In 5th Grade, Mrs. Montfort insisted we all answer role call with a famous quote. She said hers was by Julius Caesar before he crossed the Rubicon: “The die is cast!” Next day, we all used the same quote. This is also when we learned that “die” was the singular of “dice.” I’m now 75, but still remember that from childhood.
We briefly review probability in my class, which involves calculating the odds of various coin flips and die rolls. I don’t worry about sloppy usage of die vs dice, but the one that caused some confusion (including me, the first time) was the textbook asking for the probability of rolling N aces with N dice.
I guess I didn’t spend enough time shooting craps in the alley, because that was the first time I’d heard a die with one dot up being called an “ace”. In board games, we called dice coming up ones “snake eyes” for obvious reasons.
Students don’t seem to spend much time playing with dice these days, other than the D&D nerds…
The maker of Fox Trot has merch for sale…2 years ago, I bought a 20 sided die with all 20’s on it. Gave it to my son for Christmas since he’s a D&D fan.

I mean given Rat’s personality, it wouldn’t be out of character for him to shout “DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE!” to Pig in a more literal sense.
BasilBruce about 1 month ago
Maybe Rat can get him one he can wear around his neck; a tie-die.

Pig should look for it under the seat of his car tonight. Maybe he’ll find two of them. Then he’d have a pair of dice by the dashboard light.

Rat isn’t telling you to die, Pig. He’s saying that the singular term for dice is die.
