Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for November 04, 2015
Transcript:
Mom: Honey, what do you know about this girl, Prudence? Luann: Oh, let's see. She's incredibly talented, exciting and glamorous. Luann: She's from New York, Quill's favorite place. She shares his love of theater. They got along great last summer. Oh, and they text each other all the time. Mom: So I should be prepared for some serious weirdness. Luann: That would be prudent, yes.

Gee, Nancy, your daughter seems a little unhappy. Maybe you should be rethinking your plans to welcome the stranger? Nah. The show must go on, no matter who gets thrown under a bus…
peanuts511 about 9 years ago
I don’t like the sound of Prudence. Could she put a dent in their relationship?
Argythree about 9 years ago
Sometimes you don’t actually have to punched in the stomach to anticipate the pain…
Caldonia about 9 years ago
Quill has a love of theatre, actually.
Z Blair Premium Member about 9 years ago
Would be interesting if Prudence was a lesbian. Just sayin’
Z Blair Premium Member about 9 years ago
Luann has resigned herself to the worst possible outcome before anything has happened. Or Prudence could have a bf, be married, be much older, lots of possibilities there!
Airman about 9 years ago
Perhaps Prudence is all of those things, talented, exciting, and glamorous, but could she also be of a different race, making this story line a trip into social commentary and attitudes?
kenhense about 9 years ago
If Luann was a total good sport during the visit, would Quill notice and be impressed?

Klingons aren’t glamorous and they eat crawly things.. Now, Counsellor Troi was a different story.

I think Luann’s making the situation worse than it really is, and exaggerating/making up details about Prudence. Wait until you’ve met Pru before you say good-bye to Quill.
jillifitz about 9 years ago
Pru is probably a 50 year old glamour queen who has a “Motherly” relationship with Quinn, and thinks of him as a protege, certainly NOT a love interest.
blunebottle about 9 years ago
Funny, I don’t recall any particular time when Prudence was described as glamorous. All those other things, yes, but somebody correct me if I missed the glamour part.
TexanAtHeart about 9 years ago
Nancy’s body language says a lot. She has her legs crossed away from Luann. That and her words, say, Buck up daughter, because we’re “Going on with the Show” …cue Ethel Merman
TexanAtHeart about 9 years ago
This comic takes place in this decade, right? Why hasn’t anyone looked Prudence up on Facebook? or Googled her?
ironman01 about 9 years ago
Has Prudence appeared yet? If not, is it possible she is 50 and married? That would be perfect.
Ottodesu about 9 years ago
We should be running a poll on the appearance of Prudence.I bet she has buck teeth.

Nancy, You’d also better get ready for some SERIOUS Moaning and Whining from THIS kid, too…,
Chuck374 about 9 years ago
She is exciting and glamorous? I don’t remember Quill describing her that way.
Pointspread about 9 years ago
Nancy, the thing to do here is put Luann to work. I’m sure there is plenty to do.
dlkrueger33 about 9 years ago
Maybe Prudence will end up being the long, lost Delta, who now goes by a new name. Why do we not know what happened to Delta?
LoveyDove about 9 years ago
I am banking on Prudence ending up being in like her sixties or something. :P

Exactly,Lovey
imbaldeagle about 9 years ago
Sooo, Prudence sounds plain and chaste. Probably is something like Bernice, but more mature. She’s definitely a career gal with no time for romantic liaisons. Anyway, Nancy had about 19 boyfriends as I recall, so she’ll be able to guide Luann through her “serious weirdness”.
Airman about 9 years ago
I still think that Prudence will be the new Delta. (but I’ve never been right on anything Greg does, yet).
IhateWinter about 9 years ago
I agree from yesterdays comments. Prud is probably in her 40s and not that spectacular looking.
StoicLion1973 about 9 years ago
I’m glad to see Nancy is more supportive of her daughter’s relationship. She was considerably less so with Brad when it came to Toni. She (Nancy) got better….

