Well, it’s settled. Tom doesn’t know he is being trapped. Ann waited until she had a ring on her finger before announcing pregnancy and Tom doesn’t even suspect the timing. It appears Tiff has no plans to tell dad otherwise. Wondering if Les will?
There’s something off in Ann’s face in the last panel. No triumph, no joy, just a rather forced, sickly smile that doesn’t quite succeed even in being a smile. I think something has gone wrong with her plan.
I admit I’m no expert, but if a fetus is that far along in development shouldn’t the mother show some signs of being pregnant? Ann looks the same as ever.
To me it is clear what happened, as some called yesterday. I think Rhetorical Question but there were a few others I think. Misdirection personified. The ultrasound is that of a baby being carried to term by a surrogate. That answers to question of why Ann is not showing and the reaction of her and William Powell looking like Tom (well I think he looks like William Powell) shows they clearly had planned this. And must I remind my fellow old farts it takes two to tango, even if they use fertility clinics. Tom is happy with the evil queen, and zounds she seems happy with him. Of course Tiffany seeing this, is unhappy, and is prepared to leave, or is she? Lots more to come, but I think there are a lot of unclear assumptions here. Worst case: Tom DID have the procedure and Ann is cheating on him. The million dollar question is: who did Ann have sex with?
This is Tiffany’s cue to put her neglectful father and his sleazy girlfriend in the rear view mirror and go find some decent unselfish people to hang with.
First ultrasound is usually done at 8 weeks. Add to this the time for setting the ‘image’ up behind the frame and to go on those vacations, and she should have been showing for some time already. So…
It “appears” like we are having a baby says the lady. Strange word choice, makes me wonder if this is a fake and part of the money grabbing scheme she is playing and Tiff inadvertently moved up her game plan or is Ann a couple chess moves ahead and somehow knew young angry Tiff would nose around and find the picture (or perhaps other ultrasound pictures Ann carefully hid for Tiff to find), after all Eiffel is diabolical and this is not her first rodeo……
And now, the battle begins (for Tom anyway). Who will he pick? Or will he try to work out a deal with both? I’m with Tiff… Say goodbye and move on. You can do so much better if you shake off that burden.
I agree with another poster…Ann will probably fall down the staircase, miscarry and end up in the hospital. Tiffany will end up taking care of her and Ann will “change her ways”. OK, well, maybe not that last part.
I’ll still be the contrarian and say Tiff is not leaving the house… YET!
Tom Ferrell has been given a face for a reason. A face with specific recognizable characteristics. To me, this means GnK plan for the Tom, Ann, Tiffany and baby(?) arc to continue into the future. It would be too stilted to have much dialogue with “daddy/hubby Tom” only showing the expressionless back of his head .
Tom’s reaction today indicates that he has known pregnancy was within the realm of possibilities and has accepted it as fact. So far there has been no indication that this was anything more that a pleasant surprise for Tom.
Will Anne continue as the iconic “evil stepmother?” She still hasn’t had time to react to Tiffany’s “snooping” and ruining her “surprise announcement behind the picture” scheme. Not to mention her clothes being thrown out the second story window!
So far it appears the Cinderella story believers hold sway. I.e., more humiliation for Tiffany.
I still don’t believe Ann is pregnant Tiffany get the hell away from Ann she is smarter than you and will make you look like a fool in front of your father
Yep. She dug up her old ultrasound from when she was pregnant with Les and set it up in an envelope reading, “For my Darling Tom”. She didn’t give it to him because she thought he would propose on that trip….which he DID. She probably would have gotten rid of that envelope, but…having being discovered, now has to play out this farce. Of course, as everyone is saying, a miscarriage will happen after a quickie wedding.
Well, there goes the theory some have mentioned about Tom having had a vacectomy. That wouldn’t have been his reaction if that were the case. Now the only thing that’s left is Ann’s treatment of Tiffany, and Tom’s been pretty blind to that until now. Maybe this isn’t leading up to a breakup between Tom and Ann, but to Tiffany leaving permenantly and becoming independent of her father.
Careful Tiff. Being a nanny almost certainly pays better than The Fuse. And you aren’t on a strong carrer track at college. I will never understand the economics of Pittsville.
That’s it! My thoughts, exactly. Ann said, “It seems we are having a baby.” She is not showing enough to have a sonogram with that detail. ThiS is a set up.
as for that pregnancy too far along… possible they had talked about adoption (both wanting a child for many of the reasons stated above) and that is the ultrasound from the expectant mother they may be helping? Though, with money “tight” as Ann had said, I really doubt it but just musing about that far-along timing
Tiffany was right. With Ann Tom looks sincerely happy♡. And the worst part is that even Ann, with Tom, looks sincerely (I know, I’m talking about Ann, the con artist who live behind thousand of lies, but maybe, MAYBE, this time she’s sincere) happy♡♡!!! Is it time for the elder daughter to leave the house or the father will want her to be part of the new family?
1) Ultrasounds these days usually have “metadata” on the edges of the image identifying the patient receiving the ultrasound. Usually the mother’s name (at least the last name) is clearly visible.
2) That ultrasound baby is pretty well developed.Arms, hands, Fingers, Feet and Toes are formed in the 3rd month. Unless Tom is spending very little time with his GF, he should have noticed various signs (Morning sickness etc), Ann would also be “visibly pregnant” – i.e. those slender pants would not be comfortable.
Sheesh! Say it isn’t so! Ann must have had multiple photos made. What a gem of a Dad! /s. Where to now, Tiff? Back to the Fuse? That place is more like home than this cold, uncaring palace.
1) I think We can FINALLY put the (cringe) vasectomy theory to rest.
2) This is the SECOND time Tiffany has had a “list” in her hands (this time the chore list) that could have but Ann in “check,” but she didn’t use it.
