Time to lighten up there, Frank. She came home buoyant, brimming with excitement and expectations. There are ways to let her know that there are always bound to be some bad days mixed in with the good without bringing her down completely. THINK already!!!

Yes Frank, it’s all thanks to your help, Luann has no merit at all… Sometimes Frank’s jokes are REALLY weird, annoying and a little too mean even by the standard of “Dad’s Jokes”. Luckily he’s the first not to believe what he said. Anyway, it’s sweet that he remember so well how his daughter was like at 13.

So when’s the last time we’ve seen Aaron Hill?

Aaron Hill has become sort of the Flattop of this comic strip; definitely gone (though not dead), but he does make periodic returns in memories.

Frank has the “daddy downer” act down perfect and he was incredibly rude and mean when his daughter’s dog was lost. I can’t think of any time at all in this comic when I have liked his character.

I’m surprised. I never thought we’d see Aaron Hill again. But here he is in today’s comic.

I think I finally understand why Luann always acts 13 years old. It’s because her PARENTS, especially her Dad still treat her as if she is perpetually 13!!!!! Today she is trying to talk to him about some good work she is doing that relates to her potential teaching career and instead of supporting her and treating her like an adult all HE can do is reminisce in the most negative way about how awful SHE was at 13. This is so strange. It’s as if they do not WANT her to mature or feel capable and adult in any way. Her dad is being at his worst here today. She’s so enthusiastic about her success as a tutor and all he can do is deflate her at every turn.

Reality Check Frank in da house! No point in babying a young “adult”.

I get the impression that most commenters aren’t sure just what to make of this arc!

Luann was 13 in 1985. In real time, she would be 50 and already teaching for 28 years now!

And did you tell your father that currently, marrying into a male dominated industry as a trophy wife is a way more fun and lucrative way to get health insurance & housing than majoring in education?

I am finding it a bit surprising how a lot of folks are becoming angry at Frank I’ve the last two days.

To me, Frank is just poking some gentle fun at some of Luann’s statements….. not because he disagrees with Luann….. but to simply remind Luann that she was sometimes behaving in a similar way to Axel…… and that even the best advice from an “authority figure” be it a Dad, a Mom, a Teacher, or a Tutor….. often gets summarily ignored.

Frank is not aware of Axel’s infatuation with Luann….. so he cannot respond to that….. be he can respond about being ignored…. And has now done so in a potentially valuable way to help Luann see a “bigger picture”.

Frank sure seems to despise his daughter.

PLEASE don’t let that be a sign of the imminent return of Aaron Hill. Once was enough.
