I may be (mostly) absent tonight, I’m too verklemp about what’s happening in 9 Chickweed Lane. After a brief story in WWII we have moved to a story set before Edda and Amos were married. Also, that Amos had refused to carter to Edda’s every need. I feel like I entered the Twilight Zone.
I love Max. Like, he’s a little lap dog, but he’s the chillest little dude in this whole strip, and there’s gotta be extra points for the perpetual blep. Okay, Jack, maybe take Bernice to get coffee or ice cream so we can see him dive into a pup cup, alright?
Bernice, you aren’t much of a listener. You’re in your own world, defending yourself. I’ve got news. Jack doesn’t care. I suspect he came to see Nil as he knows he comes to the park to see you. That’s all. You’re the one who made it a big issue. Chillax, girl.
For some reason, Bernice realized that she is becoming attached to Nil and has gone into denial. She has to be in control but making out with Nil stirs the sexual tension and her control is starting to slip.
I’m starting to wonder if these are just Bernice’s emotional / sexual complexes or is there even a part of her that doesn’t see Nil as her equal, other than not being her usual type. She really seems ashamed of being madly attracted to him. Jack has no words… Jack likes Bernice, but as Nil’s best friend, he has to tell him. Because it’s not fair for her to talk about him like that. Nil probably will not care, but a friend should let him know.
She may not be expressing herself very well, but I am ok with Bernice’s attitude. It’s rough being the “cool” girl/person who is just interested in physical affection, especially if she’s starting to develop feelings for Nil (& it sounds like she is). She also may be considering taking things to the next level physically, and as the female that may involve concerns about birth control which, of course, she can’t discuss explicitly in this comic strip, yay american sex ed.
Is her major psychology? I don’t see Bernice as being a good therapist. She doesn’t listen and is too wrapped up in her own issues to listen to anyone else.Just walk away, Jack. Bernice will never notice that you’re gone.
Bernice still has inner conflicts over her relationship with Nil. Way back on July 21st Bern wanted to set limits on “making out.” Otherwise “I’ll get out of control.” She just may impulsively plant one on Jack before before the week’s out. Just like Nil… with a little tongue.
Jack is a hard character to figure out. He came on fast and strong at first. Pretty much a good-timing playboy. He swept Luann off he feet – literally, at the bowling alley. There were plenty of double entendres being thrown around there too. Then there was the dog park meet with Luann in July of 2018 where GnK had Jack going through a life changing goal to become a vet tech. He had also gone through a physical change from Cave Man Jack to Handsome Jack at that point. He’s still a pretty fast worker with other females (ala Kaylie at the dog park, Sept. 2019) but has friend-zoned all the regular characters. GnK have made him into a sort of Bonhomme Richard character. Much like Oxford. A one-trick pony. Sometimes a catalyst, but never taking part in the action.
I don’t get what K&G are doing with Bern’s character… She is so completely a bore, now. No true redeeming qualities. I’m such a fan of this strip but I don’t enjoy her at all any more. Ughghghgh! Please change her back to a little bit less annoying.
I’m always amused at how out of touch the writer for this comic is. Bernice is guilty and defensive about her relationship with Nil when all they do is kiss and pet? Please. Somebody show G&K the way to the reality door! And Jack, well Jack coincidentally showed up when they were suppose to meet because his friend Nil told him he’s uncomfortable with Bernice’s neurosis about sex and he’s wanting to get out of the relationship before it goes any further. Nil has asked Jack to pave the way for a break up and in a minute Jack will start pointing out the “less than desirable” aspects of what they are doing. If all they do is meet in a public park to make out in front of total strangers something is definitely missing.
There is an upside to the way she is putting her nymphomania on display – Bernice will be a very popular girl on campus with all the boys. Just give it time for the word to get around.
There is every indication that someday, the hapless people who wind up with Bernice as a therapist of any kind will be like being forced to drink cyanide to cure a cold.
Bernice has changed a lot since high school. She was always the cool head, the opposite of Luann. She no longer is the self-assured person she once was, but I think she is one of the most interesting characters in this strip. Many have commented that she wouldn’t make a good therapist. On the contrary. I’ve met many therapists over the years and one of the things they all have in common is a need for a therapist. Bernice, like most therapists I’ve known, overthinks everything.
When I was 34, I started dating a woman who was 32. She was cute, had a master’s degree, and a good job. She had her own two bedroom condo. Generally speaking, she had an outgoing personality. She was also a virgin, who was determined to hold onto that until her wedding night. Now, I had no problem with that, and I told her so. I was willing to wait, as I had been “around the block” with a few women before her, so I was not lusting to get into her pants. I was willing to let the relationship develop without trying to push intercourse, and see if it would blossom into something that I would want to take on in marriage. The problem was, she kept bringing up her virginity all the time. Then, she would try to start an argument about it, when none existed..… Kind of like what Bernice is doing now. She got to be such a basket case about this, it was affecting our relationship as a whole. We discussed it several times, but as time went on, it just kept getting worse… Suddenly, she didn’t like it when I would wear a T-shirt with a pair of cargo shorts… Dumb stuff like that. It got to be so bad, I had to end the relationship. We dated for about nine months. That was back in 2004… I haven’t heard from her since. I wouldn’t be surprised if today she’s a 49 year old virgin.
Contraction again, jeez. I must be reading another comic than many here. Jack is the one who triggered a very confused, unsure, ball of passion and iron restraint—cross-emotions battling each other—Bernice embarrassing her about the kissing as being a public hook-up. Matter-of-factly with no concern about her; rather he brings up the fish. All the accusations about her not listening to him shows how much people here love to hate on Bernice as opposed to trying to understand why she is the way she is drawn. I support Bernice here, and at least in this panels Jack is being a pompous, insensitive ass.
Ok, we get it Bernice is not comfortable with the fact that she likes to snog like most normal people, we don’t really need a repeat of this storyline. All the Luann characters might need a reboot.

Could be that You don’t really about you and Nil either.
Unfortunately, and apparently, Nil DOES.
