One of the purposes of high school reunions is to help you to be glad that you did not pursue THAT relationship. It may have worked out for some, but for the majority…
.
Oh, yeah – Pru, don’t forget to take those nails out of the wall and spackle the holes. No fair using toothpaste.
I just read through the entire strip history this past year and now didn’t remember Stuart. The married lifeguard she fell for from the strips in summer of 2000. And yet just yesteryear to Luann in her universe!
I just had a far-fetched idea. Aaron Hill returns, asks Luann to come back to Hawaii with him, strip then shifts to being about Brad and Toni, alternating with Bernice/Tiffany/Gunther/Bets.
For a while there, Pittsville was the entertainment capitol of the world. People came from as far away as New York and Australia to study and perform there.
.
Will the last one to leave please turn off the stage lights and pull down the curtain?
Had several forever ladies or so I thought at the time, finally married the most incredibly beautiful one. For that I feel truly gifted and feel deeply sorrowful for those who were denied that chance.
LOL, Aaron Hill is still so hilariously the “Teen Girl Ideal”- wispy, longish hair, a nonthreatening smile, feminine features and half-closed eyes. They made him so generic that he never even really developed a personality!
Dear Prudence: Please don’t let the door hit you on the way out. You’ve been a silly, boring and essentially implausible character from the beginning. The fact that Evans & Evans conceived you as a lesbian, is good but hasn’t made you interesting except for “checking a box” on somebody’s diversity dashboard, and you could have been so much more.
Sweet to know that Pru and Jan have such a long and passionate love story♡. Luann looks so genuinely happy and joyful for Pru. I want to know more about them♡. But to be honest, in all my life I only know two couples who were together in high school and then married, and one of them has break up and rejoined after almost ten years after they casually meet again. Luann’s situation is the most common.
You never know if someone is your FOREVER until you’ve been with them forever. I’m so lucky I found mine. 40 plus years together and just seems like yesterday when we first met. Let the adventures continue forever!!!!!! He is my best friend and the love of my life.
44 years with the same woman. I was surprised she took me then and even more amazed she’s kept me around all these years. And, no, we didn’t meet in high school.
It was 45 years with my “forever” on March 22, although we dated a couple years before, and I am the luckiest dog (men are basically dogs, it’’s just true) in the world. I like to think the same of my wife, but I am glad she loves me so much anyway. -:). I had no idea when I met her, but that changed soon enough, we met in law school, and we immediately began to be with each other every day. Until we moved in together (few months before we got married, thinking we were fooling her parents, only to have my father-in-law tell me they knew all along exactly what we were doing) I had no idea. That is the way it probably will be, finally, with Luann. And Pru will help spur her to realize what really is someone she wants to be with and likewise. I am one of those who loves Luann as a character, and does not diminish her; I think that displays a fundamental misunderstanding of the whole world of and intent in Luannverse. This to me is a very hopeful and entertaining development.
Wanted to see where GnK were taking this arc, appears Pru is giving final advise on relationships to Luann; I’ll be curious to see if this results in Luann attempting a relationship again (it’s been a while since Quill left). I think it’s time and some positive motivation from Pru could cause us seeing another step into the relationship zone.
Btw, I have missed and will miss Pru for two reasons. First, she’s been a sound person for Luann to talk with. Her advise has been more mature without sounding like a parent. The second is because the script is made up of 20 year olds with the occasional 50 year olds stepping in. Pru’s filled in (at times) the middle ground that helps younger people step up to the next level a little easier. Since none of the regular cast work in a job (that we see) we don’t see them interacting and learning from people they’re more likely to respect than parental types; a person that’s a little older that they have more in common with.
I thought I found my “forever girl” several time when I was young, but they dumped me when they found out my parents were poor. My wife did not care. Her parents were well off and liked me for who I was. Money meant nothing. My wife and I have been together for 47 years now.
I thought I had my forever guy, but turns out he finally married the one that he should have married all those years ago, his beloved “cricket” that I always had to hear about.
