That’s not heartbreaking that’s just stupid. Tiffany gambled only to find her father mindlessly in love. There’s no where else to go, she is flunking out of college. The Fuse and a room at the Degroot’s is her only future.
Tom is still not presented as shocked to the core by this turn of events. I still think he will read this as Ann loving him so much she would try trickery to seal his love with a marriage proposal.
Let’s face it. That has been his posture in all dealings between Ann and Tiff. Why would we expect something different now?
His heart is broken because he thinks Tiffany will do anything to destroy Ann in his eyes. Even create a fake picture. I think he would rather send Tiffany away than believe that his Ann would lie. I guess this is when Tom tells Tiffany to leaves unless she can appreciate all Ann has done for her. He seems the type to throw away the old for the shiny new one. He’ll say that he has done all he could and now she will have to stand on her own since she couldn’t get along with Ann.
I actually feel bad for Tom. Yes, he’s shown to not be the world’s greatest father, but he loved Ann, and he thought she loved him. It’s horrible thinking that someone loves you like you love them, when they don’t feel the same or are using you. Maybe Tom can use this experience to form a better bond with Tiffany.
Frankly I don’t know what is MORE “heartbreaking.” Tom’s STUPIDITY or the fact it looks like Life is going to continue to GRIND Tiffany up like so much hamburger.
I was going to say something like “Hey, Now I know where Tiffany gets her “smarts” from,” but THAT would be UNFAIR Tiffany.
Looks like We’ve reached a point where only MIRACLE can save Tiffany now. Maybe a fortuitous phone call saying Ann just bought the farm in a traffic accident?
Anyway, in the meantime, Nancy? Is that spare room still available? Just in case. ;)
Tiffany has only one option now. Exit stage right and avoid this “made for TV” horror show. Leave those twisted birds to each other, and send them bad wishes on her way out.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Ann also fabricated the story about Tom’s financial problems that resulted in Tiffany’s spending being cut off and forcing her out of her private dorm suite? What if Tom thinks his daughter is still being provided for “in the manner to which she is accustomed” and Ann pockets the difference?
We’ll I am afraid I won the bet that Tom would, apparently, feel sympathetic to Ann, even when his daughter presents him with evidence meeting a reasonable doubt of Ann’s perfidy, thereby throwing his daughter under the bus. This arc still has a way to go, but where is Tiffany going to go given this turn of events is entirely in the dark imagination of the creators. It’s the top comic in my home town paper though.
He’s heartbroken for poor widdle Annie who doesn’t believe she’s lovable enough to win her man without resorting to trickery. He’ll jump to reassure her that he loves her for herself and she’ll gloat and turned meaner than ever. Ugh.
Reading thru the comments, some hinted at it, but could the ‘heartbreaking ’ part of this be that Tom is disappointed in Tiffany for providing this information and now Tom is going to tell Tiffany to leave and for her to stay out of his and Ann’s life.
[revised] Heartbreaking to know that Ann is so desperately in love with him? Heartbreaking to know that Ann is so desperately in love with his money? Heartbreaking that he’s not about to have another child? Heartbreaking that his daughter would invent such a lie about his fiancée? Heartbreaking to realize that while he’s talking with Tiffany, he’s missing the first inning of the game?
How many commenters will be certain that the correct interpretation is obvious, but not all agree on what it is?
And meanwhile, it’s time for a look in on … Brad, Toni, and Shannon? Gunther and Bets? Luann and Jack? Knute and Crystal? Fay and Axel? Bernice and …?
Tom did not say he didn’t believe Tiff outright? He forgot to read his script!! I’m sure he was supposed to say “Come on, Tiffany. You’re the one who’s desperate. You are jealous and want to keep us apart. There is no Leslie Knox. Ann would have mentioned him. These two are just a copy and an original which proves nothing.” Cue to Ann outside the room eavesdropping and smiling. Well, he’s heartbroken. It’s strange some folks in here thinks it means Ann wins? What does that mean?
