While beb01 may not be the most diplomatic poster of them all, he does have a point: All chance to redeem this arc are gone. Dad doing the walrus joke is over the top.

Does this arc continue next week? If so, perhaps it would be a series on how serious sleep apnea is. Or, it could be just another week of cheap jokes at Nancy’s expense. Probably the latter.

Or, we could jump back into Gunther’s kitchen to see what Bets is cooking up.

Or, maybe we could have a visit from the most grown up character in this strip: Shannon!

Myself, I’d hope for a return of Fay and Axel. G&K, are you listening? That was modern Luann’s finest moment in this strip.

Because, if you don’t do something about Luann’s character, it might as well be better to just write her out of the strip.

Heaven knows, you have fascinating characters in the strip.

It’s just that, as currently written, Luann isn’t one of them.

Usually it’s dump on Frank; sometimes it’s dump on Luann; now it’s Nancy. Greg’s old strip had great wit. Now, GnK go for the easy, but weak, joke, and soap opera arcs. Hopefully, GnK will mature.

And thus concludes the most action-packed, drama-filled, character-heavy arc G&K have ever written! And on such a poignant moment too!! When Frank gave that last emotion-packed line with such feeling , why, you’d have to be HEARTLESS not to shed a tear! Well done G&K. Truly your writing has blossomed since that, oh so boring and mundane arc with Ann, with all the grace and poise of a Venus Flytrap. We look forward to the new and creative story that I’m sure you’ll gift us with next.

Lol…I really don’t understand why everyone expects intense drama and meaningful observations and situations here…..this is a COMIC!! It’s meant to be light-hearted, full of jokes, both good and bad, silly situations, and be occasionally thought provoking, but still funny, etc. If you want the former, go watch a soap opera.

What part of the HILARITY ENSUES part of the following do writers here not understandAbout Luann?LUANN is about the trials of becoming a young adult: the hilarity and drama, triumphs and flops, friendships and rivalries. Rich in character and intriguing “what’ll happen next?!” stories, LUANN is a compelling saga of life’s most volatile stage. Well, gosh. And here I was hoping Luann would reveal that she didn’t really use the recording for her class assignment and that her actual essay was a paean of appreciation for her dear, loving, caring, long-suffering, hard-working mother. Then I could have gotten to see the usual gang of bashers using words like “sappy” and “saccharine” and suggesting that the Evanses’ minds must have been taken over by the ghost of some 19th-century writer of “morally instructive” stories for young readers. Or maybe somebody would have remembered that the assignment was to “relate something new you learned today” and I could have thrilled to their comments raking Luann over the coals for not having learned to appreciate Nancy long before now.

And surely there would have been some comments about how neither Luann’s essay nor the assignment itself were appropriate for a college-level psychology course. But no. Frank had to show up and distract everyone’s attention from this important point. And now any readers who missed the umpteen earlier complaints about the assignment are in grave danger of being left with an unrealistic impression of what college coursework is like. Oh, the horror of it!

I’m always amused (and a little hurt) when people here suggest I don’t belong because I’m a little critical of the strip. I’ve used GoComics; archives to read this strip from the beginning. This strip has lost its pizazz. And there is no reason why I should not mention it. I try to be helpful from time to time have explaining what I think the strips weaknesses are in hope that Greg and Karen might read and contemplate. People tell me to go and read other comic strips. I do. I read Luann and Luann Again. I read 9 Chickweed Land and 9 Chickweed Lane Classic. And I might add that the last couple years 9CWL has gone down hill even more that Luann. I also read Crabgrass, Rosebuds and Heart of the City. I tried, I really tried to read Alley Oop but the pace of the stories were so slow and largely unexciting that I had to give up. Back when we would get the news from newspapers I would a lot of other strips as well.

One of the things bothering right now is that GnK have scattered the cast. Tiffany now lives with her father. Gunther lives in the Gulag House. Dex still lives in the dorm and Bernice lives with Luann. While Delta, Knute and Crystal live in exile. The strip was better when all these character attended the same school and most the same class with Mr, Fogey. They could bounce off each other and there was always a character with the desired point of view for any plot. Now everyone is more or less isolated from each other. and that sucks the air out of potential plots. GnK need to get the gang back together. They also, I think, need to graduate everybody from college and have them go out into the world and get jobs. College has been a great disappointment because the writer never really understand what it was like being a student.

I’ve gone on too long. I like the character of Luann but since she is never placed in a situation where she has to push for something she has become boring and trite. Put Luann back into a play. Bring Fay back as a supporting actor in

This week arc was about Nancy being a 47 years old mom who is fatigued from work and is embarrassed and angered by Luann for a homework assignment. Today, Luann feels validated at the expense of her mother’s desire to be helpful. It looks like Luann takes the role of antagonist to explore Nancy’s vulnerability. Was it hilarious?

The job of a comic strip artist is to get people to tune in everyday, and by the number of comments he receives of people psychoanalyzing his cartoon characters only proves his success. So forget about your version of his strip.

Today’s toon should definitely end the arc. I’m thinking we gotta get Luann to move out of the house to have some real plots for her. However one potential plot at the DeGroots could get juicy: Bernice & Jack become pretty tight and he’s there a lot. Luann might feel additional pressure to find a boyfriend.

Hmm, I wonder if there is a subtle Easter egg in here. A connection to the song “I am the Walrus” and we have heard the explanation that “the walrus was Paul” and low and behold the person who looks the most like Paul in this comic strip has a bewildered expression on her face like my secret is out! The gig is up.

As least Greg, or someone, attempted some humor finally! Although, so many of the gags seem to be of a deprecating nature. That is, it comes at one of his characters expense.

Thought I suppose he can’t really provide satire about “sequestering in place.” It’s easier to hint at the impact on his characters. Although, given Nancy’s appearance this week things are still hopping at The Fuse!

All arguments aside, it was nice to see Luann again. Let’s face it, Luann isn’t exactly the brightest bulb on Broadway, but hasn’t that been the point of her character? She’s what, a freshman or at most a sophomore in college? I wasn’t exactly an Einstein then, either. Selfish, self-centered, self doubting and self challenged is somewhat typical of the species. We’ve seen her triumphs, failures and seen her grow. Perhaps a new awareness may come in the realization that her parents are getting older and they have health issues.Personally, I’d like to see G.E. take the point of sleep apnea awareness, as I suffered for years until I finally received good healthcare after a long time without it. I’ve gotten quite used to my CPAP machine, as I’m sure my husband has gotten quite used to a full night’s sleep. In any case, Luann is a soap opera as much as it is a comic strip. I never lose sight of either view of it.

Okay, I will admit I snore…not like a walrus though. I find that if I am extremely tired, that is when I snore the most. Luann’s mom needs to balance her work and sleep schedules. She will feel better in the long run.

As one who snores..going all the way back to being in school and my roommate brought the whole floor into the room to listen (just kill me now) it’s not all that funny. I was mortified..and it’s not like you have much control over it. Dad of all people shouldn’t be surprised since they’ve been married a long time. The humor here is low hanging fruit at a lot of people’s expense.

The punchline is funny because it is a comic. I am not so sure a nineteen year old has gotten beyond doing harmless practical jokes, but this week has been over the top. At 17, yes, but to embarrass her mother at 19 like that is something she should have outgrown. It would have been okay to write about her mother’s aching feet after her busy day. It would have been okay to say that she fell into a deep sleep at the table. Today I learned that my mother can work herself to to sleep. Now that would have been acceptable and sympathetic.
