A memo to parents everywhere: If you’re going to be that kind of mom or dad, don’t expect your kids to talk to you about anything going on in their lives.
So! We finally found out something about where Bernice gets these internal guilt dialogues. It’s her mom talking. Maybe Nancy can replace some of those mom messages with her own.
So bernice can’t get her mom out of her head. She feels like her mom is watching her every move.
Bernice, if you weren’t considering doing anything sexual with nil at degroots house, why did you invite him and start making out with him. Then prove his point that you WANT to get caught. Only to freak out when you do. You gave this guy mixed signals and i’d be surprised if he wants to see you again. You have spent WAY WAY WAY…eons WAY too much time with luann and her wishy-washy indecisive attitude has really rubbed off.
Bernice’s mom kicked her out for reasons that don’t make sense, once Bernice, an RA, was kicked out of her dorm for reasons that don’t make sense. So yes, her mother is weird. Yes, Bernice can’t handle… can’t even bring myself to call it a relationship. Nope, Bernice is not acting like a delicate flower who’s afraid to get too physical; she’s acting like a weeeeeeirdo. No college age woman would do this to her so-called boyfriend.
It seems Bernice doesn’t know herself at all. She doesn’t recognize herself in her mother. She thinks she is different from her mom. That or she never really looks at herself. She looks outwards and analyzes people. Now it is time for her to look inward.
Appreciate Nancy because Mothers’ Day is coming and the evil mother, Ann Eiffel will emerge from the shadows, Toni will reveal that she is with child, and Bets will be expecting more than just final test results.
Love the way Nancy is approaching Bernice here. She knows how much that bunch of complexes she knows since forever is suffering and really wants to helps her. Nancy is so sweet and so brave ♡. Good to know more about Bernice’s parents. The more I know about them, the more I want to see them! Just because someone that Bernice herself call “uptight” has to be really something extreme. Bernice just said her mother would never try to help her talking with her about love and relationship… This is really sad.
Connie Shearer. With all the parental problems in this strip, your sociology skills are needed. It seems that all the parental couples have issues. Is it possible that this is a reflection of Greg Evans own issues with HIS parents?
Nancy is an idiot to believe what Bernice says about her mother. She should butt-out and reserve judgement until she actually meets the woman. I’m sure Mrs. Halper has a completely different story than the one Bernice tells. Nancy is so interested in being the important mother person. What an ego. She makes all these assumptions, but has obviously never even met, or bothered to speak to Bernice’s mom. She didn’t even have a discussion with her about having Bernice come to live with them. The whole story about brother Ben leaving her with no where to live is probably just more of her hysterical bullsh*t. It seems to me that with Bernice having major life issues, and displaying some serious neurosis, this would be the perfect time for Nancy DeGroot to speak to her REAL PARENTS. I wonder how she would feel if some other woman stepped into the mom shoes with Luann?
To Dawn Quinn1 : Greg and his wife had a child before they were married and gave the child up for adoption. Maybe all of this is based on his experiences with what that meant to his family (?)
This strip is a variation on the theory of Peter’s Principle. The kids’ functioned well through high school, but rose in age to the point of of incompetence as young adults. Maybe this “vestibule” to maturity is a common thing for many kids coming out of high school. Lost.
I wouldn’t believe anything Bernice said about her mother.
Bernice once called Luann judgmental and nosey. Mind you, this was after the incident where Bernice was spying on Luann, eavesdropping and following her around, and then Bernice went to her brother and was screaming about what a bad friend Luann was, calling her a lying sneak.
But Luann is judgmental and nosey!
Bernice said this to Nancy, and Nancy completely agreed with that assessment of her daughter’s character, and blamed it all on Frank. Kinda makes me wonder about Nancy, who apparently had nothing whatever to do with raising Luann.
I’m really hoping Bernice breaks her 35-year streak and finally achieves a bit of character growth. We’ll see how she acts the rest of the week, and more importantly, the next time we see her. Because there’s been numerous times where it appeared like she learned a lesson, only for her to forget it all by the next time she appeared.
Maybe we should get to see Luann going to another woman and describing Nancy as a person who can’t be spoken to, who freaks out about everything, a person with no understanding. That would be an excellent twist.
Bernice could do herself a world of godd if she just rented a room, grabbed Nil and got laid. Once she’s given in to her inner slut it will be a lot easier for her to say things like I don;t need to slut around today." Kind of like how alcoholics will argue with themselves that they don;t need to drink today

Gee.
Bernice considers her parents “uptight.”
Bets considers her parents “weird.”
Les HATES his mom.
Shannon’s dad is a self-centered deadbeat.
Tiffany’s dad takes her for granted.
Gunther’s mom is a “smotherer.”
Are there ANY Happy families in this Strip besides the DeGroots?
PS: WHERE did they stash Frank??

It’s cartoon tradition that teenagers can talk to anyone’s parents but their own.
I believe that started with the “Archie” series.