Tom’s heart is probably breaking for Evil Annie as he’s probably thinking that she would have to resort to a measure such as this to be loved and wanted. I know it sounds twisted, but when it comes to Evil Annie, Tom’s mind is not working properly.
Now a surprise ending could be Ann entering the room and saying Tiffany has fabricated the story (with Tom in agreement as he may already be) and Tiffany saying OK, Les, time for your entrance. Les comes in and says “Hi mom”, thanks for making a copy of that sonogram for me and, BTW, the police should be here shortly as I made a copy of the Souffle customer list and informed those ladies you conned out of their money, who called the police plus the Souffle people who are also pressing charge. And Ann takes off like a bat out of hell", leaving Tom sitting their with his mouth wide open (trying to extract both feet). Of course, this will never happen. :)
Well, he’s going to have to call off the engagement for sure. The question that’s left is what’s to become of Ann? In a perfect world he’ll have her committed, because she’s clearly obsessive and delusional and should be locked up to protect her as well as the rest of society.
If she deserves anything at all out of this, I’d limit it to a spinoff comic of her own.
Will the idiot leave her or not? He’s such a vague character. Not well developed. I guess that’s one way to build up suspense—with a very half-backed plot.
I honestly believed Tom was still going to be stupid about this, but he accepted it?? Color me surprised. I feel bad for the guy. I’ve been single and alone for over 6 years, so I know how it’d feel to finally find love only to realize it was never there. Ann is a natural manipulator, so I know she’s going to fight this, I just hope Tom can keep his eyes open. It’s going to be so easy to believe her lies when you don’t WANT to believe them.
I have to stop reading this comic. There is enough Evil in the world nowadays. I read the comics to get away from it. I want to laugh, not be brought down by another Evil, lying person getting away with their con. Now if he realizes what she is and dumps her, I would be happy!
My first reaction to this strip today was, “Oh, COME ON! YOU STUPID @#$%^&!!!!!!!” Now that I took a sip of coffee, I read the comments and I am hoping beyond hope that Tom finds this heartbreaking ONLY because he was excited to be a father again. PLEASE (Evanses), do NOT make him sympathetic to ANN. This is so devious….I have no words.
“Wedding bells will be ringing for Tom and his gal”“Les will walk his mother down the aisle”“Everyone but Tiffany will be celebrating for at least for at least awhile”“Cause Tiffany’s hoping they won’t be eloping”“Mister Grey know Ann’s divorce never became final”“And Mister Grey will be at the wedding to save the day”.
Tom’s marrying Ann would be a big win for Ann and Ann could afford to support Les financially, a big win for Les, if only to irritate Tiffany, another win for Ann. Yeah, yeah, I know life’s not a competition but so far, other than pissing Ann off over that fake lingerie, Tiffany’s batting zero against Ann. Plus Tiffany probably gave Ann a subpar foot rub. So Mister Grey, or SOMEONE better ride to the rescue, because Tiffany ain’t gettin it done by herself.
Short of Ann committing bigamy I don’t see love smitten Tom calling off the wedding. “Amore omnia vincit”, “love conquers all” (okay my Latin ain’t perfect)
I’m not as convinced this is a win for ann as the rest of you are. I think there is a lot of Stockholm syndrome going on where you’re so convinced that Ann can’t lose that you’ll interpret anything in her favor.
Shocker! Like Others, I knew this was coming! And I for one am not very entertained by it anymore. Can’t imagine not having this as my first strip of the day to read, been a fan for so long, but not sure how much more I can take! Ugh it’s too predictable not to mention aggravating! Ok rant over!
What happened to Tiff’s mother???? Deserted, divorced, disappeared, died? Is this a pattern with Tom? Why hadn’t he been snapped up by some other woman since Tiff’s mother? Where is this guy’s psychology?
Time for a prenuptial agreement, Tom does not know of Ann’s evil ways, he may still keep her as his girlfriend. Ann maybe very good in bed.At least Tiffany didn’t accuse Ann to her face, so she would have time to create a new tale
Well, this is saturday, and heartbreaking is a good choice of word for a cliffhanger since, as many here have said, it can mean many different things.
