This arc is really sad. The last thing I wanted to see is a fight. I’ll check back next week.

If you’ve been in “lots and lots” of relationships, I’d doubt many – if any – were serious.

The Evanses are evidently caught in a dilemma. Common decency demands that they bring their title character out of obscurity for a story arc, but they don’t have any new material for her. Unless there’s some kind of big reveal ‘round Wednesday or Thursday, this is shaping up to be just a week-long insult-fest about non-existent relationships. Better to let her grow up a little. I’d even rather see her mope again about her lack of direction.

WTF ??? The Evans’s continue to surprise us. Just when we brew up hope for Tiffany – she turns into a *$@#!! This is beyond competition – just total cruelty. I’m counting on the Evans’s to land another surprise – to keep the game in the ball park.

Long shot – Maybe Tiff is trying to steer Luann toward Gunther…

Why is Tiff still behaving like a b****y little high schooler? And why isn’t Luann telling her to eff off and mind her own dang business? Tiff is being a jerk for no apparent reason, not sure why Luann tolerates being around her.

Tiff sounds like - “Are you qualified as a marriage counselor?”- “Of course I am. I’ve been in three marriages.”

Tiffany is starting to sound like Blanche from the Golden Girls.

Greg Evans seems to present Tiffany in two different ways in two different settings. One when she’s at college and away from college. Often uses her as an impetus to spur Luann (and now Bernice?) to take some action.

Perhaps the line from “Gold Dust Woman” could apply as a sobering reminder to Tiffany, of the futility of striving after superficial appearances: “Take your silver spoon, and dig your grave” (♪)….

Talk to the hand, sister!
There is plenty of blame to go around here. Tiffany’s “put-down” in panel 2 was in fact a casual, honest, but (as too often) thoughtless observation: in Tiff’s view, not an insult but the simple unvarnished truth. Of course, we may (along with Luann) hope she was wrong.
Luann immediately takes offense, for which we can’t really blame her, though had she thought before her retort, this “girl talk” at the kiddie-care center would not be escalating out of control and putting Tiff on the defensive with her patently false assertion of lots and lots of relationships. In fact, she is a very lonely girl (which is why Gunthie could be good for her as well as for him)….
JayBluE over 7 years ago
Though Luann has a point, she isn’t exactly the example to hold up, in any ‘comparison’ to Tiffany. Her one romance, though not superficial, was a “whirlwind” and relatively brief… and a bit turbulent (a lot of ‘passion’, but also a lot of arguments only silenced by a quick “kiss and make up”, and a lot of “My! My! My!” from both parties).
-
Conversely, though by no means “blemish free” (but, then, who is?), still, I’d think that Brad and Toni would be an example of “Quality over Quantity”, in the way that their relationship progressed and improved, over the long haul, and no doubt likely has the potential to continue to do so.

I think that Tiffany is meant to ‘stir the pot’ in Luann’s life and circle of friends. There’s usually a male or female instigator in any group of friends who tend to cause trouble. If the Evans drew/wrote her in as another good friend, many of you would surely find this strip boring. Tiffany causes many emotions in us and that’s exciting…one way or another.

Seriously???!!! In the 21st century it’s still assumed if a woman never marries she will live with her parents forever?!?!?! What will that maker her, a ‘spinster’? Sheesh! We define people, much less women, by whether they have a romantic relationship?
luann1212 over 7 years ago
Lets looks at this objectively keeping in mind we are talking about Luannverse. Also I am biased for both young women, Luann of course being the one whose world this is, and Tiffany, being an important part of it. I like both of them, Luann because I have been with her since I started reading this comic, back in the 80s I believe, and Tiffany for the same reason. One might agree with Tiffany’s assessment/taunt that Luann will never get married, given her history with her romantic view of relationships, and one might agree with Luann’s assessment/riposte that she, at least, has had a serious relationship, mean Quill. THey have different views of the relationship world in general, Tiff’s being transactional, and Luann’s being romantic. I think that I would give Tiff some slack, I think she probably has in her character a depth that she has not realized yet. Being rich, so concerned about appearances, being a bimbo in some eyes (and I absolutely HATE that term about women, there is nothing comparable for men) and shallow, so she thinks, influences how she looks at the world. Luann comes from a better, more loving background, although I don’t think Tiff’s dad at least does not love her, but he is busy providing for his baby girl, and busy is the operative word. I think we have to be patient as to how this arc will develop. I just hope that if Tiffany finds her “depth” her heart is not broken, although sometimes to grow one’s heart has to be broken.

@TRILOGY: Because Tiffany doesn’t like Luann, and usually doesn’t miss an opportunity to take an action that will hurt her in some way. Don’t forget, Luann almost missed the chance to get this job at ‘Kids First’ because Tiffany was interviewed first and, as Tiffany was leaving, the interviewer told her to send in the next candidate. Tiffany saw Luann sitting there, waiting to be interviewed, and told the interviewer that no one else was there.

