Even famous artists got emotional when they did their works, Vale. Vincent van Gogh, for example, was crazy for this one girl that he cut off his ear to give to her. He even did a self-portrait of himself with he bandaged head where the ear was.
Sad day! RIP – Olivia Newton John I loved you in Grease and your amazing singing abilities were next to none. You forever have left a little Magic in all of our lives.
This looks like an hilarious opportunity for Luann to show he creative teaching chops. Getting a student to realize a hidden potential is a sign of a great teacher, which in spite of all the trollish shade about her, I think she is meant to be. Btw, so many think Luann is drawn off Karen Evans. I don’t know how true that might be, some, but Karen is a creative, as is her dad. Luann is a teacher, but down deep I think think she’s drawn to be a creative as well.
A DNA check was done on Vale and he has descended from royalty – the Duke in the Wizard of Id. See today’s WOI Classics: https://www.gocomics.com/wizard-of-id-classics/2022/08/09 .
While it is nice that Luann is getting some facetime in the strip named after her, these tutoring storied feature characters so repulsive, so lacking in any positive character that my first impulse is to slap them so hard that their mothers feels it! Whether Luann solves Vale’s writing blockage doesn’t matter because he deserves to fail; fail not just his class, but fail everything. This is a waste of Greg’s time to draw and our time to read,
The storyline may not be riveting but it shows Luann’s maturity in having a job where she helps other students that need help. It is more important than running a storage facility or being an influencer.
This is so good. Luann continues to be really calm, kind and supportive to the people she has to help and Vale is slowly starting to open up to her. She could become an amazing teacher, one of the really, really few actually loved and respected by the students♡. On the other hand, i totally hope helping doing an Art assignment will make her wanting to do something artistic again. Some draws or a maquette would be good.
May find out early about Vale’s background. He will un-Vale his emotions to Luann. Luann will become a counselor to Vale (never see Bernice when it comes time to counsel someone).
I would select Jackson Pollack who, from what I understand, would go on drunk binges for weeks before completing a painting. I could write seven days of drunken gibberish over lunch.
The last few story lines have dragged on and on and never materialize into anything. While I’ve been following Luann for years, I’m losing interest in the strip. Blue moon appearances by Brad and Toni, The Fuse, Mom & Dad…c’mon Greg!
In looking at this new character, I see bits of Tank McNamara, Bobby Kennedy and Lou Gordon. Even if that unlikely trilogy was the case, I still have no idea where his story line will end up. Speculate away, folks. It’s a mystery to me.
There’s three types of guys in this strip, Nerds like Gunther and Brad, scum like Shannon’s dad, Toni’s ex, TJ and Les, and No neck dumb jocks like this dude, Ox and the other guy Luann went to class with. Oh, and then there’s Aaron Hill!
I sort of called it yesterday. It’s an assignment that Luann would like to do herself. Hopefully she will teach Vale that you don’t have to be emotional to write a diary. You can put down anything you want ranging from a simple to-do list to deep thoughts. Luann will teach Vale how to imagine things, that he does have thoughts and that it’s OK to write them down. This is Luann’s calling about to unfold.
I think Luann will be able to help him. Art history is strongly in her wheelhouse and she is pretty emotional, too. This one should be a walk in the park for her.
GnK often use a character’s name to help express who they are inside. “Vale” or “Veil” is an interesting choice, especially for someone not in harmony or out of touch with their emotions.
Being that big there will be dozens of colleges offering him football scholarships even if he can only read on the 2nd grade level and his high school teachers will give him As to keep him eligible to play.
Honestly this may be one of the hardest to read weeks of luann.. not on an ann effiel or “you can’t move in with your girlfriend before you get married because this is suddenly 1920” level, those are still the crowners in my time reading this strip.. but because for some reason they choose to draw Vale as some prehistoric caveman who got unfrozen from the ice but it went wrong. He is GENINELY hard to look at. The idea of the arc isn’t TERRIBLE, Luann helps a macho man realize it’s okay to feel things while not new terriotires isn’t horrible like those arcs I mentioned. But does it have to be with Jay Leno’s deformed clone?
Too much of a risk. Teachers think these are “fun”, but I HATED these kind of assignments. No explicit standards & expectations on the content we were being graded/evaluated on ment that I would inevitably pick the teachers favorite artist and somehow trash there image of him, if I’m lucky and don’t have to defend the choices in my creative “diary” to the class as a whole, in which case the assignment is like ringing the personal attack dinner bell. 7 days in the life of Egon Shiel, but you don’t want me to talk about pedophilia? How about Picasso without making the diary into a pile of internalized misogyny? Vale is right to be wary, and Luann should take a tip on how to word assignments. In this case, ask for past successful examples, what the teacher is looking for in a “A” paper and how, if at all, will this poorly thought out assignment be graded.
This could be a real learning experience for Luann. Not everyone is “typical” – as in emotional. People with Asperger’s syndrome for example (think possibly Dr. Spock) are just way more analytical. Can Luann find a way to get into HIS world? That is what a gifted tutor would do, or where they would start, anyway.
10 years, never signed up or commented. Too much. at least 5 inconclusive story lines, not counting one-off Sundays…. what ever happened to run a story, complete a story, move on to another story….? Call me frustrated. Shulz never did it this way…..
Well, I was hoping for something different. If they weren’t so young, they might recall the old Cheech & Chong “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” bit. “Day 1. I … went … down … town … to … look … for … a … job.” "Day 2. I … went … " etc., etc., etc ……………………. !

I hope this goes somewhere… but have my doubts.

Dear diary: Today I stared at a blank canvas for an hour, started a self portrait, trashed it and went and got drunk.
Just say what you did, keep it factual, and save the money for the tutor.

Vale?
First, Listen to Steely Dan’s “Caves of Altamira” several times on Apple Music.
Then just grab a slab and write:
“Deer Diery,”
“Me like fire! Fire Gud! Me step into Sun! Sun Gud! Kid Charlemagne!”
You’ll get an “A” for compassion and creativity.
By the way.
Your mom’s first name wouldn’t be “Vicky” Would it? :-)

In order to be an artist, one has to have the soul of an artist—something that dumb jock totally lacks (at least as far as we know now).
Come to think of it—the same truth applies to Nil—which is why he needs a “muse” for inspiration.
