OT: Personal Update

I would like to point out that as Thorn says, the word is OPOSSUM. I’m sure Robin can tell us about possums, which are Australian creatures.

I hate to have to say this, but, from the looks of that opossum, I doubt that they are doomed.

I’m glad his exclamation mark is upside down.

A couple of years ago now, while I was cleaning the bathroom, I glanced out the window and I saw this wee little white ball of fluff kind of tottering across the yard toward the house. It was really tiny but bigger than a rat. I went outside for a better look and it was a tiny baby opossum! I think it must have been plucked off mama because there were a couple puncture wounds on it and it appeared to be trying to find…I don’t know. Someplace safe, or mama who was long gone. I got my gloves and put it in a shoebox and it just looked at me like it was so glad it could stop walking. Took it to a wonderful place near us called Howell Nature Center where they checked it over, managed to patch it up and rehab it and then released it. I called a few times to check up on it. They’re wonderful there and took good care of it. And it was just the cutest thing ever!! I love opossums anyway but what a privilege to help the little thing.

He seems nice though. Look at him.

I think we have an ally. He’s not unfriendly, just interrupted whilst reading. Me, I’d have snarled.

It has been a long time since the cessation of hostilities and the making of a peace treaty. Perhaps the opossums will be inclined to join the raccoons to stymie a common enemy.

Obadiah Opossum: Just nodded off there. I was reading Hanging Upside Down by Maris Marsupial.

Bea: Maybe you can do a presentation on possums and opossums while Bill Platypus is staying with us.

Obadiah: Sounds great. And I can get my band together, The Dogcodiles to perform.

It’s time to flip those BCN calendars and enjoy Beatrix Toe Beans (so many), Trevor, and Good Boy.

Oh dear. Well, at least the opossum looks as surprised as them. Perhaps this means they can get off on the right paw. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

A literate opossum! Now there’s something you don’t see very often in Florida.

A strategic alliance with the Opossums will be beneficial to all. Opossums eat moles, see well in the dark and are of a size that can fit into and traverse mole holes. Being omnivores they also like to root through the garbage whenever possible.

I foresee the army growing and the spoils of war being shared in a united victory.

I think Mags is about to find out that opossums are actually more bluff than bite and can be sweet a all get out.

So from the two previous encounters we have had with the Opossums (https://www.gocomics.com/breaking-cat-news/2020/03/15 and https://www.gocomics.com/breaking-cat-news/2020/06/24) they seem to be peace loving, friendly creatures, not to mention beneficial to humans AND they are immune to rabies! Have we had ANY indication as to how or why a war could have possibly occurred between the raccoons and the opossums? It just seems unlikely, based on the two encounters we have had. The raccoons must certainly have been the aggressors, it would seem to me. So maybe that’s why they are afraid of asking the Opossums for help?

I love possums, but it breaks my heart that the ones around here are so careless about looking both ways before crossing the roads.

The opossum looks rather harmless. Maybe they can work together.

The possum appears to be less fierce than the raccoons believed. The plaid and the pince nez are dead give aways.

This storyline is getting boring, I think.

She looks very nice.

Mr Possum doesn’t look very threatening at all. He’s just reading his book, comfy in his flannel shirt, and thinking upside down.

Decibel seems to be settling in quite nicely. When Jora checked on her in the bathroom this morning, she had killed a rat. Good kitty. Update was outside the bathroom door growling until Jora let her in. Update found the half eaten rat, sniffed it a time or two, then decided to leave Decibel alone.

Now Decibel has moved to the kitchen and discovered the corner cabinet. Update is interested but not pushing it, and Database is sticking to her safe place on top of the (unplugged) microwave on top of the minifridge. Peace reigns. At least for now.
