It used to be DJs and news anchors gave de facto names to things. Now the media stupidly provide free advertising to the naming companies.

They sell the naming rights, greed. Most Stadiums are owned by the local or state government.

“Crypto.com Arena”, home of the L.A. Lakers, Clippers and Kings is the worst. People still prefer to call it “Staples Center”, the office supply company that had naming rights for over 20 years.

My mom watched a 49ers game on TV from Levi Stadium and was disappointed that it wasn’t Candlestick. I thought with a little creative naming rights, we could have had Glade Candlestick Park.

Thank goodness for Lambeau Field. Since the team is owned by the community, the name will not be changed. However, the entrance gates are named things like Miller Lite Entrance, American Family Insurance Entrance, Kwik Trip Entrance and so on.

It doesn’t make sense to me. If the naming rights to the Mets stadium is worth that much to Citibank, why isn’t it worth that much to the Mets? Apparently, naming it is worth $400 million, and they could name it “Mets Stadium” for free. The Yankees, at least, recognize the branding value in naming it “Yankee Stadium.”

    >> net snip..

March 4, 1959 – Fifty years ago today on a busy news day for The Chronicle, readers learned the name of the city’s new $15 million baseball stadium for the Giants – Candlestick Park. The sports editors of San Francisco’s four daily newspapers at the time chose the name from more than 20,000 entries.

The winning entry took the name of the stadium’s site, Candlestick Point, which in turn was named because the rocks on the hill behind the stadium resembled candlesticks. The editors rejected proposals such as Argonaut Arena and Zephyr Cove, which would have been appropriate given the breezes that would long bedevil “The ’Stick.” The name changed four times between 1995 and 2008 – 3Com Park, 3Com Park at Candlestick Point, Monster Park and finally back to Candlestick Park.
