Sitting too close to a tv was never going to give you vision problems. The real issue is that if you sit too close to the screen everyone else can’t see the tv.
If you can’t feel the hairs on your arm stand out then your not close enough. Besides, i needed that magnetic cling to help keep the Winky Dink vinyl screen protector attached so I could draw and color on it.
Dear Lord, how old is Luann? 19, 20 by this point? And still sitting like that to the TV? This strip would have been more effective if the first panel had been a flashback to her and Brad watching Saturday Morning Cartoons like that.
It’s frustrating to me how they’re keeping her childish. She can grow up and still be “Luann.” Move out the house, get a job, get a LIFE that doesn’t revolve around playing helper-monkey to Bern, Guth, or Tiff who are actually DOING things. Or better yet, go out and get a life away from home. Like Delta, Aaron Hill, Quill, Knute, and all the other side characters who have seeming moved on to other, BETTER things. Leaving our main characters wallowing in their same lives. The monotony makes me sad.
I know you hate this language construction BJ, although I like that you read it so you are definitely encouraged to snark should you want, but this is so human foible strip today. Tomorrow should be interesting so many arc threads out there, or something entirely new.
Part of this joke no longer applies. We sat close because a 27 inch tv in your living room meant you were rich. More common was 19 inch. So you had to sit close. Now with 70 inch being not uncommon you have to sit back to see the entire screen.
I remember back in 1967, when color TV came to Canada. The crabby man across the street bought one, and his couch backed onto the living room window, so his back faced the outside when he watched TV. A family down the street bought the same model, so their kid used to take their remote outside, stand behind the crabby guy watching his new TV, and change the channels, or the color contrast, etc, or just turn the tv off. Then we would all laugh when the Service Technician would arrive i his truck.
It seems as if, in searching for new material for this strip Greg has been reaching farther and farther into his past. This TV joke would have made sense 50 years ago with small screen CRT TV’s Now, when so many people have a 70 inch LED the concept is kind of lame. As for Frank squinting at his laptop… I’m 71, roughly the same age as Greg. I have the same problem. Text that was originally designed for when monitors were 800×600 are too small when viewed at 1200x 800. Zooming-in often drives parts of the page out of view or makes viewing things on your monitor like looking at them through a porthole. Reading glasses help but often their focus is 1 foot away. So you still have to hunch too close to the monitor. What FRank needs to do is buy a 20-24" monitor to connect to his laptop. Since he’s using it on a desk the standalone monitor would no be a problem.
When I was a kid, people still believed that TV sets gave off dangerous Radiation so you had to sit across the room when watching them.
In truth, a few Badly Designed models did emit X-Rays, but they got yanked off the market when it was discovered. Plus, the Direction the X-Rays went was actually off to one side rather than out the Front.
Of course, that was back in the days when the FCC tested pretty much anything Electronic to ensure that it wasn’t causing interference with Someone Else’s Electronic Gadgets. IOW, your TV Set was not allowed to cause a Buzzing Noise in your Radio.
And your Refrigerator wasn’t allowed to cause funny looking lines on your TV Screen when the Compressor kicked in.

Could new arc have rejected, dejected, Bern and Gun comforting each other?

If those monitors still had picture tubes (CRT’s), you could sit there and bask in the cathode rays, LOL.

Outdated gagline- watching a cathode ray tube (CRT) versus LED Monitor technology logic. This gagline belongs in a museum.

Recently discovered how to share my phone screen with the TV. Much easier to read the comics now while lying on the couch.

We had a 7 inch Dumont B&W TV. Dad made us sit across the room (when we were allowed to watch TV). I credit my good eye sight to those early days.

But the drivel that comes out of them has gotten even more detrimental.