3) “Go?” WHERE does Tiffany go? She said the dorms are closed, least for her. That means that Tiff either stays at home (she SHOULD) or seeks lodging at the Gulag or the DeGroots. I still say she’ll try the Gulag first.
4) This idea that THIS pregnancy is fake. This has got to be the riskiest scams of all times. If Ann is “pregnant,” she’ll have to make frequent trips to a doctor. Or at least pretend to make trips to a doctor. It ain’t likely that Ann is going to want Tom along with her on these trips fearing he’d find out the truth. And Ann is in good health, so it ain’t likely that she’ll need to see a doctor on regular basis, and pretend she’s going to an OB/GYN. (It would be nice if Tiffany would follow her on one of these trips, and find out where she REALLY goes) So, “IF” this is pregnancy is fake, Ann is going to have to “miscarry” and “miscarry” QUICK before she starts showing.
5) What if this is for real, and everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY has to deal with it? Perhaps We SHOULD all prepare.
One more thing. Tiffany should stick around and at least hear what Tom’s “big news” is before storming out. It might be something she wants to hear. ;)
The fact is that Tom NEVER loved Tiff or he would not have let Ann control him and push Tiff into the background. Tom is not capable of true love because no self-respecting father would EVER let anyone push his daughter into the background.Greg? You screwed up BIG time on this arc. Time to dump it like you do all others.
I feel so bad for Tiffany. All she wants is a close family and the love and support. Tom really needs to have a good conversation with his daughter and the many others that Anne has made life miserable for. Needs a good ol’ intervention.
Well, I was sure wrong in my previous assumption. But between yesterday’s episode and today’s, it seems that Tom is just a self-centered as Tiff had been, and is perfectly happy with his daughter being his mistress’s housekeeper. Sad situation. I don’t know … I’ve been reading Luann for years, maybe this cruel kick in the teeth to Tiff is a signal to find a new daily comic to have with my coffee. I guess I’ll see what the rest of this week brings, then decide.
So since the proposal came before the ultrasound it was no trap? Will there be more to this story? This was anti-climatic except for Tiffany now knowing her Dad seems to love Ann
In a more normal family where a child is raised with love and guidance, when that kid turns 18 he/she would have sufficient self esteem so as not to feel displaced if their mom or dad chose to have another child. They would be happy and excited and would want to help out where possible. But Tiff does not have that level of confidence or self esteem. So she feels like she is being replaced and the implication is that Tom can only care about one person at a time. While Tiff needs to get her own life, we can hope that by the end of the week, Tom will let Tiff know that he cares about her just as much as he cares for Ann and the new baby.
Well, that glimmer of hope didn’t last long. One more crooked tongue phrase from Annie Awful and Howard “Tom Farrell” Hughes is again all twisted around her pinkie. Tiffany is probably wise to get out while she can.
Part of growing up is leaving home and I guess Tiffany finally gets that now. I’m sorry it’s happening this way; Tom sort of deserves Ann but Tiffany deserves better.
Man, I thought Tiffany would answer dad about dusting by saying Ann gave me chores and then finally be able to unload how awful Ann is to her!! I agree that ultrasound is showing a rather big baby for a skinny Ann! The plot thickens!
I think its time to admit that G&K have dropped the ball here. This IS simply bad story telling bad story telling. It was time to end the multi-year winning streak that Ann was on, it was the perfect moment, considering how the comments numbers have spiked, they had the audience invested and then they just dropped the football at the goal line like they were players for the Detroit Lions. There was almost an audible pffffffttttttt as the air went out of this balloon.
I truly don’t think they know how to end this arc, or they are afraid to. Handing Ann a final, definitive, loss would remove a major story line that has been an undercurrent of the strip for the last couple years. It is very possible that they don’t know where to go after that. Unfortunately for them an audiences emotional reservoir is finite, and if they don’t give her that defeat people will stop caring. Based on the comments here, it seems that many already have.
G&K built up anticipation for her fall, set up a circumstance for an epic defeat and even hinted to a big change by showing the face of Tiff’s paternal unit…today was the day. Then they blew it. If tomorrow Tiffany turns around and somehow Ann is beaten by Friday, the moment is already lost. It would be like like a man saying “And another thing…” twenty minutes after admitting he’s lost the argument.
As I said before, just horrible story telling going on here. This on par with the book, The Moon People.
Well, I still have hope that everything belongs to Tiffany as it was left to her by her Mom… I don’t think Ann wants to live in a normal house without maids
Tommorrow…Tiffany will be at Les/Gunther’s house. She will be telling Les everything that happened. Mr. Gray walks in for a visit….by Saturday we will hear him say “Ann can’t have any more children”. Oh no – Ann is busted.
Once again, Tiff takes the high ground. Her character has grown up more than is even non-humanly possible in such a short time. Note that directly or indirectly, her dad has almost entirely cut her off, and not only financially. But she clearly loves him anyway. Somewhere down there, you can see that he cares about her, too, but as is his wont, most everything else is more important. She’s a cartoon character, yet I feel for her!Ann’s wording is interesting…”it appears that”…maybe this is her twisted way of introducing the subject of Les, and Tiff inadvertently took it in another direction.
Things seem to be progressing much as I had anticipated. A few additional thoughts:
1. Many folks keep suggesting Ann should be “showing” because the baby is “so big”. As a professor who teaches classes in development (embryology)…. I can assure you that a fetus as developed as is shown could easily be at a size of about 1 inch in length. The body morphology and the systems of the body are set into development very early.
2. Tom calls the baby “he”…. and potentially if he is good a reading sonograms and the fetus is beyond 10 weeks gestation, he may be able to detect the reproductive architecture of the male anatomy (that is still pretty early to definitively know, but an expert could potentially identify the sex by that gestation time). But, more likely than not, his “he” comment is just Tom’s suggestion of the sex he may be “hoping” for.
