Okay, Gunther should Explain to Bets exactly what is going on with Tiffany AND that she’s just a “friend.” In fact, he should invite Bets along to the “photo-shoot.” That way Bets can meet Tiffany in a controlled environment, as opposed to an “ambush.” With Bets along this will prove to her there’s no hanky-panky is going on between Gunny and Tiff. Plus Bets would look good modelling Tiffany’s old clothes.
And Who Knows? Bets and Tiffany just MIGHT get along. In fact, Bets might even let Tiffany room with her. It’s all good.
Oh, and it’s nice to see Bets and Gunther are STILL an item. And No, I don’t think that this photo-shoot is going to change that.

I had a vision that Gunther dates Bets and gets the benefit of being with a woman who is a little older and with more experience – hopefully it gets sexual. In the meantime, Tiffany winds up dating Les, who goes for it – with or without experience. After these relationships are over – Gunther & Tiffany wind up on another nature hike – followed by Tiffany taking a shower. This time the two of them make it happen.
When’s Gunther going to learn to say, “I need to take this call, I’m sorry” and walk out of earshot? He knows Bets is a jealous chick, so of course she’s going to eavesdrop and try to figure out who he’s talking to. Jealousy doesn’t make anyone attractive, male or female.
I get it Gunther your friends are important. But when it comes to potential love interest, your friends need to take a back seat. Or atleast let’s Bets know straight up what is or is not going on. I mean he did have a crush on Tiff not too long ago. Jealous or not, no just friends female should be more important than a more than friends one.
HOORAY!! Gunther is the first person Tiffany thought for help her sell her old things! It’s odd that yesterday when Tiff had this great idea, she was picturing all her designer duds hanging there. Today all she can think of is jewelry & lingerie? I think this is just G & K being salacious for the sake of annoying Bets, again. Tiff would do way better unloading some of her clothing that is probably hardly worn and no longer fits.
She’s going to have to accept Gunther has friends that are both guys and girls. Instead of getting jealous ask what’s going on and get to know his friends.
If Bets is the “sci fi gal” from earlier in the strip, I noticed they made the color of her face a lot lighter than they did when they first showed her….HMMMM!
Wow! So many dissociated thoughts upon first read:
1) So Bets and Gunther now have “history.” This is obviously a movie date and not the Comicon first date. He and Bets have not had the “they’re just old classmates” discussion. Although the Gunther side of the conversation is more than a little eye-raising.
2) Photos? Lingerie photos? Will these be manikin displayed? And who will be the “manikin?” We already know that Gunther’s bedroom has doubled as a changing room with Luann. Is it Tiff “turn?”
3) Once again Gunther is the shuttlecock in the badminton game of life. On the one hand he continues to be thrown together with romantic interests from the past; at their instigation. On the other hand he continues to appear the victim, innocently bumbling his way through life, being tossed back and forth over some existential net! :o)
4) Greg continues to dangle risqué innuendos involving Gunther with either Luann or Tiffany. Who is he toying with? Gunther or his readers?

