My son and daughter-in-law were living three hours away when they had their first child. They found new jobs and moved back because they needed the family support they could get here. Sometimes in-laws have value even if they are annoying at times.
My mother-in-law was a doll. Hubby’s mother-in-law, not so much, although she did adore Hubby. I always joked that if we ever broke up, I’d have to go home to HIS mother, because mine wouldn’t hear it.
I’ve always said that the secret to our successful marriage was moving 2500 miles away from friends and family to start over in a new and unfamiliar city.
I can highly recommend it to young people starting out today, but of course with phones and internet, the effect would be very different today…
I think my Wife and I loved having our in-laws close to us. Their love for us was tremendous. Their love for the grand kids and great grand kids was out of this world. My wife and I are lucky that we live so close to our kids and grand kids. Some of my friends live so far from their kids and grandkids…it is almost having to plan a trip to visit with them.
Janis just told Arlo, in her own way, that she wouldn’t want her inlaws living so close….yet when Arlo says the same thing in his own way, her feathers get ruffled. Perhaps it’s in the delivery of one’s message, or perhaps there’s a double standard here.
From my experience having in-laws near by was a big plus. They were good people and for those last minute needs they were always johnny on the spot. Maybe I was just lucky. My in laws were the best!
My ex MIL was a toxic horrible MIL, but my ex had great in-laws they treated just like a son and what does he do in return he treated all of us like crap that last 4 years. So glad him and his toxic mother are out of my life.

2 hours drive. Close enough for frequent visits. But too far for an unannounced visit.

Oopsie as we watch Arlo, remove foot from his mouth.

Here’s where the double standard steps in Arlo. Look around when you begin to open your mouth.

So they are making the decision for the kids based on their own feelings about their inlaws? Not smart or cool.

In-laws on either side are best at least 6 hours away. Close enough to get to in an easy day’s drive but too far away for drop-in visits.
