Over the past 200 years more than 700 proposals have been introduced in Congress to reform or eliminate the Electoral College. There have been more proposals for Constitutional amendments on changing the Electoral College than on any other subject.

The problem is that the side that would be hurt the most by getting rid of the electoral college, is always able to maintain enough power to make sure it won’t go away.

It doesn’t matter anyway.. Democracy just left America last night. We will no longer be voting so it’s a moot point. So.. can someone please tell me what, exactly, the allure is about Trump? Is it that everyone who supports him is just as racist as he is, and Trump just speaks the quiet parts out loud for everyone else? I guess I didn’t realize there was so much mental illness here in the US.

The best thing for this country was for Harris to win the presidency and the Democrats to take the House and Senate. The second best thing happened.

Now the Repuglicans have to govern, something they are not interested in and never have been good at. Americans will now get a taste of their dystopian view of government with a reduced Social Security, gutted Medicare and Medicaid, growing income inequality, no unions and back alley abortions.

Teddy Roosevelt said American learn only from catastrophe, not experience. We will see if we are smart enough to learn even from that.

Apparently someone does not have the intellect to understand the compromises that led to the Electoral College. This is a republic, not a democracy. In the early days, if one was called a ‘democrat’, it was considered an insult.

For what it’s worth, a question might be, had the popular vote been followed in 2016, would any of this have happened? Other than COVID, of course, which didn’t care who was in the White House. Though the White House response to COVID would have been way different, too.

That the popular vote went to Trump makes me wonder: With so many people voting against their own best interests, have we lost our collective minds?

I know, I know. 63% of American voters allegedly want a national popular vote. Turns out over 95% of those happen to live on the east and messed coasts. Maybe the rest of the country want a say in who becomes President? Face it—the Framers, in distributing power in as many ways as possible, made tyranny nearly impossible.

The Electoral College is a necessity. Without it the same five states would elect EVERY president. They are the most populous and generally follow the same party. We would become a single party country.

Each state gets a number of electors equal to how many representatives and senators they have. The state legislature decides how electors are awarded; most states say whichever candidate wins the popular vote in the state gets all the electors. After the popular vote takes place in November, each state’s electors meet in that state’s capital and vote for president and vice-president.Whoever gets a majority of the electoral vote (currently, a majority is at least 270), becomes president.

    It’s not actually complicated.

We need to keep the Electoral College. It’s designed to keep the ten or twelve or so most populous states from running everything, while ignoring the other 40 or so other states. We should consider a change in the voting that allows for more political parties than just two. As it is now, third-party candidates draw mostly from one of the two major parties, giving the other party an advantage (Ross Perot/Republicans and Ralph Nader (Greens)/Democrats). If we had ranked voting, you could vote for the person you really wanted, Then, if that person wasn’t the winner, your vote would go to your second choice. Even if there were a number of candidates, they would eventually condense down to two, one of which would have the majority, and determine the Electoral College winner. CGP Grey has 2 good (and fun!) explanations of this (he calls our current method “first past the post”; ranked voting is called “Alternative Vote”) on YouTube: >