Is it me, or do the Tiffany character’s arcs threaten to outshine (even overpower) the Luann character’s arcs?
Bets and Tiffany have not yet met. She’s seen Luann at the Fuse, but not Tiff. Does Greg have a first meeting setup in store for us? Similarly, Gunther and Jack have never (to my memory) been formally introduced. In fact, Gunther has not yet met the “new and improved” Tiffany! Well, well, well!
If Greg runs an episode of Gunther and Bets that gets around to previous relationships we’ll know she’ll be around for a long time. She may also be a transitional character modifying the Gunther-Tiffany relationship.
There is much ado about Bets’ color in today’s comments. You don’t think Greg actually had Bets made up deliberately as Uhura from Star Trek as pat of a cosplay-look for the first date do you? That would be very edgy in this environment. Very strange… everybody says so. :o)
This is just a misunderstanding on Bets” part. Although you have to admit the conversation sounds sketchy. But wait til Bets actually meets Tiffany, with Tiffany bring her usual possessive and flirty self with Gunther. The fur will fly!!!!! I hate this for Gunther, as he really hates conflict. And Tiffany has a tendency to use and abuse Gunther according to her whims and then send him packing. I hope she doesn’t ruin this relationship for him just because she can.
My impression: G&K continue to insist upon portraying Gunther as a klutz, apparently wanting to emphasize that his (lack of) love life (or any life for that matter) is always his fault.Tiffany continues to be a self-centered brat, expecting everybody to jump at her slightest whim. And just enough shade thrown on Bets for folks to think that she might be just as controlling (and dangerous) as Irma.
What if it were Bets who kept getting phone calls from other guys while she was on a date with Gunthie? What if she cut him off mid sentence and told him “hold on” while she answered those calls?
People here would be vilifying her. “Rude” is the nicest thing they would call her. But because SHE’S getting upset with Gunthie for treating HER that way she’s “jealous” and “controlling.”
To me it seems like Gunthie is conveying tie message: “Hey Bets, I know you’re right here with me, talking to me, but whoever is on the other end of this phone is MUCH more important to me than YOU are.” I mean he can’t just glance at caller ID and let it go to voicemail? As someone above said, Tiff’s not gonna be calling him for some REAL (i.e. life threatening) emergency.
It can be a natural reaction but that doesn’t mean it’s a good one. A better follow up could have been, “everything ok?” It give Gunther a chance to explain without feeling defensive about helping a friend.
Gunther (or is it ALL Millennials) just don’t have a clue. You don’t answer your cell phone while on a date. You can look at it, just it case it might be an emergency, but answering calls or replying to text messages is just rude.
Why does Tiffany need Gunther to take photos for her to sell her clothes? She has a camera on her phone and she can take her own pictures. She does not need to be in the photos.

After Bets and Gunther’s experiences at the Fuse, she should know he’s close to and cares about his friends. He did say “Hold on” , rather than “Excuse me”, which is probably not used by many now. She could ask what that call was about before she assumes anything. I hope Tiff isn’t getting into a redo in reverse with Ann about lingerie sales or she doesn’t expect to model them for Gunth’s camera. Good grief!

