and now Jonah is stretching the drink five more days! go get a cop friend who’s also a P.I. and see what that freeloader is up to! You owe that to your married life! and Toni looks the same! I thought she was going to the beauty salon. not that she needs any more beauty!
I, for one, don’t think that Brad and Toni should feel responsible for Shannon – this has gone on long enough and TJ is not a substitute parental figure. Under his tutelage, she may turnout somewhere in the vicinity of Arya from GoT (but not quite).
Of course it would happen that her father foists Shannon on Toni, and Brad now, with no concern for them, or her, only himself. So how is this going to work out?
Maybe it won’t be about Shannon but about Brad and Tonya’s predicament…they are in their work clothes, ready to head to their jobs. They will discuss their situation and Jonah.
You might not be such a fan of paté if you knew what they do to the goose that produces it.
I think you’re referring specifically to paté de foie gras, which is very popular in France, and is in limited availability in the US. I’m not sure I’ve ever eaten any.
Most of the paté in the US is from the livers of a variety of animals that have not been brutally force fed like those poor geese. Especially, there are various poultry and pork varieties. I’ve had both. Good Sunday night meal with crackers, brown mustard, cornichons, cheeses and fruit.
Then after 5 days, Jonah says it will be another 5 days and so and so on until we readers finally forget that Jonah was ever in the comic strip and Shannon’s name magically changes to DeGroot.
No! Someone needs to put their foot down and say either the brother man’s up and gets regular paid daycare for that brat or the mother ends up with custody… It’s all kinds of wroig what is happening to Shannon… Not to mention Toni & Brad’s marriage!
Originally I thought that Jonah could send some money to pay for a sitter. But I just realized that when Jonah is doing a play – he isn’t getting paid for waiting tables (and the play pays less – if anything at all). Time to text Jonah: “We have done enough! If you are not getting paid enough to help us get a part time sitter, come home and take care of your little girl!” So if Jonah has to come home and wait tables, he’ll tell Toni & Brad that he coulda been a star – but nobody was there for him. All this could end with a solo from a two inch violin.
I know that Shannon’s luggage is there, because they expected Jonah to be back, by now (before that text message just arrived), but it could almost seem as though Shannon’s stuff doubled , just by “fantastic spontaneousness”, as if her “overnight belongings somehow multiplied”, after getting that text of ’Jonah’s bad news’….
These two are going to have to make a decision, at this stage in their marriage their time is most important. We have a wonderful grand daughter and help our daughter and son in law for real emergencies, however we have a life and both work and have told them “no we cannot take off and watch her”. It isn’t that we don’t love her or them, it is that no we are not their 24/7 on call free babysitting. Jonah must have day care for her so he can do his waiter job, sounds like time for Shannon to go there so they can go to work. Jonah needs to come home which Toni needs to let him know immediately or make arrangements for Shannon’s care. Which will probably have Jonah throwing a bigger fit than Shannon, or he can make arrangements for child care where he is and pay for it.
So instead of an “adoption” arc, we get “abandonment”? Why does Team Evans think that Shannon should be a part of this family, one way or another? Has the Luann-goes-to-community-college thing worked out so poorly that they feel the need to add a little kid to the strip, to maintain interest? Is the idea to age Shannon to where Luann was when the strip started, and let her become Luann v2.0?
Time to kick the can down the street. Send Shannon to that daycare place where Luann and Tiffany work. Toni and Brad have to go to work, and the rest of us need a break.
Someone mentioned contacting the Child Protective Service. Think about this for a minute. If Shannon were YOUR OWN REAL blood-relative niece, would you want her shoveled into the public Foster Program? Really people! You DO realize that “adults” are not the only people who read this comic, don’t you? Kids, Tweens and Teens read it also…..sure, they might not be commenting here; but honestly, I don’t think they even know about this venue. Greg is working on a “comic” which can appeal to a broad range of ages, for many reasons. Give him a break!
