Even the pros will tell you: comedy is harder to do than drama, and that’s because comedy is suggestive. In a drama, if you walk into a room and told everyone your dog died, people are naturally going to respond with sadness. In a comedy, if you walk into a room and told everyone a burglar broke into your house, killed your wife, and ate your children, different people are going to respond differently: some might find humor in such an absurd anecdote, others are going to be put off by the mentions of murder in such a light-hearted context.
Panel #1: reminds me of a song from Les Miz, “Empty chairs at empty tables”. The French troops wiped out the students and their revolution at the barricade. A survivor returns to the cafe where they had gathered and finds only the emptiness of their defeat. This theme of defeat is always present in a Luann story line.
I am pretty sure “Starr Falling” is going to be Walt’s life story but for Luann I would have to guess it would be about her family, likely Brad and have numerous anctedotes about his escapades, particularly those with TJ which used to infuriate Frank and of course before he met Toni D and became a firefighter.
The way these story arcs draw out and change in flux we may find out what the stories are about by Thanksgiving or so.
Wonderful Mrs Horner. I like the encouraging and respectful way she talks to Piro (whom she calls by the name he choice) and how happy and proud she’s of Luann and the talent she shows to have. Piro and Luann finally get to know each other, it becomes clear that he’s not in the writing class out of his wish, but because his therapist advised him to do it . He and Luann are very different, but he immediately understood what kind of person she is and this is amazing. With these compliments Piro has become The Antibernice. The meeting between him, Bernice and Luann could lead to an explosion! It’s so nice to see Luann so speechless about receiving sincere compliments from someone she likes. I’m so happy for her. Let’s hope her happiness continues.
He stood still, staring deeply into her soul as he uttered the words “You have to be so quick and clever”. She was at a loss for words as her eyes met his. Though speechless, she felt a stirring deep within her. ‘Is this love? Lust? Or am I hungry?’……lol
Never go out with someone because they look like they need cheering up. It took me 10 years to figure that one out. Fortunately, we had an amicable divorce. :) :(
Piro is very melancholy; I guess there hasn’t been much to laugh about in his life (so far) but the fact that he is interested in finding some is a good sign. not sure one needs to be quick and clever; you just need to have the content, to be able to laugh at yourself and at circumstances.
Oh no, it’s on y’all! For sure, I’ll go out on that limb. The tortured, handsome soul, whose drama piece is excruciatingly personal and inspiring being read out loud publicly by him, something his “thera”(pist) said he should do (see panel 1) responding to Lu, who is definitely turned on by this handsome, mysterious hunka, whose BFF (Bernice) is lying when she says she has no interest in him, something that Lu knows; look at his face in panel 2. He’s drawn out! He shows interest in her! He’s envious of her ability to write humor, in panel 3 paying her a compliment, to which Luann is totally unable to back up. Hormone explosion! Lu can’t process her reaction fast enough to be fast and clever, which is the hilarious, and, I believe, prescient point. Brilliant!
So quick and clever? That’s not the Luann we have sadly had to contend with in her post-high school persona. Maybe her attempted reading will create some Comic Relief, though, to Piro Starr’s dark and disturbing confessional account….

What a shock! Luann failed to be quick or clever.. when it counted. =/
Luann has to be more way more relaxed, when talking to Piro. Interesting.. we now find out that Piro has been seeing a therapist.
.
So could anybody actually read what Luann said, in the last panel??

Luann is gobsmacked because it’s been so long since anyone (especially her father) has ever complimented her.

I bet Luann’s story is about Brad going from a blob of a slob kid to a responsible adult.

Luann is really not so quick and clever. Her comedic writing routine requires being deliberate and methodical.

Poor Luann, instead of growing up they have sent her back to that awkward little girl of the early strips.