Tiffany, panel three. She cut Gunther off in the middle of a phone call, in order to take a call from Les, Gunther’s mortal enemy. Sure, Tiffany wasn’t dating Gunther. Sure, Gunther wasn’t “With” Tiffany at the time. But cut him off she did. And with a “Hold On.” And yet NOBODY accused Tiffany of being Rude back then. The Old “Double Standard” in FULL force.
All Gunny has to do is explain to Bets what going on, and it’s up to her to accept it or not. The Question IS: Does Gunther Owe Bets an explanation? As far as We know, they are just “casual daters.” But it seems apparent, (At least to Me) that Bets is taking (Or WANTS to take) this “friendship” to the next level, but she hasn’t told Gunny yet. Time to have a heart to heart. But IF this arc continues Monday, I wonder if Gunther will suggest that Bets accompany him when he meets Tiffany or will Bets INSIST that SHE go along when he meets Tiffany.
Gunther still doesn’t realize how rude it is to take a call or text when he is in the company of others. He did this at the start of their date and that is why they left the Fuse and continued the date elsewhere. He can get back to Tiffany later. Plus, the conversation does sound bad enough to make his date wonder and have second thoughts.
At this point, Gunther should invite Bets to go with him to take the photos of Tiffany’s stuff for sale. If Tiffany tries to compete in Bets’s presence – it would be Tiffany that should get dumped – not Bets.
Clueless Gunther probably needs a dominant woman – to make up for his lack of instincts. Gunther will probably be a good breadwinner. Better coming home to a young woman like Bets than coming home to Irma.
Gunther interrupted Bats mid sentence to take a call he could have returned later. Just as one wouldn’t answer a call in a theater or church service, one shouldn’t take a call during a date. I am surprised that Gunther hasn’t realized that Bets won’t tolerate it again.
The problem is that the Evans’ like going to the same well over and over (i.e. no or glacial character growth or development).
Recognizing we get upset with friends and then just forgive them or work it out and we remain friends, I am glad that Tiff turned to Gunther for help. I do think they are good for each other.
Bets could have said something like, “Oh, it sounds like something’s come up…” and let Gunther start filling in the details. That, however doesn’t allow the drama to erupt or the story lines to advance quickly. (Though I do recall a Valentine’s Day lasting two weeks once.)
I am not young enough to know what the current etiquette is, only what bugs me. Yeah, phone calls and texts during dates and conversations bug me.
It seems that Gunther can’t NOT answer his phone when it rings. Nerdy or moderately autistic people cling to habits as a way of coping. It’s hard for them to take in what is needed in the moment.
For what it’s worth, late in the day, is anybody out there still reading?
Regarding Bets ’ hue: An unsatisfactory, but possible explanation was given somewhere above (not by me) that perhapsBets was doing Uhura in a cosplay.
Folks who have read my comments on Dick Tracy know that I have a pretty low opinion of cosplay, but that just might explain why Betswas black when we first met her – and is not black now.
But it is unsatisfying because it does make it look like G&K are copping out!
Time to bring in some fresh arc-dwellers, or give the old ones some oxygen. Crystal? Knute? When is one of you going to tell us about the new baby that is on the way? Today’s strip is another 70s sitcom “quality” gag, obnoxious because it’s at the expense of developing the Gunther/Bets relationship in a realistic manner.
Either that or Gunther really is autistic. I’ve never thought that, and don’t now – I think it’s just bad writing for a cheap joke (rimshot, they’ll be here all week). If we take this at face (see footnote below, the programming doesn’t let me use an asterisk) value…well, I’ve been around socially inept engineers most of my adult life, and none of them are this socially inept. This is a different, Olympic (at least bronze medal) level of inept that is only plausible in comic strips or if there really is a serious mental disorder, which is just not where I think Gunther actually is.
I feel confident that my many engineer friends, if fortunate enough to have a second date with Bets, would definitely not take that call, would absolutely not interrupt Bets to take the call, and would absolutely absolutely know how what they’re saying would sound. The more autisticish ones would avoid the “call” to answer the phone, by leaving the phone at home.
Footnote: Not a further comment on what is obviously a coloring error.
This is a great Story Arc, and Mr. Evans is playing it so well. Both Bets and Gunther are doing what they think is right, and so far, they both are. We get to see how this will play out with a character that has grown wonderfully over the years and a brand new voice that’s wonderfully interesting and familiar to my life. Thanks G.E.!!
Umm, Bets has no reason to be possessive. They are not bf and gf at this point. Gunth doesn’t owe her an explanation, but will probably give one anyway. Is this another comic-con, or a movie they are coming from? It can’t be the same first date? I hope they have more in common than fantasy.
Common courtesy would dictate that his phone would at least be silenced during a date. Period. He could check his messages at a time when she is in the loo or getting popcorn. He cut her off (mid-sentence, no less!) to take a call from another broad. That is just straight up rude. Double rude since this is the second time he’s done it. If I were Bets, Gunther would be in my rearview mirror by now.
A question for the artist. Back on April 1st, this girl that he is dating is definitely a “Black” female. Today you draw her as a Latino, Caucasian Female. Will the artists please determine the ethnicity of this character and then explain his “Change”? Quite upset right now that either the artists or colourist can’t decide on such an intrinsic issue.
ok, I’m going to point out the obvious…While I realize Greg did this for comedic effect…
1) Gunth is largely a prim and proper person, and given previous conversations with Bets, he should be prioritizing his time with her… i.e. caller-id says it’s Tiffany, Luann, or Bernice (or any of his gal-pals) let it roll to voice mail and see what they want later. Sure they are “friends” but if they wanted “drop everything for me privileges” they should have made Gunther a priority when he was single.
2) While there is a jealously thing going on, let’s not forget that Bets has dealt with Les and knows he lives with Les… yeah it’s unfair but that’s how guilt by association works. Right now she’s seen a lot of ladies with a lot of interest in the man she’s dating from the first moment she met him and he’s doing a bad job of making it clear that he isn’t interested in them (probably because he is, but he’s consigned to being in the zone).
3) Friend zone is a notorious place to keep “back ups” and “options” so while being “friends” with girls isn’t a bad thing, appearing more emotionally involved with them than the person you’re attempting to start a relationship is Again, our regular leading lady and the supporting roles have all cast Gunth into the Friend zone. so treat them like you would any other friend when you’re busy… get back with them later.
4) Gunth’s on a date with an equally geeky girl watching a superhero movie… he should be totally in your “zone” with her…

Wow! So many dissociated thoughts upon first read:
1) So Bets and Gunther now have “history.” This is obviously a movie date and not the Comicon first date. He and Bets have not had the “they’re just old classmates” discussion. Although the Gunther side of the conversation is more than a little eye-raising.
2) Photos? Lingerie photos? Will these be manikin displayed? And who will be the “manikin?” We already know that Gunther’s bedroom has doubled as a changing room with Luann. Is it Tiff “turn?”
3) Once again Gunther is the shuttlecock in the badminton game of life. On the one hand he continues to be thrown together with romantic interests from the past; at their instigation. On the other hand he continues to appear the victim, innocently bumbling his way through life, being tossed back and forth over some existential net! :o)
4) Greg continues to dangle risqué innuendos involving Gunther with either Luann or Tiffany. Who is he toying with? Gunther or his readers?