People who keep suggesting Child Protective Services need to be aware of the fact that this is always a resource of last resort. They are generally overburdened, as are decent foster families, so kids are typically taken mostly from families where they are in physical danger (like being beaten, locked in closets, starved and attacked by pedophiles.) Foster families are often stretched to the breaking point and kids end up sleeping on the floor, or, sadly, being abused by other kids who have only known that kind of treatment themselves, so that is how they react to anyone new who needs attention from the foster parents. Another thing to remember is that public employees like firefighters have to be ‘above reproach’. If a child is taken from them even under circumstances like these, it raises questions in the minds of the so-called Human Resources professionals about whether the firefighters are fit for duty…
Husband and wife dressed alike. How cute, you don’t usually see that until they’re in their 80’s with matching sweat suits, on their way to shuffle board.
I am tired of Jonah and Shannon. They really drag the comic down. What happened to Shannon’s mom? I would hate to see Shannon becoming Toni & Brad’s permanent responsibility. I have to say I enjoy LuAnn a lot less whenever Shannon is involved.
I never NEVER comment on comics, cuz it seems lame to care enuff about something so trivial. but BASTA with the spoiled child—lock her in a room with a book and some water for a few hours for goodness sake! and then go to effin AlAnon with enabling the loser brother. JEEZ, could we get some laughs rather than psychodrama???
@"AIRMAN": I’m guessing by your comment about a husband and wife in uniform being ‘dressed alike’, and how cute that is since it doesn’t usually happen till shuffleboard stage, that you are either a card carrying member of the Taliban, believing that woman place be in home at stove, or you really think anyone over the age of, what, 40, is a waste of oxygen. Which is it? Or maybe both?
This is not the same Brad of last year who offered to take different shifts in order to let Shannon spend more time with them, if needed. This arc shows a Brad generally annoyed by her presence and wanting her gone. Now here’s my prediction…. Ha Ha..Toni will find herself unexpectedly pregnant…the "father training’ will be put to good use.
It is sad to know many of the commentators in here are so callous and black hearted about Shannon, demanding that she be taken by CPS as to leave Brad and Toni alone. CPS is the worst place to send a child to. She was born to a mother who didn’t want her and a father who was still exploring his career and very young. Was that her fault? No. She is an innocent in all this, and the readers in here are cruel about her. If Greg drew her to be a pretty and feminine child with a pleasant personality, more of you would root for the newlyweds to adopt her. I’ve come to the conclusion most of you are very shallow and one dimensional and do not have much empathy. That reflects upon us as a country – a country filled with people like you, people who think only pretty and pleasant people are deserving and the rest can go away and rot. Oh yea, I forgot, that is how Trump won the election. That really says a lot.
B&T are heading to actual work, unlike Jonah. Shannon’s packed and they are carrying her things in just expectation. THEN the bombshell hits. I knew it all too well. TJ will be called into action, possibly, unless he’s at the Fuse. Not much humor in today’s strip.
NO NO NO NO!!!!! NO MORE STINKING SHANNON!!! HATE THE BRAT. WE HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH FOR 2 WEEKS———MOVE IT ALONG OR A LOT OF READERS WILL BE MOVING ALONG! IF I WANNA WATCH A HORROR MOVIE, I’LL TURN ON THE TV!!!!!!!!
Today, we get to see how Jonah exhibits little regard for anyone (like usual). If he really had concerns, he would go well beyond a text saying something akin to “I got a gig, you have to keep her five more days.”
But, unfortunately, many of us do have relatives who are just as insensitive as this. I know they exist in my family. They are a pain in the posterior, that is a certain.
But, the reality is, Greg is able to use the Jonah/Shannon situation to help us more clearly see the potential future family dynamic that will occur between Brad and Toni.
Many of us already have commented on how “parenting” Brad seems to be in many situations over the last year or so with Shannon. So, whereas Frank has mostly been a “dopey Dad” sort of character in the comic (“Dopey Dad” as a comic construct is usually a Dad who is relatively clueless and often receives the brunt of many jokes.), it looks like Greg is shaping Brad up to be a very caring, involved, and responsible “Dad” character.
It is interesting, though, to also note how Toni’s role in the actual “parenting” of Shannon has thus far been portrayed as actually much less than Brad’s role. From the last year or so, it seems that Toni as a “parental figure” tends to be more retreating. She seems to be portrayed as less involved. I do not know if that is a purposeful representation by Greg, or if it just happens to have been portrayed that way to give Brad’s character time to “shine” and “develop” as a father, but it is interesting, none-the-less.
