Oh Bernice. Why don’t you dance around a little in your muse outfit and tells us about your actual life? No Bernice. You are Evans’ puppet and you will never be anything but the snarky girl you are now.
Nope, life tends to involve another who is more than your best friend growing up for the most part. A lot more between their age and getting old and grey.
So sometime after college Bernice is looking forward to dumping Luann. I guess that makes Luann her starter BFF. I wonder who her Trophy BFF will be? Her imaginary boyfriend, maybe.
Something tells me that Bernice’s plans for the future will fail miserably. I hope Luann will be the one who won’t want to talk to her anymore. Or at least talk to her less.
We used to go out with friends and talk about the latest trips we took, plays/movies we had seen, etc.
Now we talk about who died, what doctors we are seeing and what procedures are lined up for next month. Getting old is not for the squeamish, that’s for sure lol!
My MIL has started to read the obits every morning, just in case….
See, it’s funny because Luann’s best friend (who wants to be a psychologist) keeps telling her in no uncertain terms that she’s pathetic and her friendship has no value. Ha ha?
This is how their friendship has evolved. They remind me of older married couples I see in the store, jibing each other with little quips and insults, it becomes a habit. Maybe Bernice not seeing her adult self sitting on Luann’s bedroom floor in the future is a good thing. Luann, on the other hand, has been deprived of a sincere, caring, supportive friendship in her life, and has no idea what that would look like.
Nice future she’s planned for herself where she has no time for friends whatsoever. Meanwhile, I spent last Saturday catching up with my high school friends, some of whom flew in from out of state. We played d&d for nostalgia, had a delicious meal, and talked about ultrasounds of grandkids, good vs bad neighbors, and the stresses of aging parents.
Between this and last week’s, I see why my late father told me not to lament that I lack lifelong friends. He and the friends of his youth grew apart over time. And perhaps not having such long term makes getting along with others as you get older easier.
No you don’t Bernice. You were born to observe and then translate those observations into snark. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with that, but that has been your life so far, you don’t show any signs of altering your life’s course.
Most of these comments miss the point IMHO, on Luann and Bernice. And where does Delta come in, all of a sudden? There is no hate here, Bern is naturally drawn to be acerbic, dismissive, and totally clueless although she has an unrealistic and exaggerated sense of her own importance. Luann is, in the mind of many here basically dim, silly, clueless, frustrated, and has terrible success with men, school, work, even her family. So why do so many of us read this strip for 30 years or more? Because they, as is the strip, are more than these personality traits. Their life progression, and their friendship is not unlike a lot of real people. Too close to home? What they are saying is so typical in terms of not just their relationship, but also the story. Remember Luannverse? Bern is doing what she always does, Luann is also. But in the scheme of things, in Luannverse and as an analog of real life, I think Luann is closest to truth.
Hey Bernice. All that stuff that Luann mentioned IS actual life. Especially gray hair and wrinkles. Not to mention such body breakdowns as arthritis, blood pressure, and internal organ functions. Don’t believe it? Just wait and see.
If Bernice wants a life she needs to go out and find it now, and not sit around in Luann’s bedroom killing time. Bernice once offered to pay Nancy room rent and while Nancy said it would be free it does raise the question where would Bernice find the money to pay Nancy? $400 seems pretty fair for a bedsit but if Bernice could afford to pay that then why couldn’t she pay for her dorm? And what became of Ben and his two adopted children? Hasn’t he found a job yet? Hasn’t he moved back to the Philippines?? And even if Bernice has a scholarship it would only cover the four years of undergraduate schooling. If she wants to become a psychologist she’s going to need at a minimum an MA and probably a PhD. Which will have to pay on her own dime. So why isn’t she working to put aside money for then? Also, who pays fir her car, car insurance, gas and oil. Luann at least works two part-time jobs to support her car. And why does “having a life” excluding finding time to talk to an old friend.
See, this is why I could never write Luann, because I think too logically. I would know that a "full-ride scholarship includes room and board so there would never be a need for Bernice to crash with Luann.
As for bringing back Delta, Greg needs to do it to prove that he’s not biased against black people. He replaced Delta with Dez then did very little with her. Then he added Bets and turned her into a vblogging monster. He says he couldn’t come up with storylines for her but most of her appearances during the first 30 years were just sassy lines and back and forth with Bernice. So he made her into a social justice warrior, which only made her obnoxious. Delta ended up only appeared to browbeat Luann into highway clean-up and so on, Greg could bring her back by having her cancer return and wanting to be treated by the same people as last time. While getting treatment she could take a class at Mooney where she tries to set up a Black Lives Matter chapter only to find that the university is mostly white. But while Delta had made a vow not to fall in love, she ends up doing with one of her recruits to the BLM chapter. There, A story that could be played out over a year.
So Luann is planning the long game, for after their kids have left and their husbands have fled or died, she plans to live with Bernice in some type of “Golden Girls” comic? Co-starring Tiff and Gunther, with Les as the loser ex(of Gunther)?
Bernice doesn’t seem to realize that “wherever you go, there you are” holds true when discussing “real life”. She already IS in the midst of her “real life” and hasn’t figured out how to recognize it yet. The more I see of Bernice, the more pathetic I consider her to be in relation to herself and her “friends”.

So Bernice is admitting that she doesn’t consider time spent chatting with Luann as having a life?
What more does Luann need to hear until she tells her to get lost??
Having a BFF is having a life. Bernice doesn’t deserve a friend like Luann!