Tom heartbroken because Ann has been deceiving him, heartbroken because Tiffany is ready to throw dirt on the woman he loves, heartbroken because poor Ann wanted to marry him so much she felt she needed a backup plan whereas it was obviously unnecessary since he proposed first…
No resolution yet, but that’s the game with a daily comic. You got to milk it for all it’s worth.
If this goes the wrong way I may leave. Some of you will be ecstatic. Some will not be able to call me a Nazi leftist which is absurd. Nazis are fascists. One newcomer who has trolled me will have the last laugh and get to troll the rest of you instead a win-win for everyone actually. hmmm food for thought said the accused ‘narcissist’.
Hmmm, don’t think that was any proposed response! On one hand, it’s nice he seems sensitive, but then, I don’t believe he’s aware of Ann’s treatment of Tiff. How can he be so sympathetic toward Ann, but not his daughter? Looks like Ann wins and, unless she has an “enlightened” moment, will continue her behavior toward Tiffany. This looks like a good place to change arcs.
Heartbreaking is so ambiguous.1. Hb because Ann lied to him? Not likely.2. Hb because Tiff is trying to break them up? Possibly.3. Hb because Ann is so insecure in his love for her she tried to trick him? Probably what he means.4. Hb because Tom is so desperate he’s engaged to someone he doesn’t really know. True.
Well, once again the heel of Tom’s boot right in Tiffany’s teeth. I’m actually not surprised. Tom will cater to Ann’s so-called “feelings”, and let his own daughter know she can go to he**.
shame on Greg Evans, he is having a father choose a women over his child, i’ve seen this happen in real life, it’s neither ok or funny; please end this story line already
Tiffany should have been done with this S-show long ago. Leave daddy dearest to his fate the gold digger and go figure out what to do with your own life. Buckle down at school, lean on your friends for help with your studies…hit up your fashion contacts for paid internships. I mean, she isn’t brainless. She’s just refusing to believe her cushy old life is gone. Once Tom started thinking with the little head, it was all over. Tiffany should have been concentrating on how to save herself not him.
Not to mention, a couple of tough years that she successfully pulls through might be the very thing to finish turning Tiff into a decent human being. Let’s face it, she’s spent most of her life as a slightly less evil Ann-Eiffel-in-Training.
Eiffel let’s either see her broken willed and sincerely repenting or out of the comic and not with out Tom either. Please – the world needs to see good conquer evil.
There is a difference between unconditional love and that which was once termed “love is blind”. We are seeing an example of it right here. Sad for Tiff.
I hope Tom realizes that Tiff coming to him privately about this—not in a big confrontation with Ann—shows that she understands how much this revelation is going to hurt. And I hope he doesn’t break her heart by choosing to believe Ann. Tiff’s had it rough for a while now—time for her to have things go HER way for once.
First of all, I am WAY to invested in this, I’ll admit : ) But I think the plot will go, Tom: " oh my poor darling Ann! She wants my child so badly that she has resorted to this. I will spend thousands of dollars to make her baby dream come true and meanwhile lavish gifts upon my poor deluded Ann."
He feels pity for Ann for going to these lengths to get him to marry her. Game over Tiffany. Your dad is smitten, and facts won’t matter. Move on, let him live his life, and go find yours.
This story could go any possible direction. Tom could side with Ann, side with Tiffany, kick them both out, or who knows. I have a funny feeling that Tiffany is going to really grow up when all is said and done.
Tiff needed to pick her adjectives a little more carefully knowing how her dad feels about Ann. She could have said ‘dishonest’ and ‘deceitful’, both true for the situation at hand, as opposed to horrible and evil. Words matter and she was trying to change Tom’s opinion of Ann (drastically) before he had a chance to decide for himself. Let’s see how this plays out. We have to remember that all of Tiff’s growth, decision to major in business, working at the Fuse etc have all been in response to a desire to get away from Ann and Tom and succeed on her own. If Ann were suddenly removed and Tiff went back to living at home with endless ATM priviledges, all that growth would come to an end. That said Tiff needs to be motivated on her own, not by her hatred of Ann.
