Puddles is a fantastic prop plot piece. He likes and responds to Jack’s ability to summon him with a whistle. The point is Jack is a handsome, fit, hot young man, who likes Luann obviously, is a gentleman, and lets face it, if her dog likes him, she will even more. It is so obvious where this is leading too, romance. People allow personal issues with jocks, and I had them too, although being a big guy I did not have the problem that other nerdy types might have, I could play some mean basketball as a kid, jocks are not per se horrible people. Jack has shown no attributes of being a bad person, quite the opposite. He is a flirt, likes girls, but I think he could, and maybe is in love with this one. I think this may not develop more this coming week, although one never knows, but clearly the slow progression to full fledged and maybe much more intimate and passionate relationship is slowly building here.
@LUANN1212: You may be in for a surprise if it turns out that this arc is really just about dogs and not people… for me, that would actually be a relief. After all the groaning and moaning over the people in this ’toon lately, it would be fun to see all the dogs in a dark park end up slobbering over Jack, and have Luann slowly leaving…
Looks like Jack is trying to win over Luann and the “Luann” readers. I’m not generalizing about all jocks or all big guys – however Jack is more than a bit narcissistic and so far not that interesting. The two inch forehead suggests a narrow range of behavioral responses.
The Evanses have taken a lot of trouble to show Jack as an extremely good person is just about every arc he’s been in. I assume there’s a reason for that.
Anyone who is cool with having a muddy dog jump on them is ok in my book. Heck, I don’t like it when MY dogs do it. FWIW, my mom had a corgi who would rarely come when she called. Frequently that was my job when I came over- “will you get Chelsea to come in?” She is now our dog and knows better than to ignore me, most of the time!
There’s a lot of talk about Jack being narcistic today. Sure he is. This is quite common in adolescents and young adults. They are highly aware of the changes in body configuration that they are undergoing. Boys often receive positive affirmation about their size, strength, and “good looks;” especially from their mothers [also Aunts :o) ] which reinforces it.
The portrait of Jack so far seems to be; “an outgoing guy, friendly, fun loving, likeable. Big and strong but not always aware of his strength in all situations. A guy girls would feel safe with on a date.”
G&K may be about to explore a non hormonal-driven relationship development between young adults (Luann and Jack). It will probably be slow moving. Like Brad and Toni it may be painfully slow at times. The tipoff to more serious dating and possibly romantic feelings (IMHO) will be the introduction of Jack to Frank and Nancy.
Jack’s drawn appearance doesn’t seem to be one for a major character. However, appearances change. Witness Brad, Gunther, Tiff, et al.
I don’t believe the plot is moving in this direction, but Jack could be a good foil for controlling… Les. If that is where GnK are taking us, in our timeline, it will take at least a year.
Jack is my kind of guy!!! I think, despite our differences, we could have been great friends and talk about dogs 24/7! Oo! And send eachother cute/funny dog pictures!
For all the people here who are afraid or hate dogs.., I am so sorry for youButGo help out at shelter and see the dogs and cats beaten and starved by people. Bad dogs are because of bad owners. Work with these poor dogs or just sit there and read to them. like children they need rules. No baby talk from me to all my dogs but I make up words for them.
There is a very old cover of a “Men’s Magazine” (Playboy?) which featured an old gag, that would be considered slightly offensive today. It’s a “Dogs eye view” of a man and woman’s lower legs. The gag is if a guy wants to meet a young lady, (who’s also walking HER dog) then he trains his dog to “accidentally” wrap his leash around the young woman’s legs. Then while profusely apologizing and “bad dogging” his own pooch, he makes his introduction, and hopefully gets the young woman’s phone number, and eventually a date.
If these two DO become an item (And yeah, the Jury is still out on that) then Jack will be the first steady boyfriend that Luann had that I actually LIKE.
I kinda think this will continue next week and the week after. Then when August comes, unless Irma snaps out of it, then it’s off to Vegas.
My impressions of Jack are changing for the better; because he’s an animal person, gentle with Max and he instinctively knows how to communicate with Puddles. Notice Max’s eyes in the first panel then in the 3rd. Do I detect a bit of jealousy? This has to continue on Monday… I hope.
I have no problem with people “baby-talking” to their pets. I don’t do it much, but I really don’t pay that much attention to others. If the dog and owner both appear happy, everything is fine with me. But this arc does remind me of a funny comic I saw somewhere a while back, and darned if I can remember which one it was. It’s something like this, as best I recall (probably not exactly correct, but I hope close. If anyone knows which comic this was, I’d really appreciate a post telling me). Anyway, several dogs are dressed up as detectives, or policemen…The “head” dog is explaining that they will now be investigating a new case – “Who’s a Good Boy?” Sounds silly here, but it really was funny to me.

He has a specific whistle that will attract only one dog in the park full of dogs. That is a pretty incredible feat. He’s like the Aquaman of dogs.

Jack has hidden talents, and he’s not mean to animals—Luann could do worse! Hmm, I wonder if he can cook? ;-)

We don’t need much memory to be reminded of what Puddles has on his tongue besides mud. Jack may now be jumped by larger dogs.

Some good signs about Jack:
1. Puddles came right to him when he whistled.
2. Puddles obviously loves Jack, right off the bat.
3. Jack doesn’t mind a bit having mud from a dog on him!