Second thoughts:
Is it me, or do the Tiffany character’s arcs threaten to outshine (even overpower) the Luann character’s arcs?
Bets and Tiffany have not yet met. She’s seen Luann at the Fuse, but not Tiff. Does Greg have a first meeting setup in store for us? Similarly, Gunther and Jack have never (to my memory) been formally introduced. In fact, Gunther has not yet met the “new and improved” Tiffany! Well, well, well!
If Greg runs an episode of Gunther and Bets that gets around to previous relationships we’ll know she’ll be around for a long time. She may also be a transitional character modifying the Gunther-Tiffany relationship.
There is much ado about Bets’ color in today’s comments. You don’t think Greg actually had Bets made up deliberately as Uhura from Star Trek as pat of a cosplay-look for the first date do you? That would be very edgy in this environment. Very strange… everybody says so. :o)

This is just a misunderstanding on Bets” part. Although you have to admit the conversation sounds sketchy. But wait til Bets actually meets Tiffany, with Tiffany bring her usual possessive and flirty self with Gunther. The fur will fly!!!!! I hate this for Gunther, as he really hates conflict. And Tiffany has a tendency to use and abuse Gunther according to her whims and then send him packing. I hope she doesn’t ruin this relationship for him just because she can.

My impression: G&K continue to insist upon portraying Gunther as a klutz, apparently wanting to emphasize that his (lack of) love life (or any life for that matter) is always his fault. Tiffany continues to be a self-centered brat, expecting everybody to jump at her slightest whim. And just enough shade thrown on Bets for folks to think that she might be just as controlling (and dangerous) as Irma.
Maybe that’s why G&K bleached her!

OK think about this….
What if it were Bets who kept getting phone calls from other guys while she was on a date with Gunthie? What if she cut him off mid sentence and told him “hold on” while she answered those calls?
People here would be vilifying her. “Rude” is the nicest thing they would call her. But because SHE’S getting upset with Gunthie for treating HER that way she’s “jealous” and “controlling.”
To me it seems like Gunthie is conveying tie message: “Hey Bets, I know you’re right here with me, talking to me, but whoever is on the other end of this phone is MUCH more important to me than YOU are.” I mean he can’t just glance at caller ID and let it go to voicemail? As someone above said, Tiff’s not gonna be calling him for some REAL (i.e. life threatening) emergency.

It can be a natural reaction but that doesn’t mean it’s a good one. A better follow up could have been, “everything ok?” It give Gunther a chance to explain without feeling defensive about helping a friend.

After Bets and Gunther’s experiences at the Fuse, she should know he’s close to and cares about his friends. He did say “Hold on” , rather than “Excuse me”, which is probably not used by many now. She could ask what that call was about before she assumes anything. I hope Tiff isn’t getting into a redo in reverse with Ann about lingerie sales or she doesn’t expect to model them for Gunth’s camera. Good grief!

Tiffany, panel three. She cut Gunther off in the middle of a phone call, in order to take a call from Les, Gunther’s mortal enemy. Sure, Tiffany wasn’t dating Gunther. Sure, Gunther wasn’t “With” Tiffany at the time. But cut him off she did. And with a “Hold On.” And yet NOBODY accused Tiffany of being Rude back then. The Old “Double Standard” in FULL force.
All Gunny has to do is explain to Bets what going on, and it’s up to her to accept it or not. The Question IS: Does Gunther Owe Bets an explanation? As far as We know, they are just “casual daters.” But it seems apparent, (At least to Me) that Bets is taking (Or WANTS to take) this “friendship” to the next level, but she hasn’t told Gunny yet. Time to have a heart to heart. But IF this arc continues Monday, I wonder if Gunther will suggest that Bets accompany him when he meets Tiffany or will Bets INSIST that SHE go along when he meets Tiffany.

Gunther still doesn’t realize how rude it is to take a call or text when he is in the company of others. He did this at the start of their date and that is why they left the Fuse and continued the date elsewhere. He can get back to Tiffany later. Plus, the conversation does sound bad enough to make his date wonder and have second thoughts.

