I feel the same way about Steely Dan. They had a Steely Dan cover band at a race I was at, the only thing worse than Steely Dan is a mediocre Steely Dan cover. And the only thing worse than a mediocre Steely Dan cover is a really bad Steely Dan cover, like the one played by a “blues musician” (air quotes intentional) at a local restaurant. You could see the horror gradually dawning on people’s faces as they ate. You are here, trapped, and this chorus repeats itself for as long as this guy feels like keeping on.
There’s a retro amusement park in Pennsylvania, but her family would have to take I-80 to get there. Knoebels in Elysburg is a real throwback, from the 1940s bumper cars to the only Flying Turns ride in existence. It also has free admission and free parking! You can even bring your own food, even though their food is award-winning and affordable.
Back in the 90s I attempted a no-interstate vacation from Maryland to Key West. Kicked it off by crossing the Potomac by ferry. Was able to go mostly interstate-free except at one point I was funneled onto an interstate to cross a harbor. The ride home was nice too, last day driving through the Virginia mountains during peak leaf colors on Halloween.
I still get “Hey, Nineteen” stuck in my head when I open my bag of “Fine Colombian” coffee. I don’t think that’s what Steely Dan was referring to, though.
Wonder what a ‘retro’ vacation consists of. But seems the youngster enjoyed it so all good.
The Steely Dan thing that was decades ago and might still be out there somewhere. But the kind of music that has been available on my 16 and 20 year old car radios means the radios have had no use in most of those years. They just fill a slot in the dash. If they didn’t have cd players, the buttons would never get used.
I empathize with wanting to avoid certain music in the car. My hubby plays music from one artist all day long on long car rides. The fourth or fifth time I hear the same song during a day, I start wishing I had some earplugs.
I equate her distaste for this band with the feeling I get when a musician with a 70’s repertoire whose following is 50-60+ year old women screaming as if he were John Cougar Mellencamp, is playing at an Irish pub (>_<)
I live across a parking lot from a seniors home that has weekly outdoor concerts in their courtyard right outside my balcony. Without warning music from as far back as the 20’s and as recent as the 70’s would blast into my living room triggering me into an overwhelming state of rage which I usually managed by going for a walk but if it started when I just finished preparing my meal I lose it. (No I don’t do anything violent aside from slamming my door and turning up the TV). Recently I tried contacting them via messenger with wonderful results. Now I have advance warning and I can make plans to be elsewhere. Just knowing this makes the feelings of helplessness less overwhelming.

What’s Retro (especially musically) is relative. It often depends on what you’re used to hearing your relatives (in this case your parents) playing.

Steely Dan was fifty years ago. That’s like listening to Al Jolson in the seventies.

Steely Dan is my favorite, I guess if I had kids they would have got tired of it, but too bad

I feel like, on a scale of 1-10, all guys give Steely Dan a 10 and all women give them 4 at best.

But is Steely Dan retro enough? Theme parks and interstates go back fifteen or so years earlier.

I played Steely Dan, Steeleye Span, and Stealers Wheel. Would have called it the Steel Wheels tour, but someone else had already taken that name.
