My wife told me that as a kid, she’d eat cat food. And that’s not even the worst of it. Her brother would lick ashtrays. I’m sure my older brothers and sisters remember many gross things I’d eat.
I remember an old joke: A patient went to his doctor and said, “I got a dime in my ear.” The doctor said, “When did that happen?” The guy said, “20 years ago.” The doctor said, “Why are you coming to me now?” The patient said, “I need the money!”
@David Huie Green: Speaking as a veteran of intestinal issues, you can swallow a tooth, cap or crown and most often it will pass through the intestines with no problem. Something as large as a bridge might not, and could eventually cause an obstruction. (The digestive enzymes are set up to work on softer material, so it’s not likely that the bridge was able to break down, esp if there is metal in it.) Just in case, you might want to talk to your dentist about it, and whether you should go to an internist or gastro doc about Xrays. An obstruction is dangerous…
My brother and I, as little kids, ate nickels, pennies, cigarette butts, paper, crayons, clover flowers, dirt, clay, etc.. But we wouldn’t eat any vegetables, and very few foods other than hamburgers, spaghetti, Frosted Flakes and Trix.
I wonder if Bernice really never did/eaten something weird in her childhood or if she just removed it from memories, to preserve her inner image as a superior person.
When I was a baby I swallowed a safety pin…open end first!! My mother had a tense day or so waiting to see if I would have any problems. No problems at all, but my poor mother developed quite a case of OCD about dropping anything on the floor! She was so nervous that I would do it again. As far as maple syrup goes, I use it as a dipping sauce for nearly everything…including breakfast sausage and turkey bacon.
Ouch! That sounds painful! Can a 5-year old really (like, in real life) pass a dime through his/her digestive system and have it safely come out the “chute”? I might be able to see rounder objects with a smaller diameter, but a coin with ridged edges that might turn to the side while passing through (like a tiny buzz saw!) sounds like a major ouch!
Anyone with real experience in the medical field know about this?
I’m really, really hoping that Luann was telling a joke!
What’s crazy is people who do something after seeing someone else hurt by it. I had a friend who told me he once stuck his tongue on a frozen flagpole AFTER he saw someone else run away bleeding from the tongue. Perhaps there is a lesson for non-maskers here.

in due time, the dime five-year-old Luann swallowed made its way to the toilet

Inside Solomon’s ring, it said, “This too shall pass.” Of course that was not referring to such a situation.

Don’t swallow dimes, kids. If the coin lodges in the intestine and causes tearing in the intestinal wall, that’s not a good thing.

I think I swallowed a bridge. I checked for it for a week afterward while contemplating putting it back in my mouth.

Why in the world did she swallow a dime?

Not so gross, but I’d eat Purina Omolene, a livestock feed. It was mostly rolled oats and molasses, and it was delicious. My sisters liked it too.