I got the ‘Prudence is older’ vibe also
1soni Premium Member about 9 years ago
I’m going with Prudence prefers the company of other females.
Argy.Bargy2 about 9 years ago
-Prudence is 90 years old
I don’t think Quill would be calling a 90-year-old Prudence a ‘girl’…
Make Mine Marvel about 9 years ago
I line up with those who remember that Quill referred to Prudence as a “girl”. I don’t know if Australian usages are different than Californian, but this strongly suggests to me that Prudence isn’t much past twenty-five, thirty at the outside.
As for her being gay, I doubt it. It’s possible, but I don’t think Greg and Karen are quite ready to go the Lynn Johnston route. There has never been a gay character in Luann, and I don’t expect one to appear now.
The last time I raised this point, someone mentioned the differences in readership between For Better Or For Worse and Luann. This suggests that if even a few major newspapers decide to cancel Luann in horror at the thought of acknowledging 10% of the population, it could have a serious effect on the Evanses’ bottom line.
I think, though, that Quill is pretty decent, even noble. If he had romantic feelings for Prudence, or thought she did for him, I think he’d have leveled with Luann before now. The guy may be clueless, but I don’t see him as cruel. Remember, Quill grew up as a much younger brother of sisters.
billsarar about 9 years ago
Everyone expects Prudence to be a 75 year old Lesbian as did I at first. Now I’m expecting a young attractive hetro female…there’s no drama the other way.
Outsideplaying about 9 years ago
@Make Mine MarvelTotally agree with your points so I won’t repeat. I think Nancy is just trying to prepare herself, and understand Luann’s view, for whatever storm is ahead when Pru arrives. Luann’s view of Prudence is colored by her view of New York and theater people as all glam.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
7The “harsh” reality for Luann is that if Prudence causes [bland] Quill to stray…. then that IS the best thing that could happen for Luann. It is better for her to know now that Quill is not for her, rather than waste more time on this relationship. If Quill does not stray, then it is an indication that this may be a relationship that is worthwhile for Luann to continue. If Quill were to stray, and Luann were to try to “fight for her man” then it would be sadly pathetic for Luann. If he strays… let him go, and say good riddance. Luann needs a greater feeling of self worth in regards to relationships.
seismic-2 Premium Member about 9 years ago
For heaven’s sake, why all the speculation about what Prudence must be like? Shouldn’t Quill have told Luann all about Prudence by now, given that she knows that he and Pru are (at least) “besties”? Wouldn’t she have asked to see a picture of Prudence, and maybe asked whether she was single? If Quill and Pru are such good friends, shouldn’t she come up from time to time in the heart-to-heart conversations that Luann and Quill ought to have, if they are at all serious about each other? I get the strong feeling that Lu and Q just don’t communicate at all, that there’s no real mutual bond. Lu simply wants to have a boyfriend, and right now Quill is willing to be it, but he isn’t really committed to the idea. People who actually care about each other would have discussed his relationship with Prudence thoroughly by now, and there would be no point in all this “I wonder what she’s like!” suspense.
selbyq about 9 years ago
Prudence is going to end up being 65 or something and clearly more of a mentor than a threat.
kenvilkid about 9 years ago
The name Prudence sounds a little old school to me. My money is on that she is some older “Grande Dame of the theater seen” sort of woman. Quill’s proven many times he is with Luann only, No Worries Shelia.
brookeherren about 9 years ago
I feel like Prudence will show up and we’ll all be surprised to find that she is 50+ years old.
maverick1usa about 9 years ago
Luann has found out that Prudence is talanted from Quill’s comments & she is excited about theater, or theatre, as is Quill. But, she has never seen her or even a picture so how can she “know” she is glamorous? Have a great day!
Luanaphile about 9 years ago
Totally agree about strength of story. It would be interesting to see some growth in Luann in having to deal with a pretty and talented Prudence. In the theater business, I would think there will be many attractive and perhaps threatening women, and Luann must learn to adapt.
Hippodance about 9 years ago
Anyone else think that Prudence may end up being gay? It is an easy way to add diversity to the story line.
jkjezek about 9 years ago
I don’t recall Quill ever describing Prudence glamorous, exciting, etc. This is a typical teenager fearing the worst without having the facts to substantiate the fears. Not that they are groundless, just unfounded. If Luann were really secure in her relationship with Quill then Prudence would be a great discussion to discuss Luann’s fears and concerns. But, then – that would detract so much from the story line.
Endunamoo about 9 years ago
Ok. is Quill really this clueless. Even I.. oft referred to as brick wall by my wife, can see that this not a good thing for his relationship with Luann. So this begs the question. Just how serious is he for Luann? I think he is totally bone heading this thing. Not an Iota of consideration for her here.
Maybe Prudence really is that much of a non threat to him. But still, she’s coming from New York at his request,Just like that. I won’t go to Dallas at the drop of a hat to see my brother and I get along well with my brother.
Luanaphile about 9 years ago
Prudence will not be gay, because after that twist, where does the plot go? The Evans aren’t up to the complexity and skill that would be required to carry off such a story development.
Guilty Bystander about 9 years ago
Shows how much Luann trusts her boyfriend. For all anyone not named Greg or Karen Evans knows, “Prudence” could be a 75-year-old who looks like Doris Roberts having a bad hair day.
ampeck about 9 years ago
I am thinking Prudence is going to be someone older :)
dziner88 about 9 years ago
Since Mr. Evans is keeping Prudence a mystery, I am hoping she is a campy, 40+yo, NY drag queen. Now that would be a great addition to the Luann social circle. What a shift in the dynamics of their town THAT would be…!! You go girl!
seismic-2 Premium Member about 9 years ago
Instead of Prudence’s being a 90-year-old, ugly, married, lesbian, how about letting her be a gorgeous, young, single, brilliant, talented, knockout who has the hots for Quill? That would be some real drama, not just another typical cop-out that characterizes all recent story arcs (Bernice’s boss loves the impromptu drum circle, there’s nothing in the brownies, Piro leaves before breakfast, etc., etc.). Shouldn’t anything that happens in this strip actually matter, instead of turning out to be a big nothing with no consequences whatsoever?

