I’ve always disliked the attitude of that quote. It seems like it only gets used when I’m doing a job for someone else that I don’t actually care about, and if I ask “would you rather I just didn’t do it?” the answer is never yes.
Earl may have inferred (rightly or wrongly) that Opal wouldn’t be totally satisfied with the result … meaning that it wouldn’t be right … so not doing it (“not at all”) was the logical choice.
She wants the garage cleaned, but he is no allowed to throw out one item of rubbish. More filth for the heirs to haul to the dumpster. Take a nap and get crabbed at. Do the job and get crabbed at. Get crabbed at and get crabbed at. Put the junk in a rental unit under an assumed name and don’t pay the monthly bill.
Do you think you have a choice? If you do so does she. You may choose to not clean out the garage and she may choose not to make dinner. Or do laundry.
Before you dump on Earl, maybe he called the ‘’Got Junk’’ guys? We used them. ‘’That, that and those.’’’ Gone.
Not a sponsor. It’s just so difficult to cleanout and I’ve been disposing of my ’’treasures’’ (guys, you know what I mean) giving stuff away and calling trash, trash. If I don’t do it, my kid will have to and I’m trying to ease that burden.
Here’s my Panda Rule of Junk; ‘’If it’s been collecting dust for ten years, you’re never going to use it.’’ Heave it.
I’ve always been a fan of putting it off until tomorrow. “It’s the most perfect day to start any job – tomorrow. Most marvelous day that was ever invented. Why, there’s absolutely nothing a man can’t do… tomorrow.” – Andy Griffith Show – Opie’s Hobo Friend
She could have used different words. “Earl, the garage is past due for a cleaning. When do you think is a good time to get started? Do we need to hire someone to do it if you can’t?” But I suppose after being married as long as these two have, the comment to clean the garage is rather standard, as we have seen him sit on his, um, sofa, and demand a meal.
His is exactly my sentiment after I bid the Family Business farewell, and Pop’s similar quotes, and went to work for Bell Telephone Laboratories and gave me 12 months to do 6 months of DOD contract work.

Yes Earl you have a choice. And you’ve made the wrong one. Which you’ll find out soon.

I don’t mind doing difficult tasks, what I do mind is being told to rush it. I can do fast or I can do right, rarely are both achieved.

They put stuff in the garage because there was no room in the house for it. Now she wants it out of the garage. Are they going to get a backyard shed?

If it’s such a good day for cleaning the garage, why doesn’t Opal do it? Or they could do it together.

The one my father used to say was:
“When in trouble,
When in doubt,
Run in circles,
Scream and shout."
