I think it would be funnier than heck if Jack spent the entirety of the time he was there focused solely on Monstro and not noticing her. She did not want Luann to call him, but now that he is there, she’s turned it on full bore. She flips and flops more than a fish out of water.

Awww, that’s sweet – Bernie is still wearing one of Piro’s scarves. She has worn it so much, it has become threadbare, which is why it is so much thinner than it was when she first got it.

She has saved something from every guy she has put her sights on, the scarf from Piro, a little bag of seeds and stems from Derek, a couple of lug nuts from one of the wheels on Zane’s wheelchair, and a fish from Jack.

I actually like that Bern’s showing she’s interested. This is progress, for her. I wish it didn’t have to be in such a situation, though. Monstro first, eyebatting later!

You know I have always said Bernice is cute, but repressed. She is such a unjustified object of hate and derision in this forum. It was clear though that Jack was coming with a nudge by Luann. Course Bern fibs while getting herself to look slim, fetching (gasp!) sexual. Jack always seems neutral around Luann, as college friend, but Bern, who goes to Mooney is not a college friend. But down deep she wants more. I hope that she finds it with Jack, Gnk leave the door open, maybe. By the way the mysterious Piro is just that mysterious. The game is afoot.

Hahaha — Bernice changed her clothes and redid her hair in less than 10 minutes! I’m just waiting for her to take a deep breath — and maybe do the drop and snap?

Luann is aware that Bernice has the hots for Jack and , on the surface, appears to be making an attempt to get the two together. However, Luann makes no effort to build Bernice up to Jack but rather always throws shade on Bernice. I think Luann enjoys fanning Bernice’s flames but does think that Jack would ever be interested in Bern.

Yeah, I s’pose you learn all about how to help goldfish, because you really like dogs, which lead to your taking assistant vet courses at your community college. (That’s some college!) (And that’s some scarf with that tee-shirt!)

Yikes. Where did Bernice go?? I don’t recognize this trendy looking young lady. A dainty scarf around the neck. A low scoopy shirt? A feminine pose? An airhead comment? Oh boy. She has it bad.

Puddles is so happy to see Jack ♡. Luann wastes no time and she and Jack are extremely concerned about Monstro’s health. Bernice, on the other hand, seems to care only about making a good impression on Jack… I understand that she likes him and she feels awkward to have him around. But it would have been better if she had welcomed him in pajamas and ponytails, but really worried for her little goldfish. Now I kinda hope she will gets scolded by Jack for her negligence towards Monstro.

This explains why Bernice’s hair was so bad the past few days.

Frame 3 says it all for Jack. Bernice may have had a chance if she’d called Jack about Monstro and looked and acted like Bernice. Right now, I don’t think so Tim. Won’t be the “death” of Jack like others Bernice has set her sights on. He was brought in as a character for Luann to interact with and will continue to. Bernice is doing her part and when she’s put into place Jack will still be around to interact with Luann; Bernice might be the third wheel (or Jack might be depending on what they’re doing). Hopefully GnK bring a character that fits natural Bernice (how Bernice normally looks/acts) rather than show Bernice.

The authors seem to think short sleeves are really something quite racy.

Bernice is being portrayed today as a vapid, shallow, inconsiderate bimbo instead of her usual rude, self righteous, arrogant self. Not sure which personality she should keep, but to show her being more concerned about her appearance instead of the welfare of her pet is really hitting a new low. And why she is even interested in Jack is beyond me. He has a square head! And while I’m at it – who wears an avocado colored scarf with a forest green shirt?? Yck!

Funny how Bern has abandoned concern for her exams as well as Monstro in favor of getting dressed up. To be fair, Luann has (in the past) dolled herself up in anticipation of meeting someone. What Bern doesn’t realize is that animals are Jack’s 1st concern and her possible lack of caring for Monstro could and will be a major turn-off.

Jack does not look pleased, in the least, with Bernice’s attire.

It is good that Luann is cluing in Jack on the situation.

Although Luann’s description of the fish “gasping” might be a bit off the mark. At least from what we saw yesterday, Monstro was floating listlessly mid-tank. If that is how he remains, then “gasping” would not be a good descriptor as the fish is breathing through its gills. But, some goldfish will come to the surface and draw in air which can be pushed through the gills…. and if that is what is now happening, Luann’s use of “gasping” is more appropriate.

