My inner thermostat and hair agrees with the Woman’s assessment of summer! Summer is just getting hotter and hotter as the years go along; it is definitely NOT my favorite time of the year! I am so looking forward to the cooling breezes of autumn but will probably have to wait till November before that happens.
I used to love summer, the hotter the better. Now, my comfort zone is between 65° and 72° and I find myself avoiding all of the many festivals held around here because I just can’t take the heat anymore. If these are the golden years, I’ll happily go back to silver or tin…
I have things that I like and dislike about each of the four seasons, but overall, my favorite is winter. I really LOVE when everything is blanketed in white. Trees are covered in snow, and if the sky is blanketed, then the street lamps can make the night even brighter than the day. =‘3 We also get powdery snow around here, so it’s generally less of a pain to go through.
The biggest thing that I don’t like about winter is how cold it is. XD; I have a history of being sensitive to cooler temps. (Though thankfully, my immune system seems to be on the stronger side.) And admittedly, the last winter that we had lasted way too long (started early… I think, and it DEFINITELY ended late). Messed with the growing seasons for the farmers, too. =/
But anyway, still my favorite. =)
How about you guys? What are your favorite seasons? =)
Sunday Funday!!!! Ok, the Mega-Orb gives so much, I’d like to give back to the Orb, but of course, I can’t do it alone. Since soon we will no longer need a spoiler zone, I think if we had a designated spot each week for folks to share something fun, great news, a funny story, a joke, anything. This is not to prescribe that this is the only place or time to do it, if you have great news or something to share at anytime, by all means DO so!
Just like the spoiler zone, whoever thinks of it first on a Sunday should start it, even if you don’t have something to share!!!
She-Who-Just-Caught-The-First-Lizard-Of-Spring gave me a Father’s Day card. It was addressed to “slave #3”. I am honoured that She thought of me.
(My wife is Chief Slave. My son is Most Favoured Slave. And 1 Sept is both the first day of Spring and Father’s Day this year.)
My main job is to warm up a patch on the sofa, and then vacate it when Her Incomparableness requires it. Once She has settled, I then have to cover Her with the fuzzy blanket.
It may be 22 days until the equinox which marks the first day of astrological autumn, but meteorological autumn begins on September 1. Happy first day of fall, everybody! It got really chilly this evening, so I had to dig out the fuzzy blanket!
It feels very autumnal here in East Anglia. A very decided nip in the air in the evenings and the mornings at the moment. The Small Bear and I love autumn.
My daughter and I can relate! She got my very fair (Swedish/Scottish/English) skin and fine curly hair. Last weekend we drove out to Eastern Long Island. We were in and out all day – never out in the sun for more than 45 minutes at a time – and even with SPF 50+ sunscreen that we put on in the morning, still ended up with the very beginnings of a sunburn on our cheeks and shoulders.
Oh my Cat! I have never related so hard to a chart in my life. Georgia has truly out-Dunn herself on this one. And I am 100% with The Woman; BRING ON AUTUMN!!!
Today, September 1, is the first day of meteorological fall. May that cheer the woman and kitties! Changing leaves and a log on the fire is getting close.
Oh my cat, I am very much like the Woman in my choice of seasons. Of the 4 Seasons, Fall and Winter are by far my favorites, with Winter edging out Fall in the tie breaking round. For me, Summer is:
*Sweating all the time.
*Sun burn (skin cancer in the family).
*Really sweating all the time.
*Sticky, ugly, paper curling up humidity.
*Bugs the size of small appliances because they never die out.
*Having to cut grass every 5-7 days.
*Did I mention sweating ALL THE TIME!
I love watching snow come down. I love a fire in the fireplace. I like a cold bedroom and a thick blanket to sleep in. I like the way the cats share their heat with you in the winter. I like cooking and winter lends itself to wanting to cook.
So you see, I was not meant to be sweating in St. Louis. I am suppose to be ‘chillin’ in New England – preferably where they get lots of snow, lots of grey days and lots of rolling hills and woods.
Today is the last day of one of our local fairs, with the “best” fair around the corner here in Vermont. Definitely the end of summer. I am not looking forward to the cooler temps – I barely got myself warmed up! I’m one of those strange ones who love the heat. I have to go outside to recharge my inner thermostat. At work (in that dreaded air conditioning) I have to wear gloves, have a heated fuzzy blanket and go run my hands under hot water to continue working. Definitely not looking forward to the cooler temps. My 4 boys do their best to help keep me warm – taking turns being my heavy blanket.
The summer used to bother me more than the winter (I really only like the spring and fall), but now my partner wants the house heated to 80° in the winter, but he lets me cool it to 72° in the summer, so that’s more comfortable for me than the winter by far. (It’s not reasonable, but he has bizarre temperature reactions from chemo, so he gets a pass. And by ‘gets a pass’ I mean he has to listen to me constantly complain about it while he does what he wants.)
The Mrs is a ginger from Scotland. The girls are gingers as well. They sympathize with you, Georgia. They don’t get sun-tanned, they get sunstroke. And don’t talk about the hair. Just don’t.
The first sign of fall I saw here was about a week ago on my walk. At the local library around the pond there is one tree that was all deep green… except for ONE entire branch that had gone fire-red. The one branch apparently decided “IT’S AUTUMN!” without consulting the rest of the tree or any of its neighbors. The others are now beginning to follow suit, but only slowly.
