Vinyl planking, especially with a travertine appearance, is easy to clean yet provides traction even when wet. It also looks nice. If you fall on it, there’s less injury than porcelain tile, wood, or stone. I know from experience.
I was raised in a house with hardwood floors and two brothers. We never had any problems like portrayed here. Of course, we were taught outside was for roughhousing and how to behave in the house, so there is that.
Millions of homes with kids have hardwood and other hard surfaces and have for decades with no major problems on that score. Makes for a funny comic strip, though.
I remember when my parents did the big remodel at our house, and put in hardwood flooring in the kitchen and great room. It was AWESOME for sock-skating.
My sister had six kids and switched to hardwood floors. The cleaning was a lot easier, there were no major accidents, and visiting her was like being in a junior high gym during a pep rally.
Darryl, depends on the flooring you put in. If you choose the distressed barn wood look the slipping and sliding will be minimized but the roughness of the floor. Even better, put in cut slate flooring.
Northern California raised: the living room was the only room with carpeting (a room used only to receive guests—no plastic covering on furniture needed). Kitchen, family room, bedrooms had tile floors (great during 4-5 months of 100+ degree temps). Bedroom floors had throw rugs.
My solution would be hire a good carpet cleaning company to come in and give ithe carpet a good cleaning and then keep up with it by using your own machine or rent one then when Wren is old enough not to spill things then replace carpet. But it is a waste of time to put new carpet in with the kids still being young enough for spills to happen.

Good call guys. I can see Hammie sliding down a hallway crashing into something or someone.

What would be the down side if it were floors of either stone or tatami?

Hardwood flooring but with carpet runner. Nah, Hammie would play Magic Carpet (as you do on a Slip & Slide) ! Still would be “no brakes!”

Just add a few rumble strips in strategic locations.

Yeah, having your kids being frequent flyers at the ER isn’t a good thing.

At least Wren has a padded landing when she loses her footing.

Perhaps go with tatami mats?

Carpet is safer, but hardwood and ceramic tile are easier to maintain.

Over the past 20 years, we have gradually replaced all our carpet with wood floors. Good decision.

This is why I DESPISE hardwood floors. So much maintenance and your kids/pets will hate coming ear it after the first accident.

We lived in a house built in the mid-1700’s with the original floors. Hammie would get slivers.

Ugh carpet. Take it up one time and you will never want it again. Disgusting how much gets under it. Vacuum can’t get it all.

I figured they’d already be on a first-name basis at the ER. They might even have an examination room named for the family.
