Bernice, do you realize that when Jack’s dog started to squirm, Jack used him as an excuse to get up and leave? He could have stayed put, calmed his dog, and continued to converse with you? But, no, he was given an out by his dog and left quickly. That screamed the fact he is not interested in you. But Nil is. And you like him back. One-sided romance never works.
In panel 1, Bernice is managing to control the drool pretty well. I’m actually glad GnK is letting us see Bernice’s wild side. We know she has one: https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2014/10/09
Anyone notice that in the last panel, not only did Bernice’s eyebrows drop by about 2 inches, but her nose is no longer a little point like in the first two panels – it is now rounded and slopes down. All the aging she did not do in the last 36 years of the strip, she accomplished in just five seconds today.
And that’s the downside of a basic two party system. It would overly complicated but interesting to have a Greek Chorus like Hermans Head or Inside Out.
It’s nice to see that part of Bernice is still funny, likable and hates her extremely presumptuous and stiff other side. Being like Bernice must be really tiresome! Too many internal blocks and hardly any fun because she has to be serious all the time… Poor Bernice! I really hope Nil will be able to help her be more able to enjoy the unexpected in the life.
What a dopy, sappy expression Bernice has on her face in the first panel. :D :D
Bet she never looks like that after her ahhhhh…..encounters with Nil.
She goes from sappy face (1st panel) to grumpy face. (last panel) Good thing for her Jack didn’t see the “many faces of Bernice.” That probably would have scared him off permanently.
He’s not interested in you, Bernice. In fact, I don’t think he’s interested in ANYONE. I know he’s supposed to be a hunk by the way he’s drawn, but his character is presented so bland…so vanilla….he seems asexual.
GnK have done a great job showing Bernice struggling with balancing desires this week. Her angel and devil give a good idea of the daily stuggle she’s going thru. What she needs to learn is how to mix the two together a little and maybe, just maybe she’ll be more suited for the role she wants;-)
Wow, talk about padding. Today’s strip (the whole week’s worth of strips, actually) doesn’t tell us anything about the characters that we didn’t already know. The strip is just treading water at this point: stalling for time but without any end goal in mind that it’s waiting for. And isn’t this the third storyarc in a row to hint at some status quo change only to wimp out and keep everything just as it was before?
There is a certain fascination in watching Evans work through his issues regarding sex. It gets very creepy at times, but then apparently he remembers it’s just a comic strip. I wonder if he is in therapy to try to work out some of these issues?
If we apply today’s apparent norm on the streets – fifth panel – the one in black pulls out a 9mm and shoots the one in brown and claims they disrespected them.
There is nothing wrong in admitting someone is attractive, even if you’re in a relationship. The trouble starts when you do something about the person you see as attractive, when you’re in a relationship.
The more I think about it, the more I think Bernice ought to commit to dating Nil. Even if it doesn’t work out, and they don’t do it for each other, Bernice could use a little relationship experience (as could a lot of the characters in the vast Luanniverse). When you think about it, other than the characters we’re supposed to make assumptions about, Gunther has the most dating/relationship experience.
And my dear, this is the first step towards realizing and healing your psychological fetishes. Life is a delicate balance between feeling with emotional input and administrating intellectual prowess. Take the leap girl!
One more thing about GE: if his daughter is writing the stories, shouldn’t she be given partial credit? It seems dishonest that GE should get all of it for himself.
It is ironic that of all the characters in the Luanniverse it’s Bernice that turns out to be the one most troubled by lust. She tries to use her mind to place limits on fulfilling her sexual needs but her eyes keep messing things up. Watch out, Nil! You’re walking into a raging fire!
I love the expression on her face in the first panel. To me it looks like the same expression that Charles M. Schultz would draw for Charlie Brown whenever he thought of the little red haired girl. Perhaps it’s an homage on G&K’s part?

You know what?
Bernice should listen to the little devil in black.
By all means she should make an overt play for Jack.
Because it’s about time that she got a well deserved, long overdue taste of rejection.
And I’ll wager that Bern won’t handle it half as well as Tiffany and Luann have.
In fact, that’s probably why she hasn’t gone after Jack in the first place, because she’s afraid he won’t take her seriously.
So go after him, Bernice and suffer those consequences.
And it would serve you right if Nil tells you to go pound sand after Jack shrugs you off.
