The good old days were when we were good and young…or at least young.

To reiterate: Arlo and Janis are realizing they are old.

A&J will revisit this topic again tomorrow. Then every day forever.

The years aren’t getting harder. They (Arlo and Janis) are getting softer.

That’s your place. Here it never had been so warm on a years end ever recorded. 20 °C in the day, still 16°C at midnight! I’m at exact the latitude as the US/Canada border here in Germany.

I was looking forward to a calm and peaceful retirement. Fat chance.

Oh, well. I know that I am not the only member of that club.

My wife and I are having the same sort of discussions. Also, we’re wondering if the world has just gone utterly insane the past decade or so (a la Idiocracy), or if it’s just our perceptions since we’ve basically dropped out of all popular culture a while ago.

Oh well. Let’s all hope the best for 2023!

That is exactly how it should be. Our time grows shorter, our tasks become both easier (because we can’t do all the things we did before) and more challenging. Eventually there will be a time we don’t do anything, because everything belongs to the world we leave behind. That is what a completed life looks like.

May The Road Rise Up To Meet You

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fieldsand until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.(traditional gaelic blessing)

This traditional Irish blessing is an ancient Celtic prayer. Celtic literature is famed for using images of nature and everyday life to speak of how God interacts with His people.“May The Road rise up to meet you” is about God’s blessing for your journey – may your walk be an easy one – with no huge mountains to climb or obstacles to overcome. It alludes to three images from nature – the wind, sun and rain – as pictures of God’s care and provision. The “wind” can be likened to the Spirit of God, who came as a “mighty wind” at Pentecost. The suns warmth in the prayer reminds us of the tender mercies of God, “by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven” (Luke 1:78, NIV), whilst the soft falling rain speaks of God’s provision and sustenance. Finally, we are reminded that we are held safe in God’s loving hands as we travel on our journey through life.

I agree, it isn’t the mud that makes life hard, it’s how you keep going deeper in that makes it worse.

The last several days have been milder, but around Christmas here it was in the single digits & sub-zero range, with dangerous wind-chill factors.

It’s the years, sweetheart. I remember being so optimistic that 2020 would be a great year, and it’s been downhill every since. At this point I’m just grateful that some of my friends and family are still alive, albeit in poor health and barely hanging on. This Christmas Eve I reheated my dinner over a tea candle bite by bite in a house where I could see my own breath, while under a boil water alert with no power and zero degrees outside. Could things get worse? Sure, we’re still alive, we still had food and a house, my country isn’t currently at war, all those things could be taken away. I’m ready for an easy year.

Problem we have is excess stupidity in the world.

Latest bit of same – we needed to buy a new “all in one” (printer/scanner/copier/fax) as my old died as far as printing is concerned about two years ago – it did everything but printed a gray page, which also meant that incoming faxes had to go to a flash stick drive in the unit as could not print them out with it. So not wanting to be out and about a lot during Covid (still are not) we bought a small printer/scanner unit. This had its own peculiarity. It does not copy pages which have bar codes on them – only copies right or left half of the page (whichever is without the code) so problem with NYC business returns – had to scan with original unit and then print out scan and printed okay.

So with tax season coming husband decided it was time to buy new all in unit. Everything about it said it duplex prints 7 scans, Bought one. Managed to carry it into house 7 upstairs. Duplex prints. Does not duplex scan. Scans page(s) one side. Then have to take stack and turn over in correct direction and it scans same. Who thought that was right? Managed to carry downstairs, repack & return. Had to get a different unit which actually duplex scans -even heavier – and get it up the stairs. Then it took a day to get it to work – more or less – with my assorted software.
