes more naturally, whereas skill requires proper education; the way I see it, talent should be put to work, not sent back to school. But even so, I was never able to get into my chosen field either, though I can’t say I never tried, because I did. Like so many others, I’m now stuck in a crappy job that I hate and I feel miserable doing . . . but at least I’m not stuck with student debts or anything . . . I just have to keep my head above water while I live paycheck to paycheck.
Keep at it Luann. With the community college being so close, it would be a shame not to keep going. Take the requirements like you are going for a degree in liberal arts until you decide on a major.
I dunno. Seems to me that picking a major doesn’t educate or train anybody in how to do anything. It’s just a decision for what field to focus on going forward. Bern’s current problem might be that she thinks a psychological counselor does what she already does: tell people exactly how wrong they are about everything, and then boss them around to fit her idea of who they shold be..
Hated school, flunked college, joined the Navy, got out and went to work at a factory. Knew the factory wouldn’t last, went to night community college for programming. Got a 3.75GPA and when plant closed for good got a job as a programmer. I did well because it had become very important!!
For sanity sake, I imagine Bernice has tuned out Luanne’s continual questioning on certain subjects out! An actual strip that makes me feel a little sorry for Bernice. Just a smudge. :/
Bernice knows it’s a losing battle trying to be reasonable and logical with LuAnn due to her total lack of maturity. She’s like a ten year old girl living in a fantacy world.
That won’t help you, Luann, even if it made you feel better. /// I was something like that in college. I was interested in chemistry, but the math involved was something else. Fell back on what I had a knack for, English, but didn’t want to teach and didn’t know what else I’d do with it. Well, here I am decades later, nothing to show for it but a series of odd jobs, a decade of a low-level secretary sort of position, a little teaching here and there… oh well, praise God, I made it this far and I finally even got married and retired, rather on the poor end of the spectrum but I have my health, a home, and a country that I still wouldn’t trade for any other. Sorry, at my age rambling seems to come naturally.
LuAnn’s calling is being an elementary teacher, so why can’t she see it?And she is SO right about Bernice. She’s smart but can’t read people at all. (Think the puzzle episode.)
This must be the week for the Luann characters to be outspoken LOL!
Luann finally said hello to the elephant in the room! But what does she care if Bernice is ill-suited to be a psychologist? (Besides resenting her often unsolicited advice). Luann might give up a lifetime of watching Bernice being the worst person that field of medicine has ever seen
I’ve got bad news, or possibly good news for you Luann. No matter what you choose in college there is a good chance you will change your career two or three times during your working life. I started out as a Mining Engineer, then switched to Non-Profits, then to Retail. In retirement I live in a ghetto so I can finance my work with the homeless. Based on 70 yrs of experience what you “do” in life is less important than what you are “being” while you are in that particular part of your career. Say you are a politician, do you put your constituents first, are you honest, are you helpful to those in need, are you willing to say No to people in a kind way rather than say Yes and then blow them off?
Being a politician is just a way for you to show / learn / practice your true inner traits. Some will help the world heal and become better; others are in it just for their own glorification and enrichment, they only succeed by pushing others down. Both serve as examples of what is possible. The voters through their choice declare what kind of nation they are part of.
The last time Luann was in a class, she was happy and very confident. She may be having a moment of despair, but I think that speech was all a preamble before telling Bernice the big truth, she’s not suited to be a counselor. I think that when Luann wants to tell Bernice something serious, she first puts up a show where she recit her sufferings and doubts to her, then drops the bomb. It’s a pattern that she repeats with Bernice and I don’t think it’s limited to the Sunday pages.
I went into college wanting to teach. Initially I planned to teach Art but was told by my instructors that I had no talent and I also could not afford to buy all the supplies necessary for that major. So I switched to my other passion—-writing and became an English major with a concentration in Literature, Journalism and Creative Writing. I still planned to teach as I only could afford four years until I began to pay my way and live on my own. During this time I also worked a variety of jobs to help pay my way through college. That, along with grants, scholarships and student loans got me through. I knew going in an only had four years to make it happen. Teaching wasn’t my first love but it was a practical decision and I knew it was a way to survive and be independent. I enjoyed the years I spent teaching and have some fond memories of them. Since then, I’ve worn many hats——freelance writer/cartoonist (thumbing my nose at my art professors as I write this!!!), business owner, drag race car builder and archivist, and yet I even have taught a few art classes! So Luann is well positioned for an invigorating and dynamic life. But, it’s time she picked a lane!!!! That doesn’t mean she will do that and only that forever and ever. But she is old enough to realize she can’t wander around forever. I think today’s youth sometimes gets much too much time to find a direction. Having a narrow timeframe made me get in and out of college in four years and become a member of the working class. It’s an important step toward adulthood. I realize others may have a lot more time and resources but the story has always been Frank and Nancy can’t afford for her to keep taking random classes while she “discovers” her one single great passion. If she’s still floundering after all this time she needs to unburden her parents and go to work, perhaps hoping to return in the future when she knows herself better and has a career path that will help her earn a living.
Luann is correct here, both about herself as well as Bernice. But it’s a shame that this won’t lead to any action on her part (or on Bernice’s part.) Inspiration is meaningless when it’s not followed by action.
There is something to be said for just getting ANY degree (unless you are a tradesman). You have the freedom to apply to a multitude of jobs that say “degree required” but never specify what degree.
Luann is right regarding Bernice picking A new major. Bernice may be committed, but she doesn’t appear to be applying anything she has learned. Assuming she has learned something.
My oldest kid was an engineering major. After two years, he said to me “I knew engineering would be hard. I just didn’t know how many hard things I’d hate .”
I told him to check the catalogue, look for courses he’d like to take and talk to a guidance counselor. Say “I want to take these courses. What should I major in?” and he switched to economics.
Funnily enough, even if you set your sites on one major, by the time your don getting it, 9/10 your not gonna be working in that field. I went to college for one thing and I’d say most if not all of the people in the classes and major are either still there struggling through the classes or working at Walmart with massive debt. quite sad.
You do not actually forget all of it even though you may need some refreshing and straightening out. Add to it the fact that new discoveries are always kicking in, it’s good to have a background so you know what’s changed and why it’s important.
There’s also the possibility that a new, absolutely UNIQUE job opportunity will come up which actually needs all the various things you have learned.
(That’s what I keep hoping for….and hoping…and hoping…and -—)
I tell my kids that life will help you to decide. Start with a job, preferably one you don’t loathe before you even begin; that job will help you learn employability skills, but, more importantly, it will help you understand yourself and what you want out of life. When i graduated high school, a lot of young men went into the military specifically for that maturing process. Everybody expects to change jobs as they move through life; that’s normal. The job I ended up in, IT, didn’t even exist when I started college. I was 37 when I began that career. Don’t waste your time, though; finding your place in the world takes time and effort, and the journey, with all its bumps, can be as enjoyable as the destination.

It would be cool if she’d change colleges and go to Moony with the rest of the gang.
