Well, they rang the buzzer, so Annie shouldn’t be lying alone for long. Sirob may prove to be more difficult to stop than they think. Since he made a later attempt on the life of Warbucks, we readers know this.
Gonna be a little hard to drive like that, holding your gun with both hands, pointed into the air. Were they expecting to see Boris in the next 45 seconds?
Plot twist: The death of Annie’s parents has nothing to do with Sirob. Driving carelessly, Harold misses a turn and the car goes into the Pacific – apparently drowning them both. In our next arc they will be found living on a deserted island on Lake Michigan, where the car floated, and will be reunited with Annie.
Abandonment on a doorstep? Yeah, he really made arrangements, eh? Looks to me like it was more spur of the moment. Som real thought given to it. These are not nice people. Crocodile tears in P1. Their reasoning is completely flawed.
Just had a thought….neither Winnie nor Harry had ANY relatives that they could’ve dropped the rugrat off to instead of at the doorstep of an orphanage?
How old would Annie be in this reimagined origin? The Illinois “Safe Haven” law was passed in 2001, but took a number of years before the “save havens” were really organized to handle infants whose mothers felt they couldn’t handle being one. Would this children’s home really be set up so soon to handle an (temporarily, it was thought) abandoned baby Annie?
If no one else, why not let Bob babysit or make sure Annie isn’t just dropped off at the orphanage without a clue for years? He was their lawyer and could have make sure a relative would have guardianship if anything happens to them.
I have long thought Team Tracy desired to pick up a new series of Annie comic strips, given her frequent appearances on this comic. Now, I’m beginning to think they have in mind a complete reboot, given the time and energy they have put into this updated backstory. I’m betting that there will be no knowledge of what happened to Harold and Winifred Gray (nice nod to Annie’s creator), giving Annie an ongoing quest to pursue in any new series. (BTW, I hope one of the characters returning in a new series is Captain Santiago, who worked out well as a kind of “big sister” to Annie before the strip shut down.)
1-WINNIE: WOWZER! This kid’s loaded diaper is making my eyes water! Let’s get outta here!
2-HAROLD: Way ahead of ya. BZZZZZZZZT!
3-HAROLD: I’m gonna wake her up with my squirt gun and get her crying! That oughta wake up the whole orphanage! WINNIE: Oh Harold – YOU CRAZY CARD YOU!!! HA HA HA!

Harold’s so stupid that’s probably his water pistol he’s carrying to the showdown with Sirob.,

What a pair of knuckleheads these two are! Nice attention to detail, Chucky. That flathead screw in panel 2 is more exciting than this lame story!

Did Winnifred and Harold get clearance from the field office before going after Boris? Why would they not have reinforcements?

I want to see an alternative comic, where they lived and did come back. And CPS gives the business over what a stupid plan this is.
“So neither of you had family or friends you could hand your daughter off to?”
“No, but…”
“Or your bosses, THE US GOVERNMENT?”
“But…”
“And you couldn’t just TELL the orphanage what was up so they’d know you planned on coming back?”
“But…”
“Get the @#%$ out of my office, you idiots.”

Panel one is tough to look at.

Miss Asthma and Miss Treat do not treat Annie well, thank goodness Mrs. Warbucks took her in, and Daddy loved her! (If I have things correctly)!

Classic prank! Ring the doorbell and then run. And they return later to TP the trees. However, badly shamed, they never return for Annie.

I pity the person who looka out, sees the baby AND the gun, and understands there’s no QUESTION about them taking her in.

And they go to confront Boris, unknowing that they are brandishing Winifred’s water pistols instead

I’m puzzled why anybody would want to tribute HROLD gRAY, WHO WAS A DISAGREEABLE OLD GRUMP IN REAL LIFE.
He was supposed to have said—“Sweetness and light, who needs it? Murder, arson, and rape—-that’s what the world is made of”
