Transcript:
Mom: "....Years ago I couldn't survive without it. I needed it just to start my day. It was a trusted friends who served me well and helped me feel better about myself" Mom: "Now I hate it! I try to minimize my use of it because too much just brings me down. It's become my worst enemy" Luann: "Don't worry. You're still my friend" Mom: "Oh. Sure, rub it in"

Sometimes, we turn the “looking glass” into a “magnifying glass”…..we’re harder on ourselves than the rest of the world is…. – Sometimes, we man not even realize that what we think is “ugly” is actually not that way at all and are really the very thing that others admire… and what we magnify in the “nightmares” of our self-conscious mind, are really the “fabric of dreams” in another’s adoring eyes…..

It may be the only one who truly cares about Luann is there depicted.
…no, not her mom. ;)

“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the greatest inner beauty of all?”

This time, it seems that Luann is just the “middle man” in the “volleyball punch line” setup. Nancy’s “monologue” is to sum up how some feel as they age, then Luann’s role (this time) is just to set up why Nancy’s going through all of this…. with the result being (to use that [in]famous phrase in a bit of a twist: “Never trust a mirror under 30”…. – Also the whole aspect that Nancy thinks the mirror’s not her friend anymore, and has ‘moved on’ to someone younger.. someone like Luann… so in essence, “the mirror itself is pretty vain”…

Sometimes a mirror is just a mirror. What you see is what you bring to it, on many, many levels.

It’s fun to see Nancy acting her age! Although somewhat overlooked as a female character in favor of Luann’s age group, she is interesting. In fact, I’d enjoy seeing some flashback episodes of her when she was 17, sort of like what has been sometimes done with Pam (Crankshaft) Murdoch in another comic strip.

For today’s soundtrack, I’ll submit “Lies”, by the immortal Stan Rogers, and “I Just See You”, by Tracy Newman. If you haven’t heard either of these, a few minutes on YouTube will be well worth your time. Trust me.

I think that’s actually part of the joke. Other than the hair color and eyebrows, they really do look the same…at least in cartoon land. We all know that IRL, when you’re closer to 50 than 40, you start seeing stuff in the mirror that other people might not notice.

The thought just occurred to me that it would be fun to see what Tiffany’s mother is like, and what sort of dialogue they have.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?“Mother Nancy used to be, but now…I cannot tell; it is outside the DeGroot family now.”

It’s a pretty fine line between her and Sluggo as well.

I guess Mom agrees with Sylvia Plath’s poem
Mirror
I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions. What ever you see I swallow immediatelyJust as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.I am not cruel, only truthful—-The eye of a little god, four-cornered.Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so longI think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.Faces and darkness separate us over and over. Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,Searching my reaches for what she really is.Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.I see her back, and reflect it faithfully. She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.I am important to her. She comes and goes. Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness. In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old womanRises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

Reflections (of the Way Life Used to Be)…

I think Nancy is waaaayyyy over reacting. I realize it’s all “eye of the beholder” here but, to put it as “politically correctly” as I can….. Nancy “still got it.” :D :D :D

Stan Rogers and his great baritone voice were killed in a plane fire. I think the plane was on the ground, when a fire cause by an electrical malfunction killed Stan and a few dozen other passengers…

… Back to yesterday.*Ok, Lorraine, you have a talent for set design— a gift. But that alone won’t cut it. A talent, a gift, is only an opportunity. You need much more.1) Training. A raw talent has little practical use.2) Perseverance. I think on Michael Jordan (?). He was so talented. But in high school he said he would stand in one spot and shoot hoops until he made 25 in a row. 24? Back to “1”. You’ll need to persevere to perfect your talent, to make it into a skill.3) Opportunity. You’ll need to seek out good teachers. You’ll need to seek out opportunities to practice what you are taught.4) Self-sacrifice. Your friends will be hanging out at WW or having fun at a dance. But you’ll be backstage sweating in a children’s version of “3 Little Pigs”. Do it.5) Professional performance. After you are trained & experienced, the good gigs might not come your way. Seek them out. Don’t wait for them to come to you. If you can’t find any, make your own opportunities to show what you can do.*Oh, and as the popular media say, have fun.

Luann, if you look as good as your mother when you’re her age, you will be doing very well, indeed!

Nancy! You’re not That old LOL! Granted, Luann has the young, smooth face that a lot of old-timers do Not have. But, seeing an obviously older woman (not referring to Nancy) who dyes her hair a very dark color (black) in direct contrast to her beautiful older face, is worse than a few wrinkles here or there. JMO. ;)

Furthermore, we haven’t seen her actually design a set (or anything else, such as the furnishings and backgrounds). All we’ve seen is her moving things around (and raising and lowering them). Knowing where everything goes and arranging them that way is a pretty small aspect of set design.