3. Tom seems genuinely happy about the news… so this suggests to me that he and Ann have had a positive discussion about that as a potential.
4. Not really sure how to “read” Tiffany in the last panel. She seems “hurt”, but at the same time, she had been previously moving to the idea of “Dad is happy with Ann.” so her sadness will hopefully be somewhat limited and temporary…. for her sake. I hope she does not spiral further downward emotionally.
5. Ann has seemed to gain back control of the situation, rather well…. in fact. Even though I generally do not like her or her character… I can say she does have a lot of skill in this regard.
6. Tom’s positive reaction…. again paints him in a slightly better light…. he does seem to care (in his own way) about this new baby…. and in that same vein yesterday and the day before showed he does care (in his own way) about Tiffany. Is his level of “care” sufficient? No. His track record with Tiffany has been weak, and I would suspect he will be pretty much the same with this kid as well. But, I do think we now have evidence that he cares.
Question. If the sonogram was supposed to be a surprise, 1. when was she going to present this envelope to Tom? and b. why “hide” it taped to the back of a frame? I wonder what twist Greg will have in store for us?
You know, Greg got rid of some really good characters like Quill, Delta, and a bunch of others—why are we still having to deal with Ann and her sneaky ways..? I love this comic but continuing to see folks in it being bambuzzled by Ann is getting old….hopefully this will lead to Tom FINALLY opening his eyes to her schemes (since he IS supposed to be a BIG-TIME/SMART lawyer) and she will exit stage left like so many others have done! Come on Greg…The comic is named LUANN—not ANN!!! Just my 2 cents!
It may have been said, but I can’t devote the time to reading all 411 comments. I did skim the first few and this wasn’t noted. It is not an early pregnancy because of the size. That has to be a 6 month old fetus if a day, getting to the stage where it adds weight at a fantastic rate. My supervisor brought in the first ultrasound of his child which was done at the first doctor’s appointment. We looked amazed, and soon were referring to the fetus as ‘Lima Bean’ because that’s what it looked like, right down to the size. (Hi! How are your wife and Lima Bean doing today?) Looking at the sonogram, Ann’s figure and the tightness of her pants, particularly the belt buckle’s tightness, she is not pregnant.
We could be seeing the beginning of the spiral toward a suicide. Tiffany is clearly depressed, failing school, not fully recovered from her weight gain, a father who has basically tossed her to the curb, a dead-end server job, etc., etc., etc.
Sadly, this is the truth for Tiffany. I do applaud her maturity and her simple ‘and I will say goodbye’ as she walks out of the panel. I think Tiffany finally hit her rock bottom. Her father is finally happy and with a new baby on the way and Tiffany finally realizes that Tom wasn’t the daddy she wanted or the one that she deserved. And yes, sometimes the Anns in the world do win. The real question is, what will Tiffany do now. There is nothing left for Tiffany where she is at now.
Why isn’t Tom asking follow up questions? Maybe we’re not going to see that yet? I guess we have to wait as the plot sickens, I mean thickens. (Something I used say about plot developments on soap operas. I did watch them with my mother many years ago on occasion. Not ashamed of it, but don’t miss them.)
Well, I see our hopes for Ann to get her comeuppance have been dashed. And yes, Tiffany, you might as well say goodbye. Time of leave the lovebirds to revel in their happiness while you get ignored, again. Oh Tiffany, how much more can you take before this ends up being a suicide scenario? I no longer hope for Ann to have a mysterious “miscarriage.” Ann’s got her claws into Tom Farrell, and Tiffany might as well kiss her father, and her inheritance, goodbye.
Sooo…he asked her to marry him BEFORE finding out about the baby. So is this the cartoonist way of saying they are legit in love? Oh gag! Still not happy with Ann being happy. I’m not the writer though. There are a lot of ways this can go. Wonder if “good” Ann will go about trying to right all of her wrongs. I may be jumping the gun a bit or totally off base. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
I’m not a long time reader here, but I have to wonder if the number of comments today is partly due to those who used to post at ArcaMax moving here to avoid having to use the new Fakebook requirement…
I would just like to see Ann toppled off her throne. It’s about time a scammer gets her comeuppance. For once, let a baddy get their due. Tiffany deserves to have her father back in her life. If Tom loves Tiffany as he “almost” showed her, then maybe it’s time for him to focus on her. Please, Please, let Ann be exposed!
Well, it’s official now… Tom is now part of Ann’s family, and there’s no room in Ann’s family for Tiffany. She needs to get out now, and not look back. Ann has Tom’s complete attention, and has no intention whatsoever of sharing him with his own daughter.
At least Tiffany still has her job at The Fuse. She can work full-time at The Fuse during the rest of the summer, and put money aside towards a nice, small apartment. And since Ann is no longer welcome at The Fuse, she’ll be relatively safe there.
Since the business courses were too much for her, she should probably take a year off from college to focus on what she can do. She could get a part-time job at a hair salon/spa. On-the-job training can be beneficial, especially since this is her area of expertise. The spa can recommend the right kind of beauty school for her to enroll in, where she can become a star pupil.
If she focuses more on her future in cosmetology, and less on her father and the mistake he’s making with Ann, Tiffany can still make TiffasNails a reality.
As for Tom Farrell… Well, some people need to learn the hard way…
Wait till Tom starts tightening the belt to save up for the new kid. Ann won’t like that. Tom may take this as the motivation to finally get a vasectomy to prevent any future financial burdens (i.e. children). If it turns out she was just using her first son’s ultrasound, that’d cut off any chances to get pregnant for real. I bet Tiffany starts describing the ultrasound to Les and he realizes Ann is using his image.

