Alright, now this really is getting interesting! How has this conversation, or the subject of Mrs. Horner inspired Luann? And for what? Her creative writing? The way she approaches life? If only GnK would actually follow through on this and allow this arc to go somewhere.
Phil’s a foil (in the literary sense) thus far in this arc. It will take a lot more to convince me that he’ll be anything significant by the end of the strip. He IS (and would be) a kind of stepping stone for Lu back to Gun, however. THAT’s the real interesting part which could make him more than a mere foil.
In can already picture it: After a whirlwind romance with Luann, Phil goes off into the sunset. Whether it’s acceptance into med school across the country, running off with a hot RN, or some other plot device, he leaves Lu heartbroken. By then, Bets and Gun will have run their course, and two long-time associates will finally have their “When Harry Met Sally” ending.
Meanwhile, Bernice (who is becoming quite the Karen) looks to have a future that JD Vance famously described during the campaign. All that’s missing now is the cat…oh no…no…no…she’s gonna end up with Les for a bit. It doesn’t sound appealing, but what if it is?
Pfffftttt… Our Dearest Ann❤️Eiffel is a much better inspiration. Far more interesting (to say the least) than meh dweeb Waldo without the read and white striped sweater and knot cap. No wonder we ALL ❤️ Adorable Ann❤️Eiffel, boy howdy!
Maybe LuAnn just might be inspired to donate a kidney. Nah, her attention span is too short . She’ll forget about getting tested so the data can go into the donor pool.
Luann and Mrs. Horner are really the same, but Luann has such low self-esteem that she can’t see that she was also ready to donate her kidney. Luann seems to feel more and more the urge to help ill people, I think more and more that she will become a doctor or a nurse.
We as old folk need to keep on building bridges, even if we’ll never live to see them finished and cross them ourselves, for there is another generation coming along.
Maybe this will inspire her to actually do something instead of being proud of being a “Blank Slate”. She totally missed what Tiffany and Bets were trying to tell her. She should be a travel writer, writing is the only thing that seemed to stand out to her and the traveling will broaden her horizon, give her the life experiences she’s been craving and give her a readable storyline.
Luann has been touched by Mrs. Horner’s life and attitude already. I think she’s learned a lot from her she’ll take through life. I had such a person in my life, Mrs. Olson, like a grandmother to me (more than my own), she lived across the street, I was in her life until the day she died.
Now watch. There he is, wearing the gloves and cleaning etc. I predict there will be another “glove contact” before this is done and it’s grossing me out!
What do you want? Why it was only a mere 23 years ago, that 9/11 inspired Brad to become a firefighter, and look how far that story line has advanced in that short time.
First of all, for all those who exhibit Luann troll hate, as a vacuous, vapid, entitled, boring, just a waste of a character, I hope this set of panels slaps you right in the kissers. She is portrayed as a relatively normal young woman for her age, who has lots of facets, and a HUGE HEART is one of them. Second, and this is a huge leap, and I’m trying to be unsentimental, but Phil is the “one.” He is caring, good looking, her age range, and while he is a CNA, a very important profession (I’m a beneficiary of good ones) I’d bet money he is pursuing an RN or even clinical physiotherapy (which requires a doctorate in Illinois) or something like that. I’m fully ready for a final misdirection, but no I think the Evanses are finally pulling the trigger in this arc. Time will tell, but guys most of us are of advanced age. Don’t wait too long.
Can we please just skip ahead to Saint Horner laying in a coffin with x’s for eyes and everyone in the strip including the dog is sad? Just get it over with already.
I’m recalling an old “medical arc”—-Luann had her wisdom teeth pulled;came home dead on her feet with a mouthful of cotton—-and Brad making with the “funny jokes”.
Man, the Evanses are going hard on this tell-don’t-show campaign to convince us that Mrs. Horner is just the most wonderfulest person ever. I’m less than sold. A 94-year-old person with failing organs declining to accept a kidney from a healthy 19-year-old is heroic in the same way that going to the grocery store and not defecating on the produce is heroic. Could a doctor even ethically perform this operation? And while Mrs. Horner isn’t owed even the barest amount of praise for her empty “I would if I could” kidney offer, nothing changes the fact that this paragon of self-sacrifice could have donated a kidney in the previous nine decades of her life and clearly didn’t. If Mrs. Horner is a saint who totally would donate a kidney if she could, then why didn’t she when she could? Seriously, what is this gaslighting nonsense? It’s one thing for a train of thought to metaphorically derail, but Luann’s logical locomotive somehow manages to capsize and sink on the tracks.
By the way, remember yesterday when Luann was talking about becoming a living donor and giving her kidney to Mrs. Horner? And now she’s hearing about other tragically sympathetic people like single mothers, young children, and, um, engineers who also desperately need kidneys? Turns out when Luann’s offer might actually be taken up, suddenly Luann is just too awed by how unattainably inspiring Mrs. Horner is. Yep. Just too inspiring. Shouldn’t even try competing, really. Hey, let’s change the subject to anything else!
Becoming a living donor is a major step. Just putting that “D” on your driver’s license is more complex these days. Making sure everyone knows your expectations takes some paperwork.
Luann, you don’t need to BE Mrs. Horner. You just need to let yourself go and be yourself—-tap into your authentic self and don’t be afraid to take a chance and be yourself. Be kind, be brave, be the soaring spirit you are meant to be.
Is it odd that for a comic strip named “Luann”, the main character is the least interesting? Luann is still vacillating, unfocused, conventional and generally immature. Where is the emotion and drive found in Tiffany or Bets?

Good for Luann.
Now, is she going to give her car to the kidney foundation?
Hey, I’ve done that before.
It’s easy, and it’s for a good cause.

Can it be possible that Luann is finally growing up? And entering the REAL world?? This arc could be her epiphany!

Is this leading up to Luann donating a kidney to someone else on the waiting list? This would be a great plot device.

She’s willing to give a kidney to Mrs Horner. She should see about getting on a list of living donors to see if she matches anyone else.

Lots of people would donate a kidney in theory. Very few people would actually donate a kidney for real.
