Told you there would be more heaped on Nancy. Hopefully Luann’s overture will start a recuperation. But more likely, Nancy will admit to feelings of age creeping up on her. We all hope it isn’t an illness related malaise.
Nancy isn’t tired because of her age. She’s tired because she was verbally harassed. I had gone through that at work (when both my eyesight and hearing declined and my bosses insisted that I was just trying to get out of certain tasks instead of reporting that I needed a Captel phone and a larger computer screen). It is exhausting to be verbally harassed, whatever your age…
A friend of mine who is about the same age Nancy is (give or take a year or two) has been making claims that ageism is the new irritant. I’m beginning to think she’s right. It’s out there.
Nancy doesn’t have to work. So, why she is waiting tables instead of acting like an owner and supervise her workers? The whole thing is just silly and illogical. She can just sit in an office and do some bookkeeping or place orders, etc. No need to be on her feet for hours and deal with buggers like those two girls. She could give her waiter job to some young coed who needs the money.
Yikes! Nancy looks like she knocked back a few libations at her bar before she made it home! If the work is beating her down that badly she really needs to consider cutting back. Better yet, look at her young “perky” daughter and ask her what she does to fill the void when she is not taking classes at the community college and taking Puddles for walks. Yep, perhaps it is time for Luann to step up and contribute! “Say Luann, you want to save up some money and help your Mom at the same time?”.
Luann’s concern for her mother’s health is genuine, but she also knows how sensitive she’s to comments that may relate to her age and is able of making a save and start to pamper her with love. Even if it’s a bad save, Nancy seems to appreciate it very much. I would love to see a heart-to-heart conversation between mother and daughter about fatigue and age. It could be sad, but it could be sweet too ♡.
As others have pointed out, Nancy is hardly a geriatric. She can’t be much older than early to mid-40s. Not sure why the writers are carrying on as if she’s in her 80s.
Since Nancy is the OWNER, I never understood why she is waitressing. She should be overseeing what’s going on, playing hostess/greeter, and maybe fill in IF things are crazy and they are shorthanded….and, in that case, NOT wear the traditional uniform that makes her look like a low-level employee.
Yesterday Tiffany was standing in the kitchen with her hands in her pockets chatting with TJ while Nancy was waiting tables. It’s not hard to see where the problem is and Nancy, as an owner and manager, should be able to recognize it. If we have all week go by without her addressing the obvious, then it’s her own fault.
I thought this arc was flawed and far-fetched from the first day, because even though Nancy made a mistake on the order, I don’t think she looks like a “granny” or someone with age-related cognition problems. Maybe that’s just me in denial :) But she does look tired, and I agree with the poster who said there is more to that than we know about yet. But then again, maybe she is just working too hard.
It now looks less likely that “Mr. Flirt” at the Fuse is going to cheer Nancy up, unless this arc continues into next week, which I kinda doubt.
So, is it Frank to the “rescue” as I and several other have predicted?
Or:
1) Nancy deciding to call it quits and hire a replacement(s)?
2) Luann stepping up to the plate and becoming a waitress at the Fuse?
3) Frank saying a few soothing words to Nancy and all will be forgotten by Saturday?
Actually I kinda hope it’s #2.
Having her work at the Fuse would get Luann back in the game. Plus put her in contact with new people, and old friends (and enemies) from the past who are now at other colleges. And it would put her into direct contact with her old nemesis, Tiffany.
Oh yeah, I forgot.
4) After Frank “flops” on Friday, Nancy is comforted by Puddles on Saturday. ;)
Nancy needs some pampering, maybe a massage, something to raise her spirits. There were a couple older waitresses at my favorite restaurant. They’d been there through several owners, 30-40 years. They were the best, energetic, pleasant and often put the younger servers to shame with their energy.
I thought Nancy had been filling in as a bartender because Pru had returned to New York, and that Tiffany had been hired as wait staff? If that is the case, Nancy should return to bartending and tell TJ to direct Tiffany to return to waiting on tables — not to talking to him in the kitchen…
Nancy should only play to the older crowd. Being a servant to brats doesn’t do anything for her dignity and self esteem. She’s the boss, show some cleavage and shmooze the big tippers…..
Don’t fret. They will be called granny too by some other young inconsiderate girls later in life. However, just remember that younger guys are looking at you and consider you a hottie because of your good looks and life experiences…….
She has allowed those nasty little girl bullies to get into her head. Nancy is still youthful and vibrant. She just has to get those “Granny” comments out of her head. This is the only real power bullies have—-to try and destroy you from within. I hope she will shake it off and not let it bother her long term.
Geez, mom, you look like CRAP! I mean, forget getting hit with an ugly stick – you look like you got hit with an ugly CANNON!
You look so ugly, you could turn Medusa to stone! You look so ugly that Freddy Krueger could give you makeup tips! You look so ugly that roadkill feels grateful!
You look so ugly that it’s what I’d imagine Rocky’s face would’ve looked like if the cumulative damage he took in the 5 original movies hit him all at once!
Another original comment disappeared! I filed an official complaint with GoComics on this repeat experience. I might be at fault from time to time, forgetting to hit the submit button, but this has been happening too often to ignore. Anyway, I don’t think that using the word “haggard” is any example of Luann’s lack of sensitivity or intelligence, which so many here, generationally I believe, are so quick to accuse the Luann character of; I think it’s honest, shows concern, love, and is written to aid the humor here. Last thing mom needs is to hear haggard, but tired might be just as disappointing to her. She is going through a midlife crises! I think it’s great that a female’s midlife crises is covered here, with hilarity ensuing. As I always like to say (and not smugly) follow the story, don’t project it to get to the point.
One thing I have concluded is that if you don’t want to be perceived as old then move about with energy (i.e. when in public); don’t walk slow; walk at a good pace and with energy. what you look like is less important than your energy level… the way I see it.

In a moment of fatigue and mental exhaustion Nancy contemplates letting her hair go grey, buying a rocking chair, and learning to crochet doilies.