Luann’s joke today… where she equates Bernice’s (probably) frantic behavior to get gussied up to meet Jack… is quite funny! I can easily imagine Bernice being all “aflutter” while she tries to look her best for Jack, and also how she was running around in circles figuring out how to change her hair, neaten up, etc. And, the hurry and stress Bernice put herself through could easily have had her become a bit winded (gasping). Very, very fun interplay by Luann today.

I like very much how Greg has drawn the “gussied-up” Bernice today. She is still totally true to herself, but she has changed her “vibe” to being a bit reminiscent of the demeanor and posturing that Mary Tyler Moore would often portray when in a similar situation of meeting a potential suitor when she played in her self titled, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. Even Bernice’s use of her scarf today has that MTM sort of feel to it as well!

I am very hopeful that Bernice feels happy as this arc progresses, and I hope that Jack does give Bernice (and of course Monstro) some attention. I think it would be really nice if Jack and Bernice became a couple…. it would be a juxtaposition of the extremely laid back archetype (Jack) and the rather frazzled, intense archetype (Bernice). A classic romantic comedy pairing!!!!!!

Someone said yesterday that Bernice had her hair pulled back to keep it out of her face while she was studying. Wrong. We’ve seen Bernice many times studying or just reading and she never pulled that frizzy mop back from her face. It was just hanging there the way it usually does.

No, this is more of the stereotypical cliches that Greg is so fond of using. You know, the frumpy female takes her hair down, dresses up a bit, and oh! hey! suddenly she’s a glamor girl.

Bernice is not, never has been, and never will be glamorous. The best you can say is she went from frumpy back to her plain, ordinary self.

Not much of a contrast, really.

Bernice is such a liar and a fake. This is not her real personality at all. Jack deserves someone better than this.

I hope Luann tells Jack that Bernice DID know he was coming over in 10 minutes because they talked about it and Bernice changed her clothes and did her hair.

I’m going to call it now. Jack is going to focus on the fish, Luann will take interest in the fish, Bernice, in her insecurity, will try to get Jack’s attention regardless of the fish.Long Shot: Turns out the Bernice failed to change the water often enough, fresh water change, a bit of food, and Monstro will seem happier than ever. Bernice hugs Jack and gives him a kiss. Jack is taken aback because he sees Luann and Bernice as friends, not as potential shack up.

Holy COW! Bernice sure cleans up nicely!

It’s official! Bernice has stepped up her game! She hasn’t been this juiced since Piro. I hope something comes of it.

I wonder if they will have a service for Monstro when he passes on, and will Jack give the eulogy.

If Jack knows anything about fish, why didn’t he give Bernice a bigger tank, with gravel and faux foliage, and, oh, I don’t know, another FISH in it? (Or why didn’t he at least persuade her to get those things?) I can’t imagine keeping a goldfish in such a sad environment. Well, it’s easier for Evans to draw, at least.

Lol! Puddles isn’t the only one happy to see Jack. Love Luann’s description of Bernice and Monstro, spot on! Bernice cleaned up nicely. Now, will she get out of the way so Jack can check on Monstro? :-o

Bernice and Jack feel like a random pairing to me, the kind writers pull out of the air just to have a relationship. (In contrast they got me believing the early days of Bernice and Piro.) Come to think of it, I can’t really think of anybody who would be Jack’s “type” in the regular cast. OTOH, if he dates a lot he must have a few types.

I suspect I may be in the significant minority, but I hope Jack/Bernice works, and they date and become a couple. This strip has no couples who aren’t married, and Jack seems to have enough of that “the world is a simple place” mentality to keep Bern from getting too comfortable on her high horse.

One aspect of Jack worth noting-he’s a pretty solitary character in his own right. The only other person we’ve seen him with is Nil (literally, a nothing). Makes him a good match for Bernice, if he’s serious about the veterinary thing.

it would be even funnier if Jack fell like a ton bricks for her. G&K have made a business out of pairing opposites. The only thing that Jack and Bern do have in common is that they mostly go about their own business, i.e. their respective interests and goals in life and don’t seem to be searching for that special other.

If anyone here remembers, Bernice did take very good care of the service dog she trained from a puppy. When the dog was ready to go to work, Bernice cried, Zane noticed her pain, and they became a couple.
