Head for the Mars Cheese Castle about ten minutes north of the WI/IL border, Pig. You’ll never need to leave.

I used to work with a Wisconsin guy who revolutionised how we did our accounting.A Green Bay Packers fan, he once wore a cheesehead to an office party, and he became known throughout the company as the Cheese Whiz.

We don’t just “have cheese,” we have deep fried cheese curds, cheddar-beer soup, and people who drink beer and wear cheese on their head to football games.

Having sent nine years in Wisconsin, I can vouch for the beer. Leinekugels (“Leinies” to the locals) is a favorite in the taverns in the northern half of the state. And the people also enjoy the Route 29 filet……. it’s a nice piece of venison.

I was just sitting here thinking about where to go on a trip this year in the fall. We’ve been everywhere except three states; Iowa, Ohio and Indiana. I have zero desire to go to any of those places but WI and MI in the fall were were really pretty.Maybe I’ll look into those again.

When I was in high school my family lived in Illinois about a 45 minute drive from the Wisconsin border. The drinking age for beer in WI was 18. Every high school kid knew that. Also, back then colored margarine was illegal in WI but fireworks were legal. Near the border on both sides there were signs advertising margarine and fireworks pointing you in the right direction to buy them.

Lots of cheese in Vermont, too. Might be closer. Cafilornia has its boosters, but you need to have a high level of tolerance for natural disasters. And weird politics.

To ge the whole Wisconsin experience, you need to: 1. Sample our craft beers on tap (yes, Spotted Cow is that good for a lager); 2. Enjoy our cheese, and 3. Experience an authenticl Sheboygan Brat Fry by ordering a double on a hardball with brown mustard, accompanied by a brat wash (known to non-Wisconsin folks as a draft beer). From a Badger who’s lived in the Land of Cheese for most of his life. (Outside of Wisconsin, there are people who think a Kraft Single is real cheese. Oy.)
