This is one of those times I’d throw Garfield out the door!

Stretches the credibility that the doughnut was undamaged. But the only way I can imagine to fix it would have been to move the plate away from the edge and hit the hand before it gets to the plate.

One have to admire Garfield perfect control of his strike! To smash Jon’s hand like this, without even messing the donut icing, can only come from a Master of the ancient art of Glutton-do (and a long life of practice).

So Lyman is not in the basement.

I’m hearing the Jaws theme for some reason.

Jon’s eyeballs in the second last frame are also a subtle delight before the final reaction.

Knowing Garfield he probably did that entirely on purpose

I like Garfields way of thinking

Garfield will go to any lengths to take any food from Jon, no matter how underhanded the tactic.

Wait, people still read print newspapers at the kitchen table? For that matter, who goes through the trouble of placing a donut on a plate instead of plucking it out of the box or bag? When the most realistic thing in the strip is Garfield making a play for the donut…

We know there were no injuries, cuz the hammer went “whango.” Now, if it had gone “splat”, we would know there were broken bones.

So why didn’t Garfield just take the donut?

Actually, it’s the blow with the mallet he doesn’t want, not the donut.

Drawing this strip must have been hard. Just look a all of those newspaper lines and the way his hand is jiggling. I can’t even draw a straight line or decent stick people.

I wonder if Garfield wielded the Mallet of Forethought? More mighty than Thor’s legendary Mjölnir!

This looks like something Don Martin would come up with.

OK. So we know who Lyman and Orson are, but who is the football player?

• Thanks to comments I reexamined to see Lyman and Orson.

• Garfield was terriblely evil in this. Bad Garfield.

• Critical remark: I would replace one of the panels of Garfield waiting with a final panel showing Garfield reaching or eating the donut himself. I know it is implied but rather see it than assume it.
