Actually, knowing how much money you need to make is essential. So is knowing how many hours you need to work at a job. The spreadsheet is more complex than necessary, but Bernice is working her skill set for her friend.

Awww… An headshot with smiling Puddles on Luann’s shoulder. So cute ♡. It’s nice to see Bernice seriously trying to help her friend, for once full of good intentions. But her ability with financial matters shows more and more that her choice to study psychology was a very weird mistake. She seem much more inclined to study economics. After that, If she still really wants to help people improve their lives, she could become a financial advisor for those in need of career advice.

This is definitely a hilarity ensues panel set today. Bernice shows her analytical side, which mitigates more on the quantitative side better suited for finance or business rather than psychology. Luann is being the humorous foil and the last panel is hilarious with Puddles posing as well. Interesting this a Wednesday strip. That means that a solution will come but a bit early to predict.

Luann must be under a lot of stress. She hasn’t changed out of the “kids 1st” top in days.

Devil’s Advocate, here: Personality quirks aside, Bern is showing Lu the salary she’ll need in her chosen field to maintain her lifestyle. No sense in taking a $7.50/hr job if you need $10.

I told you Bernice would join the conversation. Frankly, she’s better than Frank and Nancy at this point. I thought by now the parents would be making meaningful suggestions and working to a solution. Guess not!

In a telling interview, Greg once stated, “Tiffany and, sometimes, Luann” are “totally clueless and self-absorbed” character types. The two seem to be continuing that characterization and growing closer together in their presentation. I wonder if Luann’s Date-Pic account is still active?

I am wondering what a spreadsheet can do for the millions of unemployed people. Interesting.

I’m beginning to believe that Luann’s continuing to wear the Kids 1st logo t-shirt means that Greg will resolve this arc by recalling Luann to full employment there. If so, that would be a real cop out.

I hope we can take this story arc in another direction from the perspective of the parents who love Luann, whose kids are upset that she’s gone. Let THOSE parents weigh in with that knot-head director and bring Luann BACK by popular demand.(I speak as a parent & educator, married to a private school administrator who has, in fact, had to confront very similar situations). You gotta have your staff’s back!

I can see how what Bernice is doing seems a bit showy, but given Luann’s innate indecisiveness (which actually LANDED her in this predicament), having a way to balance salary needs given available hours will bound the problem for her.

i would try to go back and talk to the principal to see if i could work something out; like being on probation and taking a cut in pay but still working my regular hours and being at the same school teaching the kids. we all make mistakes; give her another chance!

Yes, a spreadsheet, brilliant. Or, maybe, look for a job, compare how much it pays to what the Kid1st job paid. See right away if it’s enough or not. The end.

Are they NEVER going to let Luann grow up, even a LITTLE?

That’s actually really good advice Bernice is offering. Luann needs to realize that her nice little job standing around with her hands in her pockets watching kids do whatever out on the playground isn’t going to pay her expenses anymore. Staying inside that monthly budget would help her a lot. But wait, she won’t understand the monthly budget. Oh Well. Bernice would be an excellent accountant, though. She seems to be very relaxed today.

This whole thing about Luann and her supposed gift for childcare/teaching (and those previous things she was supposedly so passionate about, like art) actually reminds me of a really good storyline from the show Freaks and Geeks. The character of Nick was upset because his dad was threatening to take away his drum set due to his lackluster grades, and so Nick was venting to his girlfriend’s dad Mr Weir (who was the main “adult role model” for the cast of teens.) Nick was saying that his true passion in life was drumming and his dad just didn’t understand that. Mr Weir then did some tough love and pointed out that if Nick cares about drumming, really cares, then he should be getting lessons and trying to be the best he can. But instead he was treating it more life a full-time hobby than a career path.

The point is, Luann has all these supposed passions, but she never seems to take them seriously enough to raise her level of expertise. She loves art but never advances beyond repeating Art 101 (and just scribbles together her assignments at the last minute). She loves theater but let minor disappointments turn her away from it completely. Loves childcare but couldn’t be bothered to even know the rules of the workplace or take college classes dedicated to it. So forgive me for doubting her commitment to anything she claims to really be into. If she cared she’d act like it.

Oh, and Nick was also just 16 years old, so he had more of an excuse than Luann for being wishy-washy about his supposed goals. Time for our girl to grow up a bit. But as usual Bernice is overcomplicating things (but she’s apparently Karen’s “Creator’s Pet”, so what do you expect?)

Maybe the school (from which Luann was let go) will be looking for a replacement for her slot. Luann might end up applying for it (she’s a perfect fit); if someone else does the interviewing, she could end up back on that same job.

Everybody’s got an annoying geek friend like Bernice and Big Nates friend, Francis.

Every time I think there is hope that Luann has a chance of becoming a more mature, altruistic, aware human being….we get a strip like this one. Even Cathy eventually grew up. At least Luann isn’t as annoying as Hillary Forth.
