Earl’s right. Those cold medicines don’t help you get over the cold any sooner. The best they can do is reduce your symptoms a bit until you finally get over it.
Some of the stuff that’s available to me makes me feel less awful for whole hours (two) at a time. Best cure for colds, imo, is to pee a lot. (Advice from my mother) and sleep as much as possible. For about 5 to 8 days. And take acetaminophen every 4 to 6 hours unless you’re asleep at that time… to keep the fever lower and thus reduce fever-symptoms.
If you take a few zinc tablets as soon as you feel a cold coming on it will not develop and you won’t need any cold remedies. Zinc stops the virus from replicating and allows your body to kill off the few that have infected you before there is enough to gang up and make your life miserable.
Kinda like Earl’s way – ride it out. Some will disappear in a few days, some longer. But adding OTC meds might cross over against the meds taken for more serious conditions faced by people his age – and mine.

Earl has a point. Not a good one however. Also like Opal’s bunny slippers.

all the medicine does is treat the symptoms. It doesn’t make one better.

This is true.

Reducing the symptoms is the point. You still have the cold, but don’t have as much aches, fever or runny nose.

A cold lasts two weeks without treatment, or 14 days with.

Nothing CURES a cold, it only masks the symptoms for a few hours at a time.

The Beverly Hillbillies had an episode like that. Granny had an elixir that cured the common cold – took a week to ten days.

Yup, but Nyquil will allow you to sleep right through it. It is said Benadryl is great too.