I love the fall! The crisp air and turning leaves are my favorite time of year. And the dying off of the insects, that think I’m a Happy Meal, is a bonus!
I had my first fall sighting of pumpkin spice at Food Lion on Friday. Pumpkin spice Krispy Kreme donuts. Not a fan of pumpkin spice except in homemade dessert breads. Sadly, they are no longer a tradition here at home because of health reasons and family diet restrictions.
I also burn. Just got done with chemo cream for skin cancer. And boy did my skin react to the cream. Hopefully I won’t develop any basal cell carcinomas any time soon (and if you’re going to get skin cancer, this is the one you want). I’ve had so many removed from me (between 15-20) that the dermatologist and I decided to use the cream (this is the 2nd time, first time was several years ago, total 6 weeks and I divided my skin into like 3 sections, 2 weeks each). After 12 weeks, it’s time to finally heal. Even though it was a cream and not the traditional chemo, it still takes a lot out of you. I was born and raised in CA (got burned between 3-5 times) and now currently live in FL. I did spend 15 years in NE and I really do miss having a fall. When it actually gets cool. Not here, it stays pretty warm until, maybe December/January. Then it starts warming again. There is no true “fall” here.
Totally agree! Winter is my favorite also. Love the snow, the deeper the better. I have this little red shovel that I love. I tell myself I’ll just do a path to the garage and the front porch to make it easier for my husband and his snowblower, later I’m 3/4 of the way done with all that and the driveway. I look up and standing in the doorway drinking a cup of coffee in his robe is my husband saying: “you know, we have this thing called a snowblower?” But the noise pollutes the peace and quiet of the snow blanketing us. Love to skate and cross country ski. I’ve been known to do that in the street before it gets plowed. That all said, I’m still a snow worshiper and like nothing better then laying out in the snow reading a good book!
I’m with Kit’n’Kaboodle – fine, thin, stick-straight hair (I was the envy of many in the 60’s when my friends were all ironing their hair), that doesn’t stay in a pony tail, can’t hold even a perm curl for more than a couple of days (80’s, arrgh); but fortunately can be cut short enough to be insulating in the winter. Heat? If all of me is in it – a burn with heatstroke; in the car – my left arm gets enough freckles that it looks like a tan.
But happiness is a house that has amazing insulation and whole house A/C with ceiling fans. Downside is that it’s in Northern CA (just missed being part of the Camp Fire last year)…
Don’t forget to turn your BCN calendar page. September features the 3:00 AM running of the cats complete with Buzzy & Elvis wearing sweat bands and Tommy giving high scores from the window!
I also have that white paper Irish skin. In NY I lived for the Summer, hated Winter. Now I live in Florida and it’s the opposite, I hate Summer, but love Winter. I also loved Autumn in both places.
Autumn and winter are my favorites. I love the fall colors and the excitement of Halloween, Thanksgiving and then the Christmas holiday season, including New Year Eve. It’s exciting to anticipate the new year. And the silence of the snow in winter is awesome. However, when May comes along and Nature is wearing their new spring outfits and the birds are singing their hearts out, that’s awesome too. Summer, what can I say about summer…the hummingbirds, the butterflies, squirrels, chipmunks, bears [tearing down fences] and deer, well another season to enjoy.
Yes, Pumpkin Spice candles, preferably Yankee Candle Spiced Pumpkin, are a must. Burn them year round, not just in the fall. Quite a few fragances I’d add to that list. None of them floral or perfumy.
As for fuzzy blankets, I’m surprised the past couple weeks haven’t seen a frost in the morning. But that’s just how it feels since it’s getting down in the upper to mid fifties. Still, putting layers on the bed at night. Of course I actually should turn off the fan, but nows the time to really start getting ready for the coming cold and climatizing myself to it. So fuzzy blankets at night just feel so good.
summer equals sunburn, heat exhaustion, bugs, allergies… I itch, burn sweat and feel like I’m going to fall out for about four months. I Love autumn! (irish and prone to hot flashes, ugh)
I would be hard put to choose a favorite season, but winter is not it. I do not look forward to cold, snow. icy streets and sidewalk. snow, no color except grey, white and black, snow, short days with not much sunshine, snow and snow. Did I mention snow?
I went grocery shopping this afternoon and found the first of the season Entenmann’s pumpkin mini muffins! The seasons, they are a changin’. I did give a pass to the white chocolate pumpkin spice M&Ms. White chocolate is NOT chocolate! Now pumpkin spice added to hazelnut butter and covered with a hard candy shell, I might consider!

Here is one from way back: To Each His Own by the Ink Spots
The sun has its glow, in winter it will snow
And autumn and spring can be lovely, too
To each his own,
To each his own,
With my cats life is all new!
…….
(Puck) What good is a chart, with no pumpkin-spiced heart?
(Elvis) And we need a blanket, all the same.
(Lupin) To each his own, I found my own!
In a pumpkin spiced candle flame!
…….
If a flame is aglow, I must chase it, you know
A chart must be enlightening
A blanket must warm, there can be no harm
And a song we know we all can sing.
…….
Summer, spring, winter, fall,
There’s a season for all,
The Orb is there to see us through,
To each, his own, with love it’s known,
No matter what we’re there for you!
