Quill: "Pretend I'm Rosa. I say, "Gunther, let's roll down this hill!" What's the first thing you think?" Gunther: "Is this safe?" Quill: "No! You think, "Yes! How FUN!"" Gunther: "I do? 'Cuz I'd say that' about a 147 degree slope. Seems risky..." Quill: "How 'bout if you don't think at all?" Gunther: "Plus, I believe there's a rule about going on the grass" Gunther: "Are those rocks?"

G-man has a point… think of young Wesley Crusher… he got in a lot of trouble over a bunch of flowers in the grass… – Then again, Gunther must’ve overlooked the fact that there’s a hospital down there, at the bottom of the hill… so, it must be okay…. – I wonder if YouTube can come down to tape this….

A 147° slope would be nearly doubling back on itself. A 47° slope I could believe.

…At least his problem is consistent enough for Quill to identify it even if he does leave out half of what Rosa said to him.

I think, like Gussie Fink-Nottle and others before him, Gunther just needs a stiff drink to get up his courage. If nothing else, think of the comic possibilities.
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Perhaps they’re playing the home version of Double Dare… - Or maybe Quill is also trying to get rid of his competition… hee hee….

The greatest irony is that Les the bully was a far greater threat to him then the decline of the hill (which isn’t anywhere near steep enough to be 47%, let alone 147%, which means somebody didn’t do their math…
I’d like to know what he was thinking when he decided to take a backpack to the Bully. I suspect in analyzing that thought process, he will pick up his courage from the Wizard from Oz here.

Oh heck, I wouldn’t want to roll down that hill.
What Gunther can do is spontaneously plan a fun trip somewhere with Rosa at moments notice to a museum.

So would a Rosa…

A 147 degree slope is 33 degrees from horizontal. Might as well just call it a 33 degree slope. 90 degrees is a vertical cliff.
drewpamon almost 11 years ago
But that’s not how hill grades are measured. 147 degrees would not only be a cliff but an overhang
TechTalkGuy almost 11 years ago
You wanna be bold Gunther?
Dumping Rosa would be the boldest move you can make happen!
cjswan232482 almost 11 years ago
I think Gunther should take up martial arts. Learning how to defend yourself will instill self confidence in every man. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would be great choice for Gunther. Quill should show some Royce Gracie tapes.

“Quite simple, y’all. Gunther is stating the angle of the surfaces that he sees. The part he sees comprises an obtuse 147 degree angle. The part he does not see comprises an acute 33 degree angle: "
Oh. So somebody did do their math?
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Quite simple, y’all….
Looks like Greg’s got another instance similar to what happened when Toni was working on the engine in TJ’s truck, and what he chose was right, but had people saying different sorts of things….

“Yep, and the Dittos and the Angel Flights still fit. Just not height – wise. I was 5’ 4” when I bought them, now at about 5’ 11", they are ‘highwaters’…"
Hey, highwaters or capris are in for men too now. That trend started in Europe several years ago and is catching on here too, at least for workout pants. (I’m not sure how it would look with bell bottoms though, lol!)
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Gregunther’ is correct. Just a matter of perspective ^Yes, I know…just like what happened that last time with the truck… – I always say: “Perspective, Perception, Point of View”…

147 degree slope?!?! thats not a slope, that’s a cliff. there is no hope for gunther, the boy is way too analytic for rosa. rosa wants a bad boy who is spontaneous , is wiling to take some chances. Not have every moment planned out.
Editman almost 11 years ago
The cliffs at UBC (overlooking Wreck beach) are 40 degrees (140). There are steps, but one slip and your dead, At my age (49) I wouldn’t walk down (let alone roll down!).
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
33 degrees it is; just a matter of perspective! The real problem is Gunther’s incredible unwillingness to do anything even the least bit out out of his normal, safe, everyday routine.Sometimes, Gunther, you’ve got to take a chance!
Barbara McKibben almost 11 years ago
There is a difference between following rules and being safe and taking NO chances at all…Gunth is a total loss. He will be a very lonely man. Life is all about taking chances. Poor boy, at his age I do not think he will change. He better go home to mama.

Has it occurred to anyone that Gunther is probably gay? Look at the facts:
1. He is a pubescent boy about to go to college.2. He has been with Rosa for a year and has yet to make a move.3. Rosa is hot.4. His hobby is making dresses.5. The gay community is not represented in this comic.
This time next year Gunther will be coming out of the closet.

Gunther You DOLT!

And AFTER Q-Ball Landed at the bottom of the Hill in a BROKEN Heap Against the Rocks, You Could Have SHIPPED His Broken Carcass OFF to Oz Once and for ALL and YOU Would’ve Had Luann All to YOURSELF YOU IDJIT!!!!