Okay let’s break this down. Of the four guys Luann mentioned:
1) Aaron Hill was mostly indifferent to Luann, almost the entire time he was in the Strip.
2) Stuart the Lifeguard was, as others have stated, married.
3) Miguel was Very Romantically Aggressive. Too much for Luann’s taste. (“Folks” seem to have forgotten that)
4) Quill was everything Luann wanted in a guy. But ultimately, he too fell short.
What do these four have in common? They were all “pretty boys,” that Lu had crushes on. And in the end, they couldn’t cut it.
There were four other guy’s in Luann’s life not mentioned here today. One in particular who once cared for her very much. Probably not mentioned because “he” wasn’t quite considered “good enough in Lu’s eyes. And that’s fine.
But maybe it’s time Luann sits backs, re-evaluates, and takes a good hard look at what’s really important in her life, when once again, she pursues “romance.”
I think it’s simply a mind set. Some people do the “love/forever” relationship that somehow doesn’t last forever. It’s a style of justification. I love this person so the relationship is justified. Some people date and let the relationship develop and see where it goes. I just don’t trust people who have a lot of “forever” relationships.
Hmmm…mixed message in the last panel. Serial monogamy is the modern reality, but the more brief forevers a woman has, the lower her value in the sexual marketplace. Yes, women are the gatekeepers to sex, but men are the gatekeepers to marriage and community property. There is a MGTOW lesson here.
Again, she’s 19. She has her whole life ahead of her to settle down. And let’s not forget – the oddities of Luann’s relationships (and those of some of the other cast members) are down to the writing choices of the the cartoonists. I get the feeling that various characters were tried out, found wanting in some way by G&K (in that they didn’t think the idea of a long term pairing worked) and the romantic idea was abruptly dropped. That’s less the “fault” of Luann as perhaps the indecision – or change of mind – of the writers. Also, many writers are unsure of how to make a long term relationship interesting so they never let an initial romantic interest lead anywhere. I personally think that’s lazy writing (see how many script writers refer to Moonlighting as a template for why not to get people together) but it certainly does take a challenging, creative mindset to make a committed, long term relationship as interesting as the original courtship.
I had what I thought was a “Forever” young lady. It was an On and Off situation that, sadly, spanned three decades. When I finally woke up, it was painful. Nothing has hurt so much, since then; not even my recent peptic ulcer. :(
Missing here is Stuart. Although she probably wishes that episode never happened and has driven it from her mind. Probably not mentioned here because he was “older” than Luann, 5 years older. GnK were gonna milk that “kind of edgy” topic for about a year. July 2000 to June 2001.
At 16, she tumbled for Stuart the Lifeguard when he saved her life. Actuallt he saved Luann and Tiffany at the same time. She tumbled for him BIG time. “He’s The One” big time. Frank and Nancy even had “the talk” with her about age difference. It was the cause of friction and consternation at home for awhile. Nancy hasn’t been more upset since Brad proposed to Toni.
Miguel was introduced and even Aaron Hill was reintroduced at school during this time. Stuart overshadowed even them. The bubble burst when Stuart mentioned that he was married at what Luann had set up as a romantic dinner.
For those that missed it, it starts here: https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2000/07/03
Makes for an interesting “quarantine in place” read. :o)
Huh. I could be wrong, but I though Quill was the only one out of the bunch to return Luanns affections? I’m sure Luann means well, but I’d be a little annoyed/creeped if a guy from my high school whom I had no interest in was going around refering to me as his “forever” girl or high school sweetheart. It sounds more like Luann had a lot of unrequited crushes. Might want to work on that and find a guy whos actually into you, or accept that your high standards are going to keep you single and plan accordingly.
I’m willing to bet that, at some point in the not too distant future, there will be a strip with Frank and Nancy either watching the news on TV or reading the paper, and one of them will ask the other if they think that Pru is OK in all this.
Met my wife in high school. She graduated the year after I did, we got married the night before her graduation (no, our first kid wasn’t born for another four years). Next month we will be married 46 years!