Greg could have "use(d) the Jonah/Shannon situation to help us more clearly see the potential future family dynamic that will occur between Brad and Toni by simply continuing to portray the “easy” version of the remaining three days of her visit . As is, he’s jumped to the HARD version of three adults with work schedules juggling child care.
(Maybe TJ could just re-work that dinner plan he had. http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2017/01/06)
Since Toni and Brad are not Shannon’s legal guardians, they can’t simply enroll her in the daycare where Luann works (but I wouldn’t rule out Team Evans ignoring real world rules again), although I DO see Luann stepping in to fill the voids in between the work schedules of the others.
To be honest folks, IMHO, Brad and Toni are only showing a mild displeasure at having Shannon dumped on them for not 4, for 9 days.
But as some observant Posters have stated, it looks like the New DeGroots are getting ready for work. So, Who looks after the “dear little tyke,” Now?
A) Do one or BOTH of the New DeGroots call in sick for the duration, leading to one or BOTH of the New DeGroots getting FIRED, and then later “thanking” Jonah by “tuning Him up” with a tire iron?
B) Do They “dump” the “kid” on other family members like Luann or Ma and Pa, which in the end, make THEM as Bad as Jonah?
C) Do They Leave the “kid” with Old Smiley, who is Now Conveniently, nowhere to be found?
D) Do Brad and Toni take the “kid” to work, thereby INFURIATING Their Fellow employees, and more importantly, the Fire Chief?
E) Do They text Jonah and pretend that They’ve dropped the “kid” off at Child Protective Services, and REFUSE to return His FRANTIC Texts/Calls until He comes back and re-claims His “kid?”
TJ will have Shannon for the next few days. On return, Toni and Brad will find TJ kicked back on the couch with cool drink while Shannon performs with her microphone and stand.
So much mesopidia here! I already defined that so if you keep only referring to Shannon as “brat” who is horrible, and must go, or be “disciplined” through various devices, or given up to Child Protective Services, or just seem to reflexively react negatively to absolute temerity of GE even having this child in the strip, let me point out that perhaps it the very issue she poses to Brad and Toni in their young marriage, which is the real point of this arc. This is a challenge that Toni has had to deal with ever since Jonah had a child apparently, and Brad, being in love passionately, and being a kind, caring man (got it from his class A parents) took up the challenge, which has become ratcheted up now that they are married. All this brat nonsense makes for good troll fun, but really is totally immaterial to the story. Sorry you all miss the point. Tch, Tch.
On the bright side, if they do adopt Shannon, she’s already past the diapers and needing to be fed and changed in the middle of the night, etc.. They will be a ready-made-family!
Why would Toni be getting a new haircut? Women go to hairstylists just to get a trim. Of course, Toni’s hair on her hard days must smell awfully smokey, it surely did during her wedding.
Isn’t it good that Jonah’s job is longer? He is making money to care for Shannon.
Brad would actually not be very good in the father role. Look at him, he’s already ready to give up. If these two adopt Shannon it would actually be very boring. Shannon loves her father so I don’t see why she would stand for that.
Shannon is a little demon who exploits Brad and Toni and TJ.
Toni, get over your lifelong Guilt Trip and grow a spine! Say NO to that free-loading louse of a brother and bring down the Law on his deficient and defective “parenting”! Do it for Shannon’s sake, as well as for the sake of your marriage to Brad!
Wow! A lot of comments. I couldn’t read them all. As many have probably already projected, Jonah is gone for a while. The gig will last longer than planned or it will lead to another one – big break and all that. Shannon needs to be theirs so they can provide her a complete and proper home. It’s not ideal for newlyweds but they can handle it. Maybe it will force them to get their own place or for TJ to get his own place. I like TJ but I know he’s not a favorite of a lot of people. I would like to get back to Tiffany and Gunther, and Bernice and Piro, and Luann and whoever… Can the stories bounce around a little more? A day or two here, a day or two there, etc.

Seismic two is the only one who seems to be making any sense.

Jonah, sometime in the future: “In accepting this Tony, I want to thank Brad, Toni, and TJ for babysitting my daughter for the past five years…”