Gunther interrupted Bats mid sentence to take a call he could have returned later. Just as one wouldn’t answer a call in a theater or church service, one shouldn’t take a call during a date. I am surprised that Gunther hasn’t realized that Bets won’t tolerate it again.

The problem is that the Evans’ like going to the same well over and over (i.e. no or glacial character growth or development).
Recognizing we get upset with friends and then just forgive them or work it out and we remain friends, I am glad that Tiff turned to Gunther for help. I do think they are good for each other.
Bets could have said something like, “Oh, it sounds like something’s come up…” and let Gunther start filling in the details. That, however doesn’t allow the drama to erupt or the story lines to advance quickly. (Though I do recall a Valentine’s Day lasting two weeks once.)
I am not young enough to know what the current etiquette is, only what bugs me. Yeah, phone calls and texts during dates and conversations bug me.

Regarding Bets ’ hue: An unsatisfactory, but possible explanation was given somewhere above (not by me) that perhaps Bets was doing Uhura in a cosplay.
Folks who have read my comments on Dick Tracy know that I have a pretty low opinion of cosplay, but that just might explain why Bets was black when we first met her – and is not black now.
But it is unsatisfying because it does make it look like G&K are copping out!

Today’s strip is another 70s sitcom “quality” gag, obnoxious because it’s at the expense of developing the Gunther/Bets relationship in a realistic manner.
Either that or Gunther really is autistic. I’ve never thought that, and don’t now – I think it’s just bad writing for a cheap joke (rimshot, they’ll be here all week). If we take this at face (see footnote below, the programming doesn’t let me use an asterisk) value…well, I’ve been around socially inept engineers most of my adult life, and none of them are this socially inept. This is a different, Olympic (at least bronze medal) level of inept that is only plausible in comic strips or if there really is a serious mental disorder, which is just not where I think Gunther actually is.
I feel confident that my many engineer friends, if fortunate enough to have a second date with Bets, would definitely not take that call, would absolutely not interrupt Bets to take the call, and would absolutely absolutely know how what they’re saying would sound. The more autisticish ones would avoid the “call” to answer the phone, by leaving the phone at home.
Footnote: Not a further comment on what is obviously a coloring error.

This is a great Story Arc, and Mr. Evans is playing it so well. Both Bets and Gunther are doing what they think is right, and so far, they both are. We get to see how this will play out with a character that has grown wonderfully over the years and a brand new voice that’s wonderfully interesting and familiar to my life. Thanks G.E.!!

Common courtesy would dictate that his phone would at least be silenced during a date. Period. He could check his messages at a time when she is in the loo or getting popcorn. He cut her off (mid-sentence, no less!) to take a call from another broad. That is just straight up rude. Double rude since this is the second time he’s done it. If I were Bets, Gunther would be in my rearview mirror by now.

A question for the artist. Back on April 1st, this girl that he is dating is definitely a “Black” female. Today you draw her as a Latino, Caucasian Female. Will the artists please determine the ethnicity of this character and then explain his “Change”? Quite upset right now that either the artists or colourist can’t decide on such an intrinsic issue.

ok, I’m going to point out the obvious…While I realize Greg did this for comedic effect…
1) Gunth is largely a prim and proper person, and given previous conversations with Bets, he should be prioritizing his time with her… i.e. caller-id says it’s Tiffany, Luann, or Bernice (or any of his gal-pals) let it roll to voice mail and see what they want later. Sure they are “friends” but if they wanted “drop everything for me privileges” they should have made Gunther a priority when he was single.
2) While there is a jealously thing going on, let’s not forget that Bets has dealt with Les and knows he lives with Les… yeah it’s unfair but that’s how guilt by association works. Right now she’s seen a lot of ladies with a lot of interest in the man she’s dating from the first moment she met him and he’s doing a bad job of making it clear that he isn’t interested in them (probably because he is, but he’s consigned to being in the zone).
3) Friend zone is a notorious place to keep “back ups” and “options” so while being “friends” with girls isn’t a bad thing, appearing more emotionally involved with them than the person you’re attempting to start a relationship is Again, our regular leading lady and the supporting roles have all cast Gunth into the Friend zone. so treat them like you would any other friend when you’re busy… get back with them later.
4) Gunth’s on a date with an equally geeky girl watching a superhero movie… he should be totally in your “zone” with her…
