By that map where do they live Indiana or Illinois? If he sees Michigan to the north in the distance. Kentucky or Tennessee, probably not these as they never gave a redneck attitude.
Reminds me of the first summer I lived with my wife and two stepsons. We went to a water park just north of Toronto and there was a slide that was about 60 feet above the ground to start. the youngest asked me to take him up there. He was 7 at the time. I did NOT want to do that but one must not show fear and said “OK”. It was exhilarating. We went back several times until the wife and oldest boy wanted to move on to another part of the park.
My lucky day. My daughter bought me 2, 1992 C & H books at a church sale yesterday. One looks like the first book Watterson published, simply titled “Calvin and Hobbes”, but it is a 23rd printing. The second is “The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes” and appears to be a first printing. She said she paid .50 each for them.
Took me a second to recognize the Great Lakes. I used to make a game of putting on the NASA channel and trying to identify Earth’s land masses. I never could tell where the heck they were until a name came up on the screen, and sometimes I still couldn’t recognize it to be the area they said. The trouble is that north can be any direction up or down, left or right, when you’re in orbit. Then about half the “map” is obscured with cloud cover. It can be quite the puzzle.
As a kid, standing atop the garage, I told myself the ground was closer to my feet than my eyes, so I wasn’t jumping from eye level, but from foot level. After jumping, lying on the ground, I realized both my feet and eyes were on the ground, so my eyes had been right about how high it was. I didn’t repeat my jump.
A friend owned a public pool that had a slide. He had a party for some tennis buddies. Another friend was going up the ladder, slowly, even though he had a real problem with heights. When I hollered “WE MUST LOOK LIKE ANTS!” he aborted the mission.
Reminds me of how high Fleishhacker pool in SF was. When you jumped into that salt water, it felt like you hit cement. And the platform seemed 1000 feet high
My son was Calvin’s age when we went to a park with HUGE slides. He wasn’t sure he wanted to try one so I said I’d go with him. Down we went with him between my legs.He was silent when we got to the bottom. I asked, “What do you think?” He said, “That was fast. . . I was scared. . . Let’s do it again!”
There is family movie (pre-video media format) that shows me sliding down a slide, very, very slowly. Making the journey down worth the effort of climbing up.
We had a slide at school that looked like that to us first graders. And it was metal just like that one looks. You could just about burn your butt off on a hot day.
This reminds me of the time my nephew was climbing up a big curly slide. He got scared at first, but he got down the slide and felt better after I caught him when he came down.

I remember the old metal slide at the city park. Best place to blister your butt in town. That thing was HOT in the summer.
Jeff0811 over 2 years ago
The only problem with a slide that tall is that by the time you finish you are two time zones away from where you started.

Even my acrophobia isn’t that bad.

When I was Calvin’s age I fell off the slide at school. Knocked me out. Mom came and took me home. I went right back up the ladder the next day.