Maybe this isn’t leading up to a breakup between Tom and Ann, but to Tiffany leaving permenantly and becoming independent of her father.

as for that pregnancy too far along… possible they had talked about adoption (both wanting a child for many of the reasons stated above) and that is the ultrasound from the expectant mother they may be helping? Though, with money “tight” as Ann had said, I really doubt it but just musing about that far-along timing

Tiffany was right. With Ann Tom looks sincerely happy♡. And the worst part is that even Ann, with Tom, looks sincerely (I know, I’m talking about Ann, the con artist who live behind thousand of lies, but maybe, MAYBE, this time she’s sincere) happy♡♡!!! Is it time for the elder daughter to leave the house or the father will want her to be part of the new family?

Anyone else think that it’s interesting the way she worded the announcement? …“It appears we’re having a baby”…
TheElderGodfather over 4 years ago
Thoughts that occur to me:

I guess since there’s no way of getting through to her father, I guess Tiffany’s only option is to cut her father out of her life…for good.
Mordock999 Premium Member over 4 years ago
Okay a couple of things.
It might be something she wants to hear. ;)jamescordeiro over 4 years ago

RSH over 4 years ago
In a more normal family where a child is raised with love and guidance, when that kid turns 18 he/she would have sufficient self esteem so as not to feel displaced if their mom or dad chose to have another child. They would be happy and excited and would want to help out where possible. But Tiff does not have that level of confidence or self esteem. So she feels like she is being replaced and the implication is that Tom can only care about one person at a time. While Tiff needs to get her own life, we can hope that by the end of the week, Tom will let Tiff know that he cares about her just as much as he cares for Ann and the new baby.

Dragoncat over 4 years ago