It IS heartbreaking to think that someone you love and trust enough to have sex with, go on vacation with, defend against your flesh and blood, ask to marry you, and be excited about starting a family with would be so insecure, devious, and manipulative. Look at what he’s losing (from his perspective): a son, the respect of his daughter, the love and trust of his fiancee, his love and trust in his fiancee, his vision for the future, his reputation with his friends, his sense of his own self-esteem. Heartbreaking is a good word. What we does with that broken heart, we don’t know yet. However, in my experience, allowing yourself to feel and express sadness, despair, hopeless, etc. is VALUABLE. It does NOT mean you can not or will not also feel anger and also advocate for yourself or pursue justice. It means you allow yourself the full range of emotion, which is healthy.
yes to all of what CaLady has said, except that Tom may be thinking it is ‘heartbreaking’ that Ann wants (loves) in him so fiercely that she would go to such lengths to be with him for life.
I feel bad for Tom. He seems to really have affection for Ann, who may not feel the same. And now though his only daughter is bringing up Ann’s treachery, he is stuck thinking Ann could really do this to him. Even Tom deserves happiness; but he is now, if you’ll excuse the cliche, between a rock and a hard place.
In 2 weeks a strip with Tiff talking to Nancy at the DeGroots: “Ann warned me that you might try to break us up, but I hoped you’d get used to her. This is my marriage, Tiffany, so you are no longer welcome in this house.”
Let it go, Tiff!! No matter what you say, do or bring in as evidence, your father will still be 100% convinced the sun shines out of Ann’s … backside. Try to make a nice life for yourself and pray you’re mature enough to prevent yourself from saying “I told you so!” later on.
I think the bottom line is that Tom sees what Ann did as an unnecessary act of desperation and it saddens him (heart broken). But are these emotions that he is feeling so strong that he fails to factor in the dishonest and deceitful nature of her actions? This is what we are left to wonder.
Yeah, it’s heartbreaking, all right. Tom is going to rush to Ann’s side and tell her she didn’t have to resort to subterfuge, he loves her no matter what. And Tiff…well, we all know where that leaves Tiff, don’t we? I know we were all praying Ann would get what’s coming to her, but it sure doesn’t look like that’s what is going to happen. If anybody is heartbroken, it’s us, the readers. Or ex-readers, as the case may be, since I think a whole lot of us will abandon ship.
A possibility I don’t think anyone has mentioned is that Tom thinks it’s heartbreaking because he knows something about Ann that no one else knows – she’s been abused or had other traumatic episodes in her life that have made her behave the way she does.
Tiff isn’t out of the woods yet. Tom is still reeling from the shock and may yet turn against his daughter when Ann gets involved and “explains” the situation. Love makes you do stupid things like believing sweet lies. In the mean time, we probably don’t want to know what Ann has been up to as she probably knows she’s on borrowed time. An ultrasound is generally done about 20 weeks into pregnancy, so there’s no chance she can get pregnant now and still deliver on time. There’s also the possibility that she set up the pregnancy scam and coincidentally got pregnant, but her lies about the ultrasound put her in a difficult situation timing-wise. I suppose it’s also possible her doctor accidentally gave her the wrong ultrasound, but I doubt it.
I wonder if on Monday we’ll find out that he thinks it’s “heartbreaking” because he thinks Tiffany’s jealousy of Ann has driven her to make false accusations against her.
After all, we’ve seen that he will believe Ann over Tiffany every time.
Tom is either an emotional cold fish, or as shrewd and calculating as Ann. His reaction in the final panel does not appear to be one of pain, despite the dialogue bubble. His counter-scheming gears are starting to turn. Tiff’s reaction is the gag, and this definitely keeps the reader hanging on for Monday’s strip.