Looks like Gunther has a long road to rehabilitation. I hope Rosa (or whomever it may be) is patient enough, for his sake.
Anyway, I’m back in “Study” mode for my next credential exam. Y’all enjoy next week’s arc, I’ll be back towards the end of the month. I may pop in if it’s something Earth-shattering.

Rosa would roll down the hill, even though it’s dangerous and in violation of the posted regulations. Drop her like a hot potato, Gunther. This pairing was never meant to be.
Willow Mt Lyon almost 11 years ago
The memories of rolling down the hill with my sister are such good memories of my preschool days and into my school years. I lived in the country, and there was a girl whose mother would let her only go to my house to play because the house about 500 feet further was too far for her to go. She was afraid to roll down hills or slide down the old water pipe that had about a 45 degree slope, and the whole thing was about a foot from the ground, matching the slope of the hill, . She was also afraid to jump off our porch or the second or third step. She “bravely” jumped from the first step saying, “Wheee!” She was the girl the kids at school called “Cootie”, and it was all because her mother treated her like a baby. In high school she finally had enough with her mother and went to live in a foster home where she was very happy and was allowed some independency. Gunth’s mother treats him like a baby. It is up to him to “man up”, but it will be slow. He doesn’t yet know what is wrong.
genorino almost 11 years ago
Yea, stereotypical is the best word..but the G-man has shown lots of moxie when he’s had to react without thinking about it. Rosa has to endure these traits with great humor or get out of the relationship. Time for both to fish or cut bait.

Instead of Gunther being miserable with Rosa, he should be looking for a lady like himself. Rosa is obviously not suited for him.
ewalnut almost 11 years ago
I don’t know how steep that hill actually is, but I don’t see how going down a steep hill would impress Rosa. If it was actually dangerous and he hurt himself, she’d think he was a moron.

JayBluE almost 11 years ago
If it was just the area of hill ending at the five steps, then yes…. but …..it could also be a bit more than that…. Gunther mentioning rocks somewhere at the bottom could be just a couple of small hand held ones, or could be a bit bigger….. this is a case of Perception/Perspective/Point of View… each of our individual P/P/Ps will amount to us interpreting it in different ways… – But it does all lead to the main point of of chipping away at what is underneath the surface of Gunther’s reasoning, psyche, etc. Maybe today’s strip is just a quick one-stop just to establish this, and we all are just adding the rest, based on our own P/P/Ps….maybe tomorrow, another aspect of what’s motivating Gunther will be featured tomorrow… question is, will it be for the point of new insight, a featured new change, or just for a jog down Pathos lane?….
jjff almost 11 years ago
Quill saying how about not thinking at all is not always a good idea, people can have fun but they also need to think.
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
You’re right….unfortunately, it could be just so…. – But some people break those chains either knowingly later on, waaay past when we expect, or accidentally…. and sometimes with a life altering situation…. not always drastic, but enough that that single thing motivates somebody… in the real world this happens a bit more fluidly, but the question is, is Greg going to keep him suspended in this, for as long as the strip exists?….
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
I actually knew someone like this in school…. buttoned up, not very “out of the box” in social serttings, etc.. but later on in adulthood, they look and act very different from back then… it just was a matter of time, and certain things in life that stimulated the change… from the look, to the confidence… just the right change to stimulate a person, and just a matter of time…

Gunth, you are standing on the grass. You had better get off of it before you get arrested. Gunth and Rosa at age six: Rosa: “Let’s jump off the porch.” Gunth: “No, it is too dangerous. Let’s jump off the bottom step like this. ’Wheee!” Rosa, Frustrated: “I jumped off the second step when I was two. You are a baby.” Rosa to Gunth at age seventeen: “Let’s ride The Screamer”. Gunth: “No, it is too dangerous. The seat might fall off.”

JayBluE almost 11 years ago
It could be that the thing that he finds to change was the thing that he wasn’t looking for in the first place… in other words, the change he is looking for was underneath him the whole time…. when you look for something, you never find it because you focus too hard…. like the wallet that was really in that place you just knew it couldn’t be… along with that “snake that could’ve bit you”….

@Cameron Hall “What a wuss. His mother should be sentenced to life for murder…she killed his manhood.”
_"This may be strictly out from left field, but…
What if Mrs. Berger were to encourage Gunther to just “go for it”? Would that be the type of “twist” Greg might come up with to get Gunther to “man up”?""_"
I don’t think it’s right to blame Gunther’s mom for his personality. I have two children whose personalities are complete opposites. If the type of mothering determines personality, wouldn’t they have similar personalities?

“My opinion starts after “…she killed his manhood.” ".But the thought that his mother killed his manhood is an opinion. The thought that his manhood is dead is an opinion..I predict with 20.20 hindsight that he will go down the hill in a most manly manner.
