I truly like this form of ‘social media.’ It is just that, i.e., social. Comments usually can be gentle, funny, thoughtful, inventive, and evocative. But, ordinarily, they are respectful of other commenters.

A departure from that pattern occurs when elections or controversial events bring rancorous disagreement. Even then, disagreements, for the most part, don’t boil over into personal insult or profanity.

Unfortunately, the model is rarely recorded in the wider world.

I saw a post this morning on a quote. The response started with an irrelevant observation and then followed with “I will not respect the intelligence of anyone who accepts the above quote who cannot refute what I said.” Since his comment was irrelevant, there was no reason they could not both be true, and I pretty much agreed with both. So I guess he thinks I am stupid even though I agree with him. That says something about him doesn’t it.

I saw one cartoon that used a clever twist: the doctor asked for more information about what the “intrusive” voices in the girl’s head were saying. It turned out to be things like “don’t commit murder” and “consider the consequences of your actions.”

I value my inner dialogue. Fortunately, I don’t have access to the drugs or mental health professionals that would make it an external dialogue and get me in trouble.

I had a friend tell me that it was OK because he could hear the voices in my head. Needless to say, I backed away slowly. The only voice I hear in my head is mine.

I am constantly reminded of George Orwell’s novel, “1984,” — about the pervasiveness of the two-way television that functioned as a surveillance tool for The Party. Members of the Inner and Outer Party were all required to keep the screens on at all times. The volume could be lowered by some, but never turned off.

Once they get into your head … it’s not your head anymore.

It’s hard to impose critical thinking on a civilization which has “let it slide” as politically detrimental. However, start with Occam’s Razor. If it’s a choice between aliens, a secret conspiracy or the usual human failings, human failings should win. :)