This is heartbreaking! My only daughter whom I’ve spoilen rotten for twenty years has concocted a deceptive and duplicitous scheme to prevent her loving and gracious father from experiencing blissful matrimony with the most wonderful and most kind-hearted, not to mention sexiest, woman in the world! Out! Be gone at once! I am disinheriting you and moving all my assets into a trust fund for little Tommy. My dear and precious Annie says we are having a boy! She is sacrificing nine months of her life and smoking hot body to carry the son that I have always wanted. Go and obey all dear Annie’s demands if you want to continue to receive a meager allowance. I hate to do this but Greg and Karen say that I must!
On Sunday, we find Nancy telling Frank how much they need to rent their spare bedroom, because otherwise their bank is gonna repo the home they double-mortgaged to buy the Fuse. And on Monday, bright and early, Tiffany is seen moving into the spare room and telling Luann to fetch her luggage and give her a foot rub…
The sociopath presents her/himself as the friend you need—even as it is a false persona. This is the art of seduction—the false promise that will never be fulfilled.
Even if Tom realized that the ultrasound is fake, it is already too late. Do you remember when Tom and Anne went to the cabin? She has probably returned pregnant for real now.

Well, comments seem to be sorting into three categories:
Tom is heartbroken that Ann might have done this to him (fake pregnancy, &c)
Tom is heartbroken that he might not be a father-to-be after all
Tom is heartbroken that Tiffany would go through the effort to make (in his eyes) the claim that Ann’s pregnancy is fake.
Good news: He didn’t “blow up” – not at Tiffany and, thus far, not at Ann.
Bad news: Looks like the groundhog saw its shadow, and we’re in this for the long haul.

Is Tom heartbroken because he isn’t going to be a father again, or, because he’s beginning to see how Ann has been manipulating him?

ACTIVIST1234 over 4 years ago
Heartbreaking is so ambiguous.1. Hb because Ann lied to him? Not likely.2. Hb because Tiff is trying to break them up? Possibly.3. Hb because Ann is so insecure in his love for her she tried to trick him? Probably what he means.4. Hb because Tom is so desperate he’s engaged to someone he doesn’t really know. True.

This story could go any possible direction. Tom could side with Ann, side with Tiffany, kick them both out, or who knows. I have a funny feeling that Tiffany is going to really grow up when all is said and done.
RSH over 4 years ago
That said Tiff needs to be motivated on her own, not by her hatred of Ann.

it’s Heartbreaking because he’s realizing that she didn’t really trust him and felt the need to trap him in this way.
CalLadyQED over 4 years ago

I feel bad for Tom. He seems to really have affection for Ann, who may not feel the same. And now though his only daughter is bringing up Ann’s treachery, he is stuck thinking Ann could really do this to him. Even Tom deserves happiness; but he is now, if you’ll excuse the cliche, between a rock and a hard place.

asrialfeeple over 4 years ago
Let it go, Tiff!! No matter what you say, do or bring in as evidence, your father will still be 100% convinced the sun shines out of Ann’s … backside. Try to make a nice life for yourself and pray you’re mature enough to prevent yourself from saying “I told you so!” later on.
RSH over 4 years ago
I think the bottom line is that Tom sees what Ann did as an unnecessary act of desperation and it saddens him (heart broken). But are these emotions that he is feeling so strong that he fails to factor in the dishonest and deceitful nature of her actions? This is what we are left to wonder.

PhoenixHocking over 4 years ago
Yeah, it’s heartbreaking, all right. Tom is going to rush to Ann’s side and tell her she didn’t have to resort to subterfuge, he loves her no matter what. And Tiff…well, we all know where that leaves Tiff, don’t we? I know we were all praying Ann would get what’s coming to her, but it sure doesn’t look like that’s what is going to happen. If anybody is heartbroken, it’s us, the readers. Or ex-readers, as the case may be, since I think a whole lot of us will abandon ship.
gozar over 4 years ago
A possibility I don’t think anyone has mentioned is that Tom thinks it’s heartbreaking because he knows something about Ann that no one else knows – she’s been abused or had other traumatic episodes in her life that have made her behave the way she does.
lavatube over 4 years ago