@BRDSHTT – I finally got around to reading Christmas Tamales! and by golly dammit YOU are Prudence the playwright among us. Can I illustrate the promo posters for this guaranteed hit?
Lion_Tamer about 9 years ago
Pru is very beautiful and will cause much stress on Luann, until Luann finds out Pru is lesbian and starts hitting on her.
Lion_Tamer about 9 years ago
I don’t remember if we have had a lesbian girl in the strip yet?
doverdan about 9 years ago
@Caldonia said, Quill has a love of theatre, actually.-—————————————-Do you have two co-existing spellings for theater ???, .Not just US and UK spellings of the same word and concept?.Or are you implying that Quill will now head for London?.Or that, despite his affection for Noo-Yark, he still sees the idea from an Australiano-Pommy point of view?

Thes little mother-daughter moments are to be cherished. Too bad Luann is so depressed even before she has met the fabulous Prudence!

Luann is doing her best to keep Quint’s mind off Prudence and on HER. She’s got the female instincts all right, but doesn’t know what to do with’em.

I get the feeling that Prudence will either turn out to be a) drop dead gorgeous and super amazing, or b) ugly but still talented.
notbornyesterday about 9 years ago
well Luann’s relationship with Quill seems pretty pointless, so it might be prudent to start looking elsewhere
seismic-2 Premium Member about 9 years ago
Luann does a decent Dana Carvey (as Bush 43) imitation in the last panel, with her “That would be prudent” remark. Maybe now she can start practicing Carvey’s “How conveeeeeeeenient!” (as the church lady), since that would fit perfectly for all major “plot” developments in this strip in recent years.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
Haha! I would say your “Prushtt” phrase has been the best joke of the day! Very clever!!!!! :)
Rinzler about 9 years ago
I’m new to this comic strip so pardon my ignorance. Perhaps Prudence will be this strip’s first LBGT character and will be attracted to Luann. A new spin on the love triangle.
bscan48 about 9 years ago
We could also learn that Prudence is much older.
Make Mine Marvel about 9 years ago
@argy.bargy2: Yeah, I think you’re right. I’d forgotten about him. I do think, as many others have pointed out, that it’s a weird thing in Luann’s and Quill’s relationship that she seems to have so little idea of who Pru really is. Wouldn’t Quill have shown her a picture, or told her something about Pru’s career background, marital status, or something?
ericbrower about 9 years ago
I think a lot of people are missing the point. The issue isn’t whether Pudence is young and pretty. Or old and ugly. The issue is Quill’s seeming preoccupation with her. In fact, the latter maybe worse. How would you feel if the person you were in love with would rather talk about (and to) an old biddy than spend time with you?
William Taylor about 9 years ago
Bet Prudence turns out to be 58 years old or 360 pounds or something else totally out of the ballpark for Quill, romantically speaking. >>>> Luann worrying for nothing.

@PipeTobacco: Despite my handle, I’d like to suggest Elfquest, and the Watchmen stories. Both have gone off into spin-off land and become (my opinion) derivative of their own original series but both were ground-breaking in their day. If you’re at all curious about the history of com— excuse me, “graphic novels” as an art form, they’re significant milestones you ought to be familiar with. Look for issues 1-20 of Elfquest (Wendy and Richard Pini), and 1-12 of the Watchmen (Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons).
And from my Dad’s generation, the Pogo stories were also historically significant. During the McCarthy era, when significant sectors of the film and print media were running scared of the anti-Communist witch hunters, Walt Kelly was gleefully publishing the antics of “Simple J. Malarkey” and the Jack Acid Society. Brilliant, hilarious and sharp-edged political satire a good two decades before Doonesbury. Panels were much larger then, and the gorgeous detail in the artwork was a high-water mark that won’t be seen again.
Interesting examples of the history of the art form, but really only of interest to a specialized audience.
Jastcaird about 9 years ago
I think this suspense-building is clumsy. Quil would have offered to show, or Luann would have requested to be shown a picture of Prudence. He can’t be oblivious to her being anxious about his attachment to another girl or woman, and he’d be cruel not to allay her concern. And even Luann is not enough of a laydown not to make her feelings known. As I say, a lame telling of what might be an interesting plot twist.
colcam about 9 years ago
How many people are voting that Pru is three times Quill’s age?
seismic-2 Premium Member about 9 years ago
This whole story line is predicated on Quill’s and Luann’s acting like idiots, with Quill too dumb to realize that Luann would naturally be suspicious of Pru, and Luann’s being too dumb to realize that she could find out more about Pru simply by asking Quill about her. Story lines that hinge on the characters’ dumbness are generally not satisfying. I hope this one is quickly resolved.

Alternate prediction about Prudence —She’ll breeze in, have few defining characteristics, magically produce a successful show (followed by a party attended by all the old high school gang), breeze out, and that’ll be the end of that. Kinda like Mr. Gray.
