n programming, that’s called a “greedy algorithm”. And it’s sometimes a good idea. But if what you THOUGHT you would eventually have to do turns out to not be something you ACTUALLY have to do, then you shouldn’t have done it in the first place: Wasted effort. And not doing it until needed is called a “lazy algorithm”.
My programming mentor always told me that the greedy man may get MORE beer, but the lazy man gets the LAST beer.
I think he was channeling J. R. R. Tolkien: "I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”—Bilbo Baggins

These days, the thing may be obsolete/unnecessary by the time it has to be done.

I totally understand. Do it now to get it out of the way, and you don’t have to stress over it.

I’m thinking it was the medication that derailed his train of thought.

I tried this with shovelling snow, but shovelling before it snowed didn’t mean I didn’t have to shovel after it snowed as well.

I’d put off taking that medication for as young as you can.

I suspect Earl’s memory may be going and his grandfather may have given him a sound piece of advice that Earl has since lost.

Sounds like it…

Earl’s grandpa had a point, but lacked the gift of being able to express his ideas clearly.

I think what his grandpa really said was “Never do today what you can put off ’til tomorrow.”

I took this advice on many occasions. Unfortunately, it proved to be overkill in several instances.

His favorite song must have been “Do, Do, Do” by George Gershwin.
.
“… I know, know, know
What a beau, beau, beau
Should do, baby
.
“So don’t, don’t, don’t
Say it won’t, won’t, won’t
Come true, baby”