What does being married have to do with living at her parents house. Tons of married folks live with their parents (or their parents live with them). Tons of unmarried folks live separately from their parents. This is such a stupid argument.
locake over 7 years ago
I know Tiff is only joking, but why would she think Luann would never be married? All types of people find someone who loves them enough to marry them. They don’t have to be beautiful or have a wonderful personality, just find someone similar to themselves. There are probably many males in real life who think a female like Luann would be a wonderful wife.

I feel sorry for the character, Tiffany. She is exiled by her own father, and there is no evidence of any mother. Tiff may well have been the result of one of her father’s affairs. The clothes and makeup are an attempt to attract someone who will care for her. The attitude is just self protection, quite understandable for a girl who feels rejected. Like she told Gunther, she’s a tease, not a sleaze……….meaning she’s all yack and no shack. When she meets the guy who actually cares for her, she will melt into him like whipped cream on a cup of hot chocolate.

Tiffany’s always the agitator when Luann and her friends are around. And if I recall correctly, Brad was finished with FF training and had a job before he moved out on his own with TJ. What a twisted, sad view of life Tiffany has if she thinks Luann will be with her parents forever.
LadyJ4444 over 7 years ago
Who says Luann has to get married before she can move out? Living with them forever because she’ll never marry? What century is Tiff living in and why is she suddenly being a witch again?

Luann could have something like.. ‘well f you have had so many quality relationships… ……..none of which have been evident to any of us……. then you should be married by now… and it looks like you aren’t…’ Then cut off the conversation.

For some reason, Tiffany appears hell-bent on trying to aggravate Luann this week. It is an interesting construct, because as we have seen… sometimes Tiffany is more gentle and kind, and sometimes she has been more like this.
.
In some ways, I like this juxtaposition of two very different “types” of Tiffany. To me, I tend to view her goading, sarcasm, and her aloof nature to be a form of defense or shield. If that is the case, what is she “protecting” herself from with her shield of sarcasm this week?
.
1. Perhaps it is because she has recognized how she was “promoted” out of her Kids First position where she interacted with kids to being basically office help….. because she was not overly successful interacting with kids?
.
2. Perhaps her being an only child makes her jealous of Luann having another sibling, even though a sadness at being an only child may be something Tiffany does not fully realize.
3. It could also be that Tiffany just got up on the wrong side of the bed today and decided to poke at Luann a bit.
.
As a last comment about Luann, I am not so sure that I would qualify Luann’s relationship with Quill as “serious”. To me, it always read as a high school romance of sorts on Luann’s part (even when she was at Pitt CC), but it never seemed so utterly serious for Quill. In general I think that Luann thinks and takes all of her relationships FAR too seriously for what she needs to at her age and stage in life. I would think she would be far better off casually dating a variety of folks until she has established more of her own individual identity. She is still very much trying to figure out who she is to be able to have a truly “serious” relationship with anyone, IMO.
.
In regards to Tiffany, she too has not had a “serious” relationship. But, the reasons I think are different. For me, Tiffany has always preferred (or at least sought out) rather superficial relationships with folks
Argy.Bargy2 over 7 years ago
@SISYPHOS: Gunther (who decidedly does not want to be called ‘Gunthie’) still considers Tiffany to be inferior to him intellectually (and even described her as ‘stupid’ to Bernice, while he was showing his irritation with Bernice for not wanting a relationship with him.) As long as Gunther has this kind of attitude toward Tiffany, he would not be good for her at all…

Tiff better hope that a Tsunami doesn’t come rolling in. With her nose so far up in the air gallons of seawater would run down it and she would be the first to drown!
Outsideplaying over 7 years ago
It could very well be that Tiffany is actually jealous in some ways of Luann, the fact she has a close family, is able to attract a boy line Quill for example without really trying too hard (in her mind), works well with the kids, and seemingly does well in school on her own. Her attitude with Luann may simply boil down to this

Re: Pipe Tobacco’s comment: “…….sometimes Tiffany is more gentle and kind, and sometimes she has been more like this……….”-—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————The gentle and kind Tiffany, to my knowledge, only comes around in the presence of a guy. Luann (on the other hand) is always a target for criticism and mocking. Tiffany is snarky toward her female peers unless there’s something she wants. Mostly, she mostly sees other girls as the ‘competition’.
RSH over 7 years ago
Luann is like Charlie Brown who is always fooled into thinking that Lucy will hold the ball so he can come running and kick it. But Lucy always pulls the ball away. Just like Luann will engage Tiffany in what she anticipates will be normal conversation about people and life. Yet Tiffany always turns whatever Luann has to say into an insult or nasty remark. Luann continues to bait herself in that way.

The question is, why is Greg leading us through this situation with these two? What is it leading to? A discussion of Gunther? Bernice? There’s got to be some reason for this.

Luann’s life has been and is even now full of quirky males. What’s to choose from? The most stand-up guys now are her father and brother. Well, maybe Ox.

I’m pretty tired of the current story arcs. Pretty much done with the whole Gunther/Les nonsense. Kind of wish Piro would go somewhere else. I’d like to see more happy Brad and Toni stuff. If this is a “comic” strip, there isn’t much to laugh about these days.
