Over the past 200 years more than 700 proposals have been introduced in Congress to reform or eliminate the Electoral College. There have been more proposals for Constitutional amendments on changing the Electoral College than on any other subject.
Dear America, we are a few countries who have scouted the future for you and found that it is bright and sunny. So it is time to leave the 18’th century and joins us here in the 21’st with ONE citizen – ONE vote. It works, just count them and find out who got the most.
The problem is that the side that would be hurt the most by getting rid of the electoral college, is always able to maintain enough power to make sure it won’t go away.
It doesn’t matter anyway.. Democracy just left America last night. We will no longer be voting so it’s a moot point. So.. can someone please tell me what, exactly, the allure is about Trump? Is it that everyone who supports him is just as racist as he is, and Trump just speaks the quiet parts out loud for everyone else? I guess I didn’t realize there was so much mental illness here in the US.
The best thing for this country was for Harris to win the presidency and the Democrats to take the House and Senate. The second best thing happened.
Now the Repuglicans have to govern, something they are not interested in and never have been good at. Americans will now get a taste of their dystopian view of government with a reduced Social Security, gutted Medicare and Medicaid, growing income inequality, no unions and back alley abortions.
Teddy Roosevelt said American learn only from catastrophe, not experience. We will see if we are smart enough to learn even from that.
So sorry, but I cannot find it in myself to be witty today. I fear we’re about to find out just how bad it can get. And, despite have control of everything, when it all goes wrong, they will still insist it’s the Democrats fault. Certainly not Trump’s fault, he’s perfect, just ask him s/.
Apparently someone does not have the intellect to understand the compromises that led to the Electoral College. This is a republic, not a democracy. In the early days, if one was called a ‘democrat’, it was considered an insult.
For what it’s worth, a question might be, had the popular vote been followed in 2016, would any of this have happened? Other than COVID, of course, which didn’t care who was in the White House. Though the White House response to COVID would have been way different, too.
That the popular vote went to Trump makes me wonder: With so many people voting against their own best interests, have we lost our collective minds?
I know, I know. 63% of American voters allegedly want a national popular vote. Turns out over 95% of those happen to live on the east and messed coasts. Maybe the rest of the country want a say in who becomes President? Face it—the Framers, in distributing power in as many ways as possible, made tyranny nearly impossible.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
It is perfectly clear. Each state gets an Electoral College Vote for each senator and representative in what ever state a person resides. If a candidate gets over 270 Electoral Votes they become President. Not hard!
will be very interesting to see all the good things that will be happening to the “i love the uneducated” who voted for him. got an idea they are going to be very unhappy. but they will still have their idol room full of bibles, hats, pins, watches, flags, wrapped jacked up chevy pickups, gold plated shoes and more. but still complaining they can’t afford to buy a loaf of bread.
Copium, the medication for TDS sufferers. Two different strips were drafted for today; One for the win of Kamunism, the other, the one published, for the win of America.
People only support getting rid of the electoral college when their guy loses, and try to pass it off as “smart”. A better idea might be not to run a doofus and gaslight us into thinking she’s competent.
well then what about Trump winning the popular vote in last night’s election results to go along with you know the Electoral College vote? Put that in your word salad…
The Electoral College is a necessity. Without it the same five states would elect EVERY president. They are the most populous and generally follow the same party. We would become a single party country.
Oh boy. Tried to past a comment about this looking like the start of a Jackson Polock painting. Turns out his surname is on the banned words list so it won’t let me post unless I misspell it..
Learn from the results and the exit polling, there is way more to the USA than woke or maga. 2 political parties still stuck in the mid to late 20th century are the biggest problem we have. 3 straight elections with poor choices at the top of the ticket, what did you expect??? Next !
If Kamala had won the Electoral vote and Donald Trump had won the Popular vote, what would Libs say to that? Moot point. Trump miraculously won both and the Silent Majority has spoken. God Bless America and He certainly has and The Count and millions of other True Americans Thank Him for that. God Bless America.
Each state gets a number of electors equal to how many representatives and senators they have. The state legislature decides how electors are awarded; most states say whichever candidate wins the popular vote in the state gets all the electors. After the popular vote takes place in November, each state’s electors meet in that state’s capital and vote for president and vice-president.Whoever gets a majority of the electoral vote (currently, a majority is at least 270), becomes president.
We need to keep the Electoral College. It’s designed to keep the ten or twelve or so most populous states from running everything, while ignoring the other 40 or so other states. We should consider a change in the voting that allows for more political parties than just two. As it is now, third-party candidates draw mostly from one of the two major parties, giving the other party an advantage (Ross Perot/Republicans and Ralph Nader (Greens)/Democrats). If we had ranked voting, you could vote for the person you really wanted, Then, if that person wasn’t the winner, your vote would go to your second choice. Even if there were a number of candidates, they would eventually condense down to two, one of which would have the majority, and determine the Electoral College winner. CGP Grey has 2 good (and fun!) explanations of this (he calls our current method “first past the post”; ranked voting is called “Alternative Vote”) on YouTube: >
I’ve just laboriously read everything above. Most of the commentators need to go back and read their high school civics books…if they even teach that any more.
