And she graduated from high school into Moony? Not that surprising, though. I taught community college and most kids did not know how to do a paper, less write proper grammar or give a relevant persuasion – they just wrote illogical papers. They even wrote, "Like, blah, blah. Right? So, blah, blah. OMG. They will graduate anybody these days.
As much as I enjoy Tiffany, I’m beginning to feel sorry for her. Judging from the prolonged siege that her misogynistic creator has been waging against her, she ought to be given a leave or vacation time like Rosa, or Crystal, or Delta. It’s getting scary. Every time Tiffany appears, Greg finds a new way to beat her down.
Okay, now I’m disappointed. I have been a loyal reader for sometime now. And I liked the direction Tiffany’s character was going. The depression arc. The discovering her father is dating the worst character in the strip. Even worse than her son, or Toni’s abusive ex, because they had least had some form of redemption. And coming through the episode, while not the most mature and well-being person, had shown definite signs of development. Even though ‘she’ is still in the picture. But then, they made this episode. Now I, like everyone else saw the " We have to make layoffs" scene coming. But did they have to give her that reaction? Right now, she’s back in highschool. As the vapid pageant girl who thinks she’s popular. But actually has everyone making fun of how stupid she is behind her back. A shocked “What!?”, or a “Should I break the bad news to LuAnn?” quip would have been funny. But this is a serious leap backwards.
For some insight into Karen’s and Greg’s thinking, see this interview from last November: https://starsandcelebs.com/2018/11/interview-greg-evans-creator-of-comic-strip-luann/
There’s a very simple solution. Tiffany can offer to work one quarter of the hours for twice the hourly rate. She will get a raise, and he’ll be in the same spot as he offered money wise. She’ll just have to do nothing twice as fast.
Seriously, Greg has screwed her over again. I sure hope he’s getting whatever sadistic thing he’s got going for her out of his system. I really am believing he’s drawing her in the image of someone who did him wrong or someone who jilted him at one time.
Tiffany, you’re wasting your time here, it’s time to move over to another strip where you’ll be appreciated.
I thought a raise demand would not go over well considering that she does minor clerical tasks for a day care. Not usually considered a high paying job. Tiffany needs to go somewhere where her talents can be put to use. She knows makeup and fashion so something in the cosmetics or boutique line maybe. Maybe she can contact her friend in Paris who runs that lingerie line.
We need other forces at play here. Why isn’t all the fake Soufflé lingerie starting to fail and the duped customers rising up to file complaints or find out where the seller is. Would be a much better way to expose Ann. Just saying.
Tiff’s dumb blonde behavior has been a source of humor but it’s getting old. Please, please, please let her use these current experiences to grow up. The fake lingerie episode showed how knowledgeable she is about clothing and style. She could easily make money helping other students with clothing and makeup and grow that into a business. She could join the drama department and get experience in stage makeup and costumes. She could do a lot of things and still be funny, but she’s too old to be so dumb.
With the inane response Greg has given Tiffany in the last panel…. her character has gone completely into the “Jumping the Shark” realm.
It has been a truly frustrating and unfunny turn of events here these last two weeks for me as a reader. At this point, if this is to be Tiffany’s new behavior (regression to being more of an airhead than she was at 15)…. I would rather have her character volcano-ized like that one character, or sent to gather sticks with Rosa.
So much for growth and maturity. Tiffany seems more clueless than ever these days. Ann may be inadvertently helping her to grow as a person even though her real objective is to steal all Tiffany and her dad’s money.
Hopefully, what G & K are doing is setting TIff up such that she has to make some hard choices… kowtow to Ann (via her father), or reject them both and go truly ‘on her own…" and risk not finishing her college education. I vote she does the latter. It will be hard, but the rewards will be much greater. This is a true toxic relationship she’s having with her father. She needs to break free from it. She needs to become her own person. Hopefully, people like Gunther can help her, but we’ll see. But make the move, Tiff. Go for it!
There is NO humor in the Tiffany arc; or hilarity as luann1212 puts it. Tiffany’s cluelessness could be humorous in a way but G&K aren’t pulling it off at all. The reason it doesn’t work is that the Tiffany character isn’t innocently clueless. She has often been depicted ad conniving and mean-hearted. I thought she was being transformed in the early Gunther field trip episodes but is never came to be.
By innocent, tragedy prone humorous characters, consider “I Love Lucy” or “My Friend Irma.”
Of course I scan other comments on this arc, as I keep saying I should not,but then I am not always awake at the time this blog becomes available in CST, but given that I just want to say that being totally despairing of how the arc is going, and wanting to stop reading the strip because of how it is going is overreaction. First of all, Greg and Karen are masters at misdirection. You never can be very sure where they are going to take their characters next, and that is really true with Tiffany. This panel is just part of a long-term, long-lasting comedic, quasi-dramatic story of her life and transition into independent adulthood. it will take a long time, and will come about in hilarity ensuing kinds of ways, but in the long run she will be okay, and will learn a lot about life. So don’t give up on Tiffany, laugh at the situations she gets herself into, she is a drawing after all. But Tiff is a major character in Luannverse, so I counsel, go with the flow.
160 comments as of 9:12 MST. I guess that’s a typical day. Good shot at 200 comments before the day is out; possible shot at 300 (but not looking good).
Surprise one: Her efforts having been declared as “minimal,” she is kept at reduced hours, rather than given the sack (as many, myself included, may have predicted).
Surprise two: (Earlier this week) – her going to Bernice when, not-so-long-ago, she refused to receive any of her female friends – Bernice, Dez, or Luann. At that time, the only one that would do was Gunther – whom she has dumped once again in favor of criminal Les.
Some of this is predictable; someone pointed out above, and I like to point out not infrequently, that Tiffany once was the strip’s only villain, and to some extent, this is simply Karma.
In many respects we are seeing the destruction of Tiffany. Her strengths in the past have been her looks and her family wealth and now both have been removed by the author. She doesn’t have a work ethic or academic excellence to fall back on, so unless the author is moving in the direction where she develops either of those things, then we are headed into a situation where either she has to be rescued by someone who does OR Tiffany learns to play her father by ways that don’t involve whining about how awful Ann Eiffel is.
I know the popular opinion is " Tiffany so stupid Ha Ha!" but frankly, I think Papa Tom should be right next to her for all of this. He gave her a credit card at 10 years old and taught her nothing about money. If Tiffany gets an F in Life Skills, her dad gets an F- in Parenting. It’s like giving your kid a million dollar loan to start his first company.
There must be a Gunther-Tiffany hookup in the offing. Only these two star-crossed “losers” could find solace in one another; as was demonstrated in the now dim past.
Possible Miracle – Gunther & Tiff decide to postpone college and go into the fashion design business. Tiff designs them and Gunther makes them. And yes they become an item. Talk about two people that need a break…
What we have here is a failure to communicate. He is wishy-washy (like that round-headed kid). Tiffany is plucky, and single-minded (take that how you will)….
